BACKGROUND: Sleep undergoes changes from birth to adulthood, while sleep disorders are associated with various cognitive deficiencies in childhood. In parallel, prematurity is known to predispose to poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Our aim is to provide literature data about factors influencing sleep in the premature infants and sleep outcomes in this population.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using a variety of health-related databases. Original research papers were considered and no year-of-publication restriction was placed.
RESULTS: In total, 22 articles fulfilled our select

People with RA commonly experience fatigue. Fatigue is a key contributor to increased clinical care costs, primary care consultations and employment loss. Despite this, our understanding of the prognostic of factors of poor fatigue outcomes is lacking and fatigue is poorly managed. Examining longitudinal predictors of fatigue can identify both individuals 'at risk' of poor prognosis, and candidate mechanisms that are worthy of greater inspection. This review discusses the factors most commonly investigated as being implicated in the prognosis of RA fatigue. The available data appears to implic

BACKGROUND: Non motor symptoms (NMS) of Parkinson's disease (PD) are common and can be more disabling than motor symptoms. Sleep disorders can be seen in up to 98% of patients with Parkinson disease. Poor sleep quality has been associated with poverty and race, and yet there has been no prior report on sleep disorders in those with PD living in sub Saharan Africa. We wished to document the prevalence of sleep disorders in PD patients in Ethiopia.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional point prevalence study from July 1 to October 30, 2015 of all patients attending the neurology outpatient de

Osteoporosis (OP) is a common bone disease characterized by decreased bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of estrogen on OP. Bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) surgery was performed to establish the OP mouse model. Histological analysis was performed using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and alizarin red S (ARS) staining. Angiogenetic factors were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were determined using quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Protein express

Sleep disturbances are common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. However, the underlying neuropathological mechanisms are largely unclear. Previous studies have revealed the important role of the thalamus in the potential mechanisms of sleep disorders. We hypothesized that the sleep disturbances in ESRD patients may correspond to metabolic changes of thalamus and the uremic factors may have a vital contribution on these changes. We performed multi-voxel 1H-MRS of bilateral thalami in 27 ESRD patients who currently receiving hemodialysis treatment and 21 age-matched healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an extremely common childhood disease, with considerable impact on the quality of life of affected children and their families. While pruritus is the hallmark symptom of this disease, AD has been well-documented to impact patients beyond physical symptoms, resulting in behavior problems, mood disorders, and sleep disturbance.
OBJECTIVE: This literature review outlines how atopic dermatitis impacts the quality of life of families of children affected by AD.
METHODS: A total of 3436 articles were identified via an online search of the MEDLINE health litera

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder (RMD) (ie, sleep-related repetitive movements involving large muscle groups) can impair sleep quality, cause local injury, and disturb household members. Previous parental reports indicate prevalence rates in children under three years of age between 5.5 and 67%. We studied the prevalence of RMD with objective home videosomnography.
METHODS: Parents of 707 children having their one-year routine health check (357 male), 740 children having their two-year health check (395 male), and 17 children of unknown age (nine male), were asked

BACKGROUND: Trauma-exposed women may be at magnified risk for posttraumatic stress (PTSS) and depression symptoms in the perinatal period, but few studies have examined symptomatology across the perinatal period in high-risk samples. Further, the role of sleep in perinatal symptomatology has been largely neglected in the violence literature, despite its well-established associations to mental health in other samples. This study aimed to examine the trajectory of PTSS and depression symptoms across the perinatal period and the effects of childhood adversity, intimate partner violence and prenat

There are a few syndromes involving the nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders that can quickly lead to severe morbidity and mortality, and, as such, need rapid identification and management. Among these are neuroleptic malignant syndrome, serotonin syndrome, dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome, and dystonic storm. It is important to maintain a high index of suspicion for these disorders as lack of identification can lead to death. Many of these acutely occurring nonmotor syndromes are primarily the result of imbalances in dopaminergic and serotonergic systems d

Psychoactive drugs pose a risk to both the diver and his or her buddy. Little is known about the safety of diving with antidepressants. Amongst the potential interactions with the diving environment are: somnolence; convulsions; a bleeding tendency (potentially worsening decompression illness, DCI), alterations to glucose metabolism and psychiatric side effects. Fluoxetine may potentially reduce the inflammatory process associated with DCI. This article presents guidelines for recreational diving in combination with antidepressants. These guidelines were endorsed at a meeting of the Dutch Asso

OBJECTIVE: Patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) often describe symptoms of fatigue, sleepiness, and lack of refreshing sleep. We aimed to provide further objective measures of sleep in patients with POTS.
METHODS: POTS patients (n = 18) were selected based on autonomic testing and evaluation at our center. Controls (n = 16) of similar age, gender, and BMI were selected from new patients referred to the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic for any sleep-related complaint. All patients underwent polysomnography and completed several sleep questionnaires and a 2-week sleep diary.

Frequency and predictors of nightmares among children 7-11 years old with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; n = 42) and no diagnosis (n = 44) were examined using both prospective and retrospective child and parent reports. Both children with GAD and their parents reported significantly more nightmares than controls based on retrospective reports, but the groups did not differ when nightmares were assessed daily across a one-week prospective period. Females reported more nightmares than males according to prospective assessment only. Controlling for sex and group, child sleep anxiety and presl

BACKGROUND: Identification of non-traditional risk factors is an important component of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). However, the prevalence and predictors of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and its influence on exercise performance in patients attending CR remain poorly described.
METHODS: Patients enrolled in a national CR centre were eligible for a comprehensive SDB screening program. Screening questionnaires for SDB, overnight sleep study, and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) were conducted.
RESULTS: We recruited 332 patients (mean age 62±10 years, 62.4% male) attending CR for primary (29.

OBJECTIVES: In patients who exhibit myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), sleep disorders and breathing impairments are common; however, in those with DM type 2 (DM2), limited studies on polysomnography (PSG) and none on phrenic compound motor action potential (CMAP) have been performed, which is the aim of this study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with DM2 were questioned about respiratory symptoms. They underwent PSG with morning arterial gas analyses (AGA). Respiratory functions and phrenic CMAPs were studied. The data were compared to those of 16 healthy controls and 25 patients with

The response to an exercise intervention is often described in general terms, with the assumption that the group average represents a typical response for most individuals. In reality, however, it is more common for individuals to show a wide range of responses to an intervention rather than a similar response. This phenomenon of 'high responders' and 'low responders' following a standardized training intervention may provide helpful insights into mechanisms of training adaptation and methods of training prescription. Therefore, the aim of this review was to discuss factors associated with int
