Ergonomic risk assessment of smartphone users using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) tool.

The number of smartphone users globally is rapidly increasing. This study aimed to assess the level of ergonomic risk to smartphone users, and to evaluate the correlation between any self-reported musculoskeletal disorders and the level of ergonomic risk. Thirty participants completed a questionnaire, tailored specifically for smartphone users, to determine any musculoskeletal disorders. Participants were given a seated smartphone texting task and their postures were video recorded during the task. The video scenarios were evaluated by three independent researchers to determine the level of er…

Muscarinic receptors in the cerebellar vermis modulate the gain of the vestibulospinal reflexes in decerebrate cats.

1. The Purkinje (P)-cells of the cerebellar vermis, which exert a prominent influence on posture as well as on the gain of vestibulospinal (VS) reflexes, are under the control not only of the classic mossy fibers and climbing fibers which liberate excitatory amino acids as neurotransmitter, but also of cholinergic afferents. The role of these afferents was investigated in precollicular decerebrate cats by using the method of local microinjection of cholinergic agents into appropriate areas of the cerebellar cortex. 2. Unilateral injection into the vermal cortex of the culmen of the non-selecti…

Paroxysmal dystonia with thalamic lesion in multiple sclerosis.

Paroxysmal dystonia (PD) is a usually painful, unilateral dystonic posture, precipitated by voluntary movement, tactile stimulation, startling noise or hyperventilation. We describe two cases of paroxysmal dystonia in multiple sclerosis, both with a critically localized lesion in the thalamus, contralateral to the paroxysmal symptoms. Only one other case of paroxysmal dystonia with a demyelinated lesion of the thalamus has been reported previously.

Spinal factors in the generation of fibromyalgia syndrome.

In fibromyalgia as well as in low back pain we frequently find disturbances of the posture of vertebral column clinically and radiologically. Also, reduction in the mobility of whole spine and localized movement impairments in both conditions was present. It is likely that the disturbances are responsible for the first manifestations of fibromyalgia in a single localization, especially in lumbar and cervical regions.

Class I malocclusion with severe open bite skeletal pattern treatment.

A case report of a Class I malocclusion with a severe skeletal open bite, excessive overjet, a high mandibular plane angle, and a forward maxillary rotation is presented. Treatment has eliminated the causative factors (i.e., mouth breathing, enamel hypoplasia of the first molars, and abnormal tongue posture and function). A normal growth pattern has been restored, ensuring a good and stable orthodontic result.

[The treatment of Duane syndrome by a inversion of the right lateral muscle].

The authors describe a new technique to deal with Duane's retraction syndrome. The vertical recti are rotated around their longitudinal axis with saving of the temporal ciliary arteries in order to prevent anterior segment ischemia. The results of 52 patients operated upon are discussed. The technique proved to be successful in the treatment of head posture, esotropia and limitation of abduction.

The efficacy of early rehabilitation in enhancing vestibular compensation in mice with unilateral vestibular neurectomy by promoting cellular proliferation and glial reaction.

Acute peripheral vestibular dysfunction is associated with a variety of postural and balance disturbances. Vestibular rehabilitation training (VRT) is widely acknowledged as an effective intervention for promoting vestibular compensation. Nevertheless, the broader implementation of early VRT is hindered by an incomplete understanding of its neurobiological mechanisms. Building upon prior research, the present study investigates the effects of early VRT on postural behavior and the cellular mechanisms within the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) following unilateral vestibular neurectomy (UVN) in

A Multistage Hemiplegic Lower-Limb Rehabilitation Robot: Design and Gait Trajectory Planning.

Most lower limb rehabilitation robots are limited to specific training postures to adapt to stroke patients in multiple stages of recovery. In addition, there is a lack of attention to the switching functions of the training side, including left, right, and bilateral, which enables patients with hemiplegia to rehabilitate with a single device. This article presents an exoskeleton robot named the multistage hemiplegic lower-limb rehabilitation robot, which has been designed to do rehabilitation in multiple training postures and training sides. The mechanism consisting of the thigh, calf, and fo…

Motion sickness susceptibility and visually induced motion sickness as diagnostic signs in Parkinson's disease.

