PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in the ciliary body and anterior choroid that occur after retinal detachment surgery.
METHODS: Thirty-three eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were evaluated before and after surgery. An ultrasound biomicroscope was used to observe the ciliary body and anterior choroid.
RESULTS: Ciliary detachment was found to be present in 22 eyes (67%) on examination 5-14 days after surgery. The detachment was confined to the pars plana in nine eyes and involved the pars plicata and plana in 13 eyes. The whole circumference of the ciliary body was detached in seven

PURPOSE: To develop a vitreous sampling method that increases yield while reducing risk of harm to the patient.
METHODS: Potential negative effects of fluoresceinated BSS infusion solution on biologic activity were assessed by monitoring changes in fibroblast contraction of collagen gels in response to serum or vitreous. Paired vitreous samples were collected from ten patients before and during infusion of fluoresceinated BSS solution. The extent to which the vitreous was diluted was calculated by comparing the levels of fluorescence in the samples with that in fluoresceinated BSS. Protein co

BACKGROUND: Silicone keratopathy frequently develops as a complication of silicone oil tamponade in the management of severe trauma in eyes with partial or complete aniridia. We therefore designed an "open" artificial iris diaphragm to prevent silicone oil-endothelial contact. In hypotony, where insufficient circulation of aqueous allows silicone in the anterior chamber despite an open diaphragm, a new solution became necessary. The "closed" artificial diaphragm was developed.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, two consecutive series of artificial iris diaphragms were compared. Forty-four

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of peripheral transscleral retinal diode photocoagulation with or without transscleral cyclodiode therapy in patients with rubeosis iridis with or without elevated intraocular pressure and no fundal view.
METHODS: Peripheral transscleral retinal diode photocoagulation was performed in 15 eyes of 13 patients in an attempt to promote regression of rubeosis. The fundus could not be seen in any of the 15 eyes, so conventional panretinal photocoagulation was not possible. Nine eyes had associated elevated intraocular pressure and were treated with concurrent transs

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between axial length, as a measurement of hyperopia, and branch retinal vein occlusion and to determine the clinical characteristics and other risk factors of patients with branch retinal vein occlusion.
METHODS: A case-control study was performed using 36 patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and 36 age- and sex-matched control patients selected from a list of subjects who had undergone cataract extraction.
RESULTS: There was essentially no difference in axial length between patients the disorder and control patients (23.55 mm versus 23.62 mm; P

BACKGROUND: Although retinal breaks occur frequently during vitrectomy, the postoperative occurrence of new retinal holes close to the vascular arcade after vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment rarely has been reported.
METHODS: Three patients with rhegmatogenous, retinal detachment were treated by vitrectomy. More than 49 days after vitrectomy, posterior retinal holes with no retinal detachment occurred halfway between the vascular arcade and the chorioretinal scar around the extrusion hole or the primary retinal tear.
RESULTS: These new holes were effectively managed with photo

OBJECTIVE: To characterize clinical features of patients with Oguchi disease associated with a homozygous deletion of adenine at nucleotide 1147 (1147delA) in codon 309 in the arrestin gene.
METHODS: Mutation screening by single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis was done, followed by sequencing. Ophthalmologic testing included evaluation of visual acuity and color vision, fundus examination, electroretinography, fluorescein angiography, evaluation of kinetic visual field, and dark adaptometry. Nine patients with Oguchi disease from seven unrelated families and family members who were

PURPOSE: To evaluate the significance of refractive error in cases of branch retinal vein occlusion.
METHODS: Of 354 patients with branch retinal vein occlusion who attended our clinic between 1989 and 1995, 75 patients with unilateral branch retinal vein occlusion were compared with an equal number of matched controls with similar inclusion and exclusion criteria. The spherical equivalents of the refractive errors of patients in both groups were compared using the chi-square test, student's t test, and multivariate logistic regression.
RESULTS: Hypermetropia was present in 53 patients with

PURPOSE: To determine if vitreoretinal surgery is successful in closing traumatic macular holes and subsequently improving visual acuity. Blunt trauma may result in a macular hole when it causes traumatic separation of the vitreous from the retina, contusion necrosis, or subfoveal hemorrhage. Like idiopathic macular holes, traumatic macular holes are surrounded by a ring of subretinal fluid and result in severely diminished visual acuity.
METHODS: Fourteen eyes with full-thickness posttraumatic macular holes were treated. The patients ages ranged from 15 years to 36 years (mean, 22 years). Pr

PURPOSE: This report describes results of a prospective pilot trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of hyperthermia as an adjunct to enucleation or brachytherapy in the treatment of patients with intraocular malignant melanoma.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with intraocular malignant melanomas were treated with ultrasonically induced hyperthermia. In 14 patients, hyperthermia was administered before enucleation (median follow-up period, 44 months), and in 11 patients, hyperthermia was used as an adjunct to brachytherapy (median follow-up period, 79 months).
RESULTS: Patient survival in e

PURPOSE: To assist clinicians in the diagnosis and management of ocular siderosis.
METHODS: The diagnosis and management of three cases of ocular siderosis secondary to a retained iron-containing intraocular foreign body are described.
RESULTS: Noteworthy features included: 1) the characteristic features of a tonic or Adies pupil (one case) and 2) the failure of high-resolution computed tomography scanning and plain film radiography to detect the intraocular foreign body (two of three cases). In contrast, ultrasonography demonstrated the intraocular foreign bodies in all cases and accurately

PURPOSE: To describe and classify ophthalmic, ultrasonographic findings in patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma with ocular involvement.
METHODS: B- and A-scan ultrasonography was performed on the eyes of 13 patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma with ocular involvement.
RESULTS: In seven patients, the eyes were the site of initial involvement. In the other six patients, both ocular and central nervous system disease were present at the initial evaluation. All patients had abnormal ultrasonographic findings. The most common were vitreous debris (n = 10), choro

PURPOSE: The ultrastructural nature of the preequatorial vitreoretinal interface was studied to elucidate the predisposing role for peripheral retinal tear formation.
METHODS: Fourteen enucleated globes from seven decreased patients were examined. The patients ranged in age from 16-88 years, with an average age of 40 years. None of the patients had a history of ocular or systemic disease that could have affected the eyes. Globes were examined by stereomicroscopy and by light and electron microscopy using the celloidin embedding method.
RESULTS: On examination we found several structures in a

Fine-needle aspiration cytology is a valuable technique in the work-up of nodules and masses arising within the head and neck. Squamous cell carcinoma is present most often, and because of this relative frequency, the primary utility of needle-aspiration cytology is in the confirmation or exclusion of this diagnosis. FNA is particularly helpful in the work-up of cervical masses and nodules because biopsy of cervical adenopathy should be avoided unless all other diagnostic modalities have failed to establish a diagnosis. As such, needle-aspiration cytology represents an accurate, inexpensive, a
