Impact of Working Experience on Image Perception and Image Evaluation Approaches in Stroke Imaging: Results of an Eye-Tracking Study.

PURPOSE: Higher rates of missed pathologies, caused by a lack of professional experience or systematic search, suggest that a methodical approach to radiological analysis can be learned. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the efficiency of different principles of screening stroke CTs for cerebrovascular diseases between radiologists and neuroradiologists with different levels of experience in relation to professional experience. METHODS: A set of anonymous CT images of 20 patients, with a suspected stroke, was individually presented to 12 radiologists with different levels of profe

The International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health Process of Care for the Identification of Sexual Concerns and Problems in Women.

Sexual problems are common in women of all ages. Despite their frequency and impact, female sexual dysfunctions (FSDs) are often unrecognized and untreated in clinical settings. In response, the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health convened a multidisciplinary, international expert panel to develop a process of care (POC) that outlines recommendations for identification of sexual problems in women. This POC describes core and advanced competencies in FSD for clinicians who are not sexual medicine specialists and serve as caregivers of women and, therefore, is useful for

Headache: Tension-Type Headache.

Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common primary headache disorder, with a worldwide lifetime prevalence of 46% to 78%. TTH causes greater disability and accounts for more missed work days than migraine. The etiology of TTH is thought to be multifactorial, involving genetic and environmental factors. The three subtypes of TTH are infrequent episodic, frequent episodic, and chronic. Patients typically describe headache pain as pressing, dull, and with the sensation of a tight band around the head. Nonprescription analgesics are indicated for management of episodic TTH. Prophylaxis should

Screaming Body and Silent Healthcare Providers: A Case Study with a Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivor.

Stressful early life experiences cause immune dysregulation across the lifespan. Despite the fact that studies have identified childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors as a particularly vulnerable group, only a few attempts have been made to study their lived-experience of the physical health consequences of CSA. The aim of this study was to explore a female CSA survivor's lived-experience of the physical health consequences of CSA and how she experienced the reactions of healthcare providers. Seven interviews were conducted with this 40-year-old woman, Anne, using a phenomenological research ap

Attention training to pleasant stimuli in anxiety.

Attentional bias for threatening stimuli in anxiety is a common finding in the literature. The present study addressed whether attention training toward pleasant stimuli can reduce anxiety symptoms and induce a processing bias in favor of pleasant information in nonpatients who were selected to score similarly to individuals with generalized anxiety or panic disorder on a measure of worry or physiological arousal, respectively. Participants were randomly assigned to attention training to pleasant (ATP) stimuli or to a placebo control (PC) condition. All participants completed baseline and post

HIV stigma trends in the general population during antiretroviral treatment expansion: analysis of 31 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, 2003-2013.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma is associated with increased risk-taking behavior, reduced uptake of HIV testing, and decreased adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Although ART scale-up may reduce HIV-related stigma, the extent to which levels of stigma in the general population have changed during the era of ART scale-up in sub-Saharan Africa is unknown. METHODS: Social distance and anticipated stigma were operationalized using standard HIV-related stigma questions contained in the Demographic and Health Surveys and AIDS Indicator Surveys of 31 African countries between 2003 and 2013.

How do women at risk of HIV/AIDS in Iran perceive gender norms and gendered power relations in the context of safe sex negotiations?

Sexual transmission of HIV/AIDS among women is growing in the Middle East region. Despite the fact that there are numerous gender-related sociocultural factors influencing HIV/AIDS protective behaviors, little gender-specificity is carried out in HIV prevention in Iran. In order to close this gap, we aimed to provide preliminary work that explored the perceptions that women at risk of HIV had about gender norms and gendered power and their ability to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS. Twenty-five semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with women at risk of HIV/AIDS, aged 21-49 ye

Acupuncture for hot flashes: decision making by breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Hot flashes (HFs) are a particularly common and distressing symptom among breast cancer survivors (BCSs). Given its low rate of side effects, acupuncture shows promise as a therapeutic approach for HFs, but little is known about BCS's decision making about the use of acupuncture. This study seeks to identify attitudes and beliefs about using acupuncture for HFs by BCSs. METHODS: Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a conceptual framework, we conducted semistructured interviews among women with stage I-III breast cancer who had finished primary treatment and were currently ex

Impedance control is selectively tuned to multiple directions of movement.

Humans are able to learn tool-handling tasks, such as carving, demonstrating their competency to make movements in unstable environments with varied directions. When faced with a single direction of instability, humans learn to selectively co-contract their arm muscles tuning the mechanical stiffness of the limb end point to stabilize movements. This study examines, for the first time, subjects simultaneously adapting to two distinct directions of instability, a situation that may typically occur when using tools. Subjects learned to perform reaching movements in two directions, each of which

Translation to practice: a randomised, controlled study of an evidence-based booklet for breast-care nurses in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), it was documented that a problem of knowledge transfer existed within the speciality of breast-cancer care, thus depriving patients of receiving optimal care. Despite increasingly robust research evidence indicating recommendation of whole body exercise for people affected by breast cancer, commensurate changes to practice were not noted amongst breast-care nurses (BCNs). AIM: To evaluate the effect of a targeted booklet, Exercise and Breast Cancer: A Booklet for Breast-Care Nurses, on changes in knowledge, reported practice, and attitudes of BCNs in th

A nurse-developed prechemotherapy education checklist.

Many patients diagnosed with cancer receive chemotherapy. Oncology nurses are responsible for educating patients prior to the chemotherapy experience. Studies have examined what topics should be covered for such patients and how education should be delivered, but little literature exists regarding how to help nurses organize the data and perform education. This article examines how a community oncology practice developed a checklist to assist oncology nurses in organizing and delivering chemotherapy education to patients. Principles of adult education are reviewed briefly. The principles can a

[Retrospective study of clozapine use in Ile-de-France].

INTRODUCTION: Clozapine, synthesized in the sixties, is an atypical antipsychotic drug whose history has been marked by its haematological toxicity. The purpose of this study was, ten years after it had been replaced at French psychiatrists' disposal, to gather data on the prescription modalities of clozapine, assess whether some factors could affect its efficacy, and describe the population of schizophrenic patients concerned. METHODOLOGY: Psychiatrists in the Paris region were asked to answer a questionnaire about their patients treated with clozapine. The information collected was about so

A survey of music therapy methods and their role in the treatment of early elementary school children with ADHD.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has recently been receiving more frequent attention in professional circles and in the press, and some sources would assert that its occurrence in the general population is consistently growing. Because music therapists often work with preschool and school-age children, it is likely that they will increasingly be treating children with a diagnosis of ADHD. However, there is little in the music therapy literature about music therapy treatment for ADHD. The purpose of this survey was to ascertain what music therapy methods are being used for childr