Postural instability and loss of vestibular and somatosensory acuity can be part of the signs encountered in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Visual dependency is described in PD. These modifications of sensory input hierarchy are predictors of motion sickness (MS). The aim of this study was to assess MS susceptibility and effects of real induced MS in posture. 63 PD patients, whose medication levels (levodopa) reflected the pathology were evaluated, and 27 healthy controls, filled a MS questionnaire; 9 PD patients and 43 healthy controls were assessed by posturography using virtual reality. Drug amo…

Bridging the gap between temporomandibular disorders, static balance impairment and cervicogenic dizziness: Posturographic and clinical outcomes.

Several studies have investigated the possible influence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) on body posture and whether cervical spine disorders, such as cervicogenic dizziness (CGD) could play an additional role in affecting static balance. The purpose of this study was to analyze static postural behavior by means of static posturography, in patients affected by either TMD or CGD alone or by both conditions, and to compare findings with a group of healthy subjects. Significant changes in posturographic parameters were found among the three groups of patients and when compared with controls.…

Is it important to know the load mass in lifting tasks to prevent falls?

BACKGROUND: Lifting objects without knowing its weight may result in postural imbalances and be a risk factor for falls. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the load knowledge in postural balance when lifting different weight loads. METHODS: Thirteen male subjects (23.8 ± 3.1 years; 73.5 ± 7.8 kg; 179.1 ± 7.5 cm; foot length, 25.7 ± 1.2 cm) participated in the study. The effect of the weight overestimation on the postural stability was measured by the Index of Proximity to Stability Boundary (IPSB) and through the anterior-posterior and medio-lateral lengths disp

First trial response to sudden support surface displacement: the effect of vestibular compensation.

CONCLUSION: The effect of visual condition is more intense in the first trial response in normal subjects and patients and in last trial response only in patients. The first trial effect is more evident in compensated patients in the eyes open condition with any type of perturbation, and in non-compensated patients with the angular displacements in either visual condition. OBJECTIVE: The study of body reaction to FTR can help to understand the complex mechanisms involved in the postural response and to develop new therapies to improve stability and prevent falls in unilateral vestibular defic

[Correlation between cognitive and motor functions in Parkinson's disease].

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have a number of cognitive impairments even in the early phase of the disease. Anti-dementia drugs such as cholinesterase inhibitors and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists are suggested to alleviate such impairments. This supports the simultaneous treatment of both cognitive and motor dysfunctions. Thus, the correlation between these two functions is attracting an increasing clinical interest. Previous studies show a correlation between executive/frontal dysfunction and motor symptoms. This correlation is suggested to be mediated by a dysfun

Placement of forearm surface EMG electrodes in the assessment of hand loading in manual tasks.

UNLABELLED: Surface electromyography (EMG) is commonly used to study the loading of the forearm. Pro-supination movements cause surface electrodes to move in relation to the underlying muscles. We studied the effects of different electrode locations and forearm postures on the association between the EMG signals and external hand load in a laboratory experiment. Eleven subjects performed simulated work tasks with the forearm in neutral, pronated or supinated postures and with systematic variation of external load. The tasks included isometric gripping, pushing and pulling, and lifting and lowe…

The effect of three alternative keyboard designs on forearm pronation, wrist extension, and ulnar deviation: a meta-analysis.

The growth of computer keyboard use in the workplace is believed to be one important determinant of the increased prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity (MSD-UE). One possible contributing factor to the development of MSD-UE is the flat standard keyboard, which places the forearm and wrist in biomechanically awkward postures. This meta-analysis examines the efficacy of three alternative keyboard designs, adjustable slope (AS), split fixed-angle (FA), and adjustable open-tented (AT), in reducing forearm pronation, wrist extension, and ulnar deviation. Analys…

Orthostatic tremor: an essential tremor variant?

Three patients with a clear-cut history of essential tremor of the upper limbs presented with the clinical features reported by Heilman as orthostatic tremor. Electromyographic findings included 6-8 Hz postural tremor in all four limbs. Highly synchronized 16 Hz rhythmic discharges were found in the legs upon standing. This peculiar pattern of discharge was also observed in the upper limbs and spinal muscles. High frequency rhythmic bursts, either alternating or co-contracting were present in specific postures not necessarily related to standing. An additional group of 12 patients with postura…

The role of plastic surgery in the management of airway obstruction.

A patient with the rare genetic disease of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation is presented. The phenotypic presentation included localized, idiosyncratic lipodystrophy that caused life-threatening respiratory obstruction. Plastic surgical excision and suction-assisted lipoplasty of huge deposits of fat and skin led to marked improvement in patient posture and ventilation. This rare disorder, stages of treatment, and salient references are discussed.
