The effect of CAM [cyclic AMP, Mg-ATP, and 3-isobutyl, 1-methylxanthine (MIX)] on triacylglycerol (TG) lipase activity in extracts from heparin-perfused rat heart was determined. TG lipase activity in homogenate, 10,000g supernatant, 105,000g supernatant, ammonium sulfate supernatant, and the eluate from heparin-Sepharose was increased between 62 and 151% when incubated with a combination of 0.3 mM cyclic AMP, 5 mM MgCl2, and 2 mM ATP. We have developed a liquid chromatographic method which uses electrochemical detection for the simultaneous quantitation of histamine and N tau-methylhistamine in rat brain. Leukotrienes (LT's) are produced in a number of hypersensitivity and in inflammatory conditions in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract and may contribute to the pathogenesis of GI mucosal injury in their states. LT's do not appear to be produced by the GI mucosa in appreciable quantities under basal "physiological" conditions. Another important leucocyte derived mediator, platelet activating factor (PAF), which is produced in large quantities in hypersensitivity and inflammatory conditions, when given i.v. induces hyperaemia, vascular status and accompanying lesions of the gastric mucosa in rats.

The effect of naloxone on a number of experimental shock models, using the anaesthetized rat, was studied with special emphasis on mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and chance of survival. Only a slight increase in MABP was noted in haemorrhagic shock models whereas survival was not affected. Naloxone was without effect in endotoxin shock (i.p. administration of endotoxin). The relationship between wet-dog shaking (WDS) and after-discharge (AD), and the effects of neuroleptics on WDS and AD elicited by hippocampal stimulation, were investigated. The effects of neonatally administered chlorpromazine and reserpine on the response of rat hepatic drug-metabolising enzymes to testosterone in adult life have been investigated using the chlorinated cyclodiene substrate DME. The in vivo cross-linking of cytokeratins to DNA in intact Novikoff ascites hepatoma cells exposed to the chromium salt K2CrO4 and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cis-DDP) was studied. The behavioral performance of rats subjected in the neonatal period to hypoxia-ischemia at either 37 degrees C or 21 degrees C was compared to that of sham-ligated animals. Chronic renal failure was induced in Wistar rats by administration of a LiCl-containing (40 mmol/kg) diet from birth until an age of 55-65 weeks.
