Food sensing controls C. elegans reproductive behavior by neuromodulatory disinhibition.

Like many organisms, the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans incorporates an assessment of environmental quality into its reproductive strategy. C. elegans hermaphrodites release fertilized eggs into food-rich environments but retain them in the absence of food. Here, we report the discovery of a neural circuit required for the modulation of reproductive behavior by food sensing. A mutation that electrically silences the AVK interneurons uncouples egg laying from detection of environmental food cues. We find that AVK activity inhibits egg laying, and AVKs themselves are inhibited by dopamine rele

Climate Change and Reproductive Health: Adopting a Comprehensive Approach to Reduce the Impact.

In the current century, climate change has been regarded as one of the most serious public health threats, which has drastic health, environmental, and social aftereffects. The purpose of the current article is to identify the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on reproductive health and to propose specific public health recommendations to reduce these identified impacts. Climate change has been linked with multiple reproductive concerns, such as pregnancy complications, sexually transmitted infections, and infertility, which can cumulatively pose to be a major concern. Climate chan

Role of hyaluronan in endometrial receptivity: key insights for implantation and reproductive success.

Infertility affects millions worldwide, and implantation failure remains a critical barrier in assisted reproduction. Endometrial receptivity, a fundamental prerequisite for successful implantation, involves precise regulation of extracellular matrix components, with hyaluronan (HA) being particularly significant due to its structural and signaling roles. This study evaluated the expression of genes involved in HA metabolism and regulation across different phases of the menstrual cycle, particularly emphasizing their role during the window of implantation in normal fertility and repeated in vi…

Exposure to ambient ozone and ovarian reserve in Chinese women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ambient ozone may be associated with a decline in ovarian reserve; however, epidemiological evidence remains limited. We aimed to estimate the association between ambient ozone exposure and ovarian reserve, and to identify critical exposure windows. METHODS: We included 2815 women aged 20-45 years who attended an infertility clinic in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, between 2014 and 2022. We calculated average concentrations of ozone exposure according to the development of follicles (2-month, 4-month, 6- month) and 1-year period prior to measurement, using a satelli

Genomic evidence for males of exceptional reproductive output (ERO) in apes and humans.

It is widely suspected that a small percentage of males have exceptional reproductive output (ERO) but progeny numbers of males are rarely measurable, even in humans. If we define the variance ratio of reproductive-output in males and females as α' = VM /VF , the ERO hypothesis would predict α' ≫ 1. Since autosomal, X, and, Y chromosomes are found in males 1/2, 1/3, and 100% of the time, their DNA diversities can inform about α'. For example, autosomal and Y-linked diversities are governed, respectively, by (VM  + VF )/2 and VM . When comparing the chromosomal diversities, α' appears to be nea

From Gut to Reproductive Health: Exploring Microbiome Interactions and Future Interventions.

Recent advances in microbiome research have illuminated the complex bidirectional interactions between gut health and reproductive well-being. Understanding the gut microbiome's influence on the reproductive system and vice versa reveals how both of them can affect hormone production, immune function, and ultimately overall reproductive health. Dysbiosis, an imbalance in the gut microbial community, has been linked with a range of reproductive issues, including decreased sperm count and motility, erectile dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, infertility, and adverse pr

The vaginal microbiome in bacterial vaginosis: Pathogenesis, reproductive impacts, and emerging therapies.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV), the leading gynecological condition affecting women of reproductive age globally, is marked by a reduction in the dominant protective bacterial species Lactobacillus within the vaginal microbiome (VMB). This condition is triggered by an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria and leads to many gynecological and reproductive repercussions, such as increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections and infertility. Moreover, BV's effects extend to pregnancy, contributing to adverse obstetric outcomes such as miscarriages, preterm delivery, and postpartum complications

Partner Ethnicity and Assisted Reproductive Technology Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Despite significant advances in assisted reproductive technology (ART), disparities in clinical outcomes persist. While patient-related factors are well-studied, the role of partner ethnicity remains understudied. We hypothesized that partner ethnicity affects ART outcomes. This study examined the association between partner ethnicity and ART outcomes. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among patients and their partners undergoing IVF treatment in the United Kingdom between 2017 and 2018. The exposure was partner ethnicity. Outcomes included biochemical pregnancy, c

Sperm metabolomic signatures of asthenozoospermia and teratozoospermia in Chinese reproductive-age men.

Asthenozoospermia and teratozoospermia are common causes of male infertility. Despite their prevalence, the underlying metabolic mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted targeted metabolomic profiling of sperm samples from 131 Chinese reproductive-age men (48 normozoospermic controls, 40 asthenozoospermic patients, and 43 teratozoospermic patients) to identify distinct metabolic signatures associated with these conditions. We identified 47 significantly altered metabolites in asthenozoospermia compared to normozoospermia (18 downregulated and 29 upregulated). In teratoz

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus: Challenges and Advances in Vaccine Development.

Persistent infection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) significantly hampers both the quantity and quality of pork production in China. Although PRRSV is widely prevalent worldwide, the absence of effective vaccines has made it one of the major pathogens threatening the sustainable development of the global swine industry. Vaccination remains one of the most effective measures for controlling pathogen infections. However, the continuous genetic recombination and mutation of PRRSV demand more comprehensive strategies to address emerging threats, while ensuring the e

Female reproductive tract obstruction and its imaging mimics - A pictorial review.

Obstruction of the female reproductive tract can occur in multiple locations. This can result in hydrocolpos at the level of the vagina, hydrometra at the level of the uterus, and hydrosalpinx at the level of the uterine tubes, each with their own underlying causes. Identification of relevant anatomy helps localize the obstruction, which facilitates diagnosis and appropriate clinical management. Cross-sectional techniques, especially MRI can be useful for anatomic localization in difficult cases. Here, we review the various causes of female reproductive tract obstruction, their pathophysiology

Intrauterine growth restriction disrupts folliculogenesis in gilts: Insights into reproductive health.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is defined as a condition in which the fetus does not reach its full growth potential with serious consequences later in life. This study evaluated, by means of histomorphometrical analysis, the follicular development in normal weight (NW) and IUGR gilts along postnatal development. Fifty pairs of littermate gilts were selected at birth and allocated into two experimental groups according to birthweight: IUGR (0.8-1.0 kg) and NW (1.4-1.7 kg). Euthanasia was performed at three stages: birth, 100 days, and 150 days of age, when body and organ weights were m
