Depressive and anxiety symptoms, dysfunctional attitudes and social aspects in irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVE: Biopsychosocial models for both organic and functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders have been described in the recent literature. The objective of this study was to give further data to this model by assessing stressful life events, social support, psychopathological symptoms, and dysfunctional attitudes in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and healthy subjects. METHOD: Age- and gender-matched IBS and IBD patients presenting at a tertiary care gastroenterological center completed self-reported questionnaires on stressful life events, social support…

Cognitive impairment and social distress as different pathways to depression in the elderly: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the recent suggestion that some putative aetiological factors for depression, such as cerebral deterioration and social distress, may act differentially in the aetiology of depression in old age. METHOD: In a cross-sectional study, a community sample of 654 elderly subjects were interviewed with Short-CARE to assess the prevalence of depression and cognitive impairment. Information was collected for a variety of potential risk factors for depression such as exposure to social support deficit, threatening life events, impairment, disability and handicap. RE…

From 'parallel world' to 'trading zone': How diabetes-related information from social media is (not) discussed in clinical consultations.

In today's digital world, people with type 1 and 2 diabetes turn to peers on social media to access and share information. Some studies have addressed how such information is discussed in clinical consultations, but conceptual nuances are needed to account for the different ways information is discussed. In this article, we draw on semi-structured interviews with 19 clinicians and 25 people with diabetes to examine how diabetes-related information from social media is discussed in Danish outpatient clinical consultations. The data were collected from September 2020 to January 2021. We conceptu

WCA recommendations for the long-term treatment of social phobia.

What is the best approach for treating patients with social phobia (social anxiety disorder) over the long term? Social phobia is the most common anxiety disorder, with reported prevalence rates of up to 18.7%. Social phobia is characterized by a marked and persistent fear of being observed or evaluated by others in social performance or interaction situations and is associated with physical, cognitive, and behavioral (ie, avoidance) symptoms. The onset of social phobia typically occurs in childhood or adolescence and the clinical course, if left untreated, is usually chronic, unremitting, and

Understanding how movement signals shape early social coordination and learning.

From early in life, social interactions rely on a rich exchange of nonverbal information. This review paper focuses on the nonverbal, kinematic information conveyed by how social partners move and proposes that such movement modulations may facilitate interpersonal coordination between infants and adults, as well as support infants' learning in early interactions. So far, findings on movement modulations have been investigated in isolation: sensorimotor communication in interpersonal coordination between adults (signaling) on the one hand, and in early teaching interactions between adults and

Navigating hostility: digital and social strategies among young men who have sex with men in Southern Nigeria.

In Nigeria, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men face a challenging socio-legal environment characterised by criminal laws and moral restrictions, which impact their health, identity, and sense of belonging. Findings from this study of young men who have sex with men illustrate how they navigate such restrictions through both digital and social means. Reflexive thematic analysis grounded in queer theory and social identity theory was used to analyse data from in-depth interviews with 30 men who have sex with men aged 18 to 29 from five southern states, complemented by non-particip

Caring over computing: an ethical and sociotechnical perspective on digital technologies for social connectedness in dementia care.

People with dementia in residential care often experience reduced social connectedness. Person-centered care approaches foreground meaningful social interactions to support well-being, but staff and time pressures increasingly constrain opportunities for such care. Digital technologies offer possibilities to help care professionals facilitate social connectedness, despite increasing care pressures. Yet, the meaningful integration of such technologies into the complex sociotechnical setting of residential dementia care is not straightforward. To responsibly design and position digital technolog

Gendernauts in the Cistem - How Do Nonbinary People Handle Social Groups and Gender Minority Stress?

This study explores how nonbinary individuals manage minority stress within the predominantly binary society of Switzerland. Utilizing social identity theory and minority stress theory, along with thematic analysis of focus group interviews with 16 nonbinary individuals and 14 social identity maps, the study found three concentric circles of social groups: circle 1 (family, partners, friends), circle 2 (coworkers, LGBTIQA+ communities), and circle 3 (the public, media, Swiss institutions). Participants primarily felt affirmed and supported by circles 1 and 2. They reported feeling less support

Childhood Evolved Developmental Niche History and Autonomic Regulation in Women.

Early life adversity has been studied widely, but still understudied is the impact of positive early life experiences. Emerging evidence suggests that humanity's millions-year-old evolved developmental niche (EDN) supports healthy biopsychosocial development. The EDN includes positive touch, responsive relationships, a welcoming social climate, social embeddedness, and self-directed free play. We examined the relation between EDN components and cardiac vagal regulation, the online biomarker for psychopathology, health, and a correlate of positive parenting behaviors. Women (N = 78; 84% white/E

Validation of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Brief (MY-Soc-B) Scale with adolescents.

The present study validates a brief version of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Scale, the MY-Soc-B, which assesses Multiracial youths' experiences of receiving messages from their caregivers about race and culture. Using a sample of 318 diverse Multiracial American adolescents (Mage = 16.01; SD = 1.30), the original 62 items were reduced to 24 items via an examination of confirmatory factor analyses and conceptual clarity and fit of item content. The model fit strongly supported retaining the eight-factor structure from the original full version. Validity and reliability of the eight subsc

Measuring social anxiety related interpersonal constraint with the flexible iterated prisoner's dilemma.

Data from self-report and observational studies make it clear that problematic social anxiety confers interpersonal constraint that may contribute to the interpersonal dysfunction reported by individuals with social anxiety disorder. Direct observation of interpersonal behavior in established relationships is rare and difficult to obtain for practical reasons. We tested a flexible iterated prisoner's dilemma computer task to examine whether it might capture interpersonal constraint related to social anxiety. Our first study suggested that, at least for men, the task directly captures social an

Modelling relationships between cognitive variables during and following public speaking in participants with social phobia.

Cognitive models of social phobia predict that several cognitive processes will mediate the relationship between trait levels of social anxiety and the extent of anxiety experienced in a specific social-evaluative situation. The current study aimed to provide a test of these relationships. Over 200 clinical participants with social phobia completed measures of their general social anxiety and a week later performed a brief impromptu speech. They completed a measure of state anxiety in response to the speech as well as questionnaires assessing several cognitive constructs including focus of per

Factor structure of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factor structure of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents (LSAS-CA). The LSAS-CA was administered to 225 children and adolescents as a component of various clinical studies. In addition, other measures of psychopathology and impairment were administered to a subgroup of the sample. Confirmatory factor analyses of the social interaction and performance subscales for the anxiety and avoidance ratings yielded poor fit indices. Exploratory factor analysis supported a two-factor solution with a higher order factor for the LSAS-
