A total of 2401 isolates of Haemophilus parainfluenzae was isolated from respiratory secretions of 36 healthy adults and 128 patients with chronic bronchitis over a period of 1 year. Sfericase, a novel protease produced by a strain of Bacillus sphaericus, has endopeptidase activity. Sfericase inhibits various experimental acute inflammations and reduces viscosity of sputum obtained from subacute bronchitic rabbits by oral treatment. A low molecular fraction of serum obtained from animals given oral sfericase also has an anti-inflammatory effect. This result suggests that a secondarily produced substance might play a role in the manifestation of anti-inflammatory action. Therapy with moxalactam was evaluated in 71 patients with bacterial pneumonia. Ninety-two percent of patients with pneumonia due to gram-positive cocci, anaerobes, or Haemophilus influenzae were cured.
