Non-contact screening system with two microwave radars in the diagnosis of sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

There are two key problems in applying Doppler radar to a diagnosis system for sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. The first is noise associated with body movement and the second is the body position in bed and the change of the sleeping posture. We propose a new automatic gain control and a real-time radar-output channel selection method which is based on a spectrum shape analysis. There are three types of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea and mixed sleep apnea. In this paper we paid attention to the obstructive sleep apnea and attempted to detect the disorder of corrugated…

Temporal and sleep stage-dependent agreement in manual scoring of respiratory events.

Obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis is based on the manual scoring of respiratory events. The agreement in the manual scoring of the respiratory events lacks an in-depth investigation as most of the previous studies reported only the apnea-hypopnea index or overall agreement, and not temporal, second-by-second or event subtype agreement. We hypothesized the temporal and subtype agreement to be low because the event duration or subtypes are not generally considered in current clinical practice. The data comprised 50 polysomnography recordings scored by 10 experts. The respiratory event agreement

Clinically important age-related differences in sleep related disordered breathing in infants and children with Prader-Willi Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sleep related disordered breathing (SDB) in pediatric Prader-Willi Syndrome is gaining increased attention due to the possible association of growth hormone therapy, SDB and sudden death. However data on the patterns of SDB and their management, particularly in infants in this population, is lacking. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to 1) describe patterns of SDB in growth hormone naive infants with PWS and the management of these disorders in our institution 2) Compare the patterns of sleep disorders between infants and children with PWS. METHODS AND DESIGN: Polysomnograms o

Obese patients with sleep apnea syndrome treated by progesterone.

Two obese patients with sleep apnea syndrome were administered chlormadinone acetate (CMA), a synthetic progesterone, known as a potent respiratory stimulant to augment load compensation response as well as CO2 chemosensitivity. Before CMA administration, both cases showed normal chemosensitivity of hypoxic and hypercapnic ventilatory responses (HVR and HCVR) at daytime, although marked oxygen desaturation with sleep apnea was observed. During CMA administration for 7 days, HVR, HCVR and occlusion pressure response to flow-resistive loading were altogether augmented. In one case obstructive sl

Multiple sleep latency test by polysomnography: a case report.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome may disguise the presence of other less common but equally important etiologies of sleepiness in patients presenting to sleep disorder specialists. In this case report the authors detail how multiple polysomnograms performed over 6 years eventually suggested that a patient had both obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

Energy based feature extraction for classification of sleep apnea syndrome.

In this paper it is aimed to classify sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) by using discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) and an artificial neural network (ANN). The abdominal and thoracic respiration signals are separated into spectral components by using multi-resolution DWT. Then the energy of these spectral components are applied to the inputs of the ANN. The neural network was configured to give three outputs to classify the SAS situation of the subject. The apnea can be mainly classified into three types: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA) and mixed sleep apnea (MSA). During OSA,

[Is pharmacologic treatment of sleep apnea efficient?].

High frequency of sleep disturbed breathing in adults is increasingly recognized. Obstructive sleep apnea, defined as the recurring obstruction of the upper airway is documented in 24% of adult males and 9% of females. The highest incidence is in the sixth decade. Snoring accompany 24% of middle aged man and 14% of females of the same age. Sleep apnea with the central origin, defined as the transient and recurrent cessation of breathing during sleep, is less frequent than obstructive sleep apnea. It can be identified in the wide spectrum of patients with medical, neurologic and neuromuscular d

Normal-tension glaucoma is associated with sleep apnea syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: In normal-tension glaucoma, optic nerve damage occurs without elevated intraocular pressures, hence vascular and pathogenic mechanisms other than intraocular pressure effects have been postulated. However, the exact cause(s) remain unknown. We have looked for an association between normal-tension glaucoma and sleep apnea syndrome, a disease characterized by repetitive upper airway obstructions during sleep, inducing hypoxia and sleep disruption with the risk of late cardiovascular and neurological sequelae. METHODS: We performed overnight polysomnography in 16 consecutive Caucas

The effect of buprenorphine vs methadone on sleep breathing disorders.

Opioids are used widely as analgesics and can play an important role in agonist maintenance therapy for opium dependence. Despite their benefits, the negative effects on the respiratory system remain an important side effect to be considered. Ataxic breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, and most of all central sleep apnea are among these concerns. Obstructive sleep apnea leads to various metabolic, cardiovascular, cognitive, and mental side effects and may result in abrupt mortality. Buprenorphine is a semisynthetic opioid, a partial mu-opioid agonist with limited respiratory toxicity preferably

Sleep apnea, "the Ugly Duckling of the Cinderellas" in cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and account for the largest share of health expenditure worldwide, mainly invested in hospital and secondary care. Prevention and rehabilitation strategies are nearly neglected, therefore "the Cinderellas," in the health-care budget. The World Health Organization has proposed cost-effective interventions to reduce the impact of cardiovascular diseases that include polydrug treatment for hypertension and diabetes, counselling, diet, exercise, and others. Obstructive sleep apnea is not even mentioned among these interventions; consequently,

Normal values for respiratory sleep polygraphy in children aged 4 to 9 years at 2,560 m above sea level.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome affects 1%-4% of all children worldwide. Currently, diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea is based on sea-level guidelines, without taking into account the altitude at which the populations live. It has been shown that at 3,200 m of altitude there is an increase in obstructive events in healthy children aged 7 to 16 years; on the other hand, it is known that SpO2 dispersion between individuals becomes wider as altitude increases, a phenomenon that is more marked during sleep. About 17 million Colombians live in regions between 2,500 m and 2,700 m, as do signific

Relationships between nutritional knowledge, obesity, and sleep disorder severity.

Obstructive sleep apnea affects 20% of the adult population. Weight control is considered the best non-medical means of managing the condition, therefore improving nutritional knowledge in individuals may be an appropriate strategy. This study aimed to describe the relationship between nutritional knowledge and: (i) sleep disorder severity; (ii) body mass index; and (iii) demographic characteristics in persons suspected of obstructive sleep apnea. Nutrition knowledge scores were also compared with the general population. Consecutive newly-referred patients attending the sleep laboratory for di

Gender differences in age and BMI distributions in partial upper airway obstruction during sleep.

The obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome occurs more frequently and with higher apnea-hypopnea indices in men than in women. To investigate the gender differences we extended our respiratory analyses during sleep to cover not only periodic obstruction (apnea and hypopnea) but also nonperiodic partial upper airway obstruction during sleep and their associations with increasing age or body mass index (BMI). The clinical sleep recordings with the static-charge-sensitive bed (SCSB) and oximeter were reviewed in 233 age and BMI-matched men-women pairs. Periodic obstruction increased with incre
