Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and Western blot analysis, we were able to identify and quantify six antioxidant proteins, peroxiredoxin (Prx) I, Prx II, Prx III, 1-Cys Prx, putative peroxisomal antioxidant enzyme (PLP), and mitochondrial Mn superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) in two individual brain regions, cerebellum and frontal cortex of patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jacob (sCJD). The degradation of tetrachloromethane (carbon tetrachloride-CT) by modified Fenton's reagent (catalyzed hydrogen peroxide) was investigated using a range of hydrogen peroxide concentrations and 1 mM iron(III) catalyst. Cases of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS) are associated with mutations in cytosolic copper, zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1). Total SOD activity and functional mitochondrial properties were studied in muscles and nervous tissues of control and transgenic mice mimicking the disease. We used primary cultures of rat hepatocytes injured by the hepatotoxin, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), as a test system to screen for hepatoprotective compounds from natural products. An oxidative detoxification of sulfite, which originates from sulfur dioxide taken up into a leaf, has not yet been fully understood. In this study, we discuss that redox reactions between sulfite and H2O2 have an important role for the detoxification of sulfite. AIM: To study changes in the condition of lymphocyte membranes of patients with acute viral hepatitis B (AVHB) in narcotic addicts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 136 patients with AVHB have been examined for endogenic intoxication (plasma levels of middle-size molecular peptides, urine levels of red cells). 74% of the examinees had practiced parenteral injections of opium substitutes. Measurements were made of lymphocyte levels of malonic dialdehyde and superoxide dismutase activity characterizing free radical lipid peroxidation, enzymes of the main metabolic cycles.

Early signs of toxicity of essential trace elements are important. Some trace elements are available over-the-counter (OTC) and/or are present at industrial waste sites.
