Longitudinal, multidisciplinary, resident-driven intervention to increase immunisation rates for Medicaid, low-income and uninsured patients.

INTRODUCTION: More payers are closely linking reimbursement to high-value care outcomes such as immunisation rates. Despite this, there remain high rates of pneumonia and influenza-related hospitalisations generating hospital expenditures as high as $11 000 per hospitalisation. Vaccinating the public is an integral part of preventing poor health and utilisation outcomes and is particularly relevant to high-risk patients. As part of a multidisciplinary effort between family and internal medicine residency programmes, our goal was to improve vaccination rates to an average of 76% of eligible Med

A Clinician's Guide to Healthy Eating for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention.

Despite continued advances in health care, the cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality rate has plateaued in recent years and appears to be trending upward. Poor diet is a leading cause of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, which are leading contributors to CVD morbidity and mortality. Although dietary modification is a cornerstone of CVD prevention, implementation in clinical practice is limited by inadequate formal training in nutrition science. In this report, we review the individual components of a heart-healthy diet, evidence-based dietary recommendations, and the impact of diet on CVD

Assessment of public health risk associated with viral contamination in harvested urban stormwater for domestic applications.

Capturing stormwater is becoming a new standard for sustainable urban stormwater management, which can be used to supplement water supply portfolios in water-stressed cities. The key advantage of harvesting stormwater is to use low impact development (LID) systems for treatment to meet water quality requirement for non-potable uses. However, the lack of scientific studies to validate the safety of such practice has limited its adoption. Microbial hazards in stormwater, especially human viruses, represent the primary public health threat. Using adenovirus and norovirus as target pathogens, we i

Application of a socio-ecological model to mother-infant bed-sharing.

Mother-infant bed-sharing has been associated with an increased risk of sleep-related infant deaths, and thus, health messaging has aimed to discourage this behavior. Despite this messaging, bed-sharing remains a common practice in the United States, especially among minority families. Moreover, rates of accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (often related to bed-sharing) are on the rise, with Black infants at two to three times greater risk than Whites. Multiple studies have identified risk factors for bed-sharing, but a gap remains between findings and translation into intervention

"Falling between the cracks": Investigating the competing challenges experienced by professionals working with people who hoard.

Hoarding disorder is characterised by both the distress associated with discarding and the resulting accumulation of possessions that clutter the home environment, and represents a substantial public health and social problem, requiring an effective multi-agency response. Although a recognised psychiatric condition since 2013, hoarding disorder is under-recognised within mental health treatment provision, and evidence-based treatment pathways are lacking. This study aimed to explore multi-agency working in practice and similarities and differences in how hoarding support is perceived across a

Improving data on homelessness and health: partnering with community-based organizations.

BACKGROUND: Community-based organizations (CBOs) provide critical services to people experiencing homelessness and played a unique role in data collection throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Although data from CBOs filled a critical need, many jurisdictions faced challenges with timely and integrated data collection. We gathered expert opinions from CBO leaders on homelessness and health to identify how to support CBO data collection to best inform public health practices. METHODS: We conducted purposively sampled semi-structured key informant interviews (KII) with CBO leaders. Questions includ…

Offering e-cigarettes for smoking cessation and reduction in people with mental illness (ESCAPE): Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite a steady decline in smoking rates across the United Kingdom (UK) over the past decades, substantial tobacco-related inequalities persist, particularly among individuals with mental illness. Smoking prevalence in this group has remained largely unchanged, highlighting a major public health concern. This protocol outlines a trial aimed at addressing this issue by evaluating the effectiveness of offering an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) starter kit for smoking cessation and harm reduction as an adjunct to usual care to adults who smoke with mental illness treated

Statistical design of THRio: a phased implementation clinic-randomized study of a tuberculosis preventive therapy intervention.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Rio de Janeiro, where a high proportion of HIV-infected adults are co-infected with latent TB. Health officials in Brazil have recommended that HIV patients be tested for TB infection and given TB prophylaxis (isoniazid) if positive. In practice, although Brazil is a model for provision of antiretroviral therapy to patients with advanced HIV disease, relatively few such patients receive TB testing and prevention services. PURPOSE: We initiated a randomized study of a health services intervention to train health personnel in imp

Navigating Concurrent Diagnoses With Cancer and Mental Health Disorder: Patients' Perspectives on Personalised Treatment and Care.

BACKGROUND: People living with concurrent cancer and mental health disorders face heightened vulnerability within healthcare systems that are predominantly organised around biomedical treatment pathways. Although cancer care has advanced substantially, less is known about how these patients experience recognition of their psychological vulnerability, continuity of care, communication and opportunities to participate meaningfully in decisions about treatment. AIM: To explore patients' experiences of living with concurrent cancer and mental health disorders, with particular focus on how they ex

Deployment of a machine learning-based predictive system for childhood diarrhea in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Diarrhea remains a leading cause of child mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa, necessitating advanced predictive tools for early intervention. Despite the growing adoption of machine learning in healthcare, gaps persist in deploying models as scalable, real-world solutions. This study developed an end-to-end machine learning framework to predict diarrhea among children under five in SSA, integrating rigorous model development with Flask-based deployment for practical use. Using nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data from 27 SSA countries (2016-2024), we preprocessed da
