Interaction of spirochetes with the host fibrinolytic system and potential roles in pathogenesis.

The pathogenic spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi, B. hermsii, B. recurrentis, Treponema denticola and Leptospira spp. are the etiologic agents of Lyme disease, relapsing fever, periodontitis and leptospirosis, respectively. Lyme borreliosis is a multi-systemic disorder and the most prevalent tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. Tick-borne relapsing fever is persistent in endemic areas worldwide, representing a significant burden in some African regions. Periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory disorder that often leads to tooth loss, is caused by several potential pathogens found i

Are teeth close to the cleft more susceptible to periodontal disease?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether teeth close to the cleft area present higher prevalence and severity of periodontal disease than teeth in other regions. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo. PATIENTS: There were 400 individuals with complete unilateral or bilateral cleft lip and palate, aged 15 to 49 years, without any previous periodontal treatment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: All clinical parameters were evaluated in six sites for each tooth. The arithmetic means were calculated for each sextant. RESULTS: Of the sexta

Dental visits among dentate adults with diabetes--United States, 1999 and 2004.

One of the major complications of diabetes is periodontal disease, a chronic infection of tissues supporting the teeth and a major cause of tooth loss. Adults with diabetes have both a higher prevalence of periodontal disease and more severe forms of the disease, contributing to impaired quality of life and substantial oral functional disability. In addition, periodontal disease has been associated with development of glucose intolerance and poor glycemic control among adults with diabetes. Regular dental visits provide opportunities for prevention, early detection, and treatment of periodonta

An example of measurement and reporting of periodontal loss of attachment (LOA) in epidemiological studies: smoking and periodontal tissue destruction.

The measurement and reporting of periodontal disease in epidemiological studies can be complex, with the common indices having well-recognised shortcomings. The aim of this study was to illustrate the use of the periodontal loss of attachment (LOA) approach in investigating the association between cigarette smoking and loss of periodontal attachment in a convenience sample of adults, in order to determine whether or not smoking was a risk indicator for periodontal disease. All participants were given a detailed periodontal clinical examination in two randomly assigned contralateral diagonal qu

Goals for oral health in Tunisia 2020.

In 1981, the World Health Organization (WHO) together with the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) set global dental health goals for the year 2000 within the global strategy of health for all. In 1999, a team of experts drew up new goals to be achieved by 2020, which aimed to facilitate specific oral health policy development for each country. These goals are more general and have to be adapted to local circumstances. This paper aimed to adapt the WHO/FDI/IADR's Global goals for oral health 2020 to Tunisia and draw up new national goals and targets for Tunisia based on previous national

Oral findings in a child with lipoid proteinosis: a case report and review.

Lipoid proteinosis, a very rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis, results in hyaline material deposition in the skin and mucous membrane of various organs leading to multisystem involvement. A case report of a 12-year-old female child is presented here who showed classic features of the disease with generalized thickening, hardening, and scarring of the skin and vocal cord infiltration causing voice changes. The patient also had numerous oral mucosal and dental findings. The knowledge of the clinical features of the disease may help the oral health professional in rendering the appropriate t

[Orthodontic tooth displacement: histology, biology and iatrogenic effects].

Iatrogenic effects of orthodontic forces, in particular root resorption, are described in the literature. However, our knowledge on the risk of osseous defects induced by orthodontic treatment is still scarce. After an overview of histological and biological principles of orthodontically-induced tooth movement, this study focuses on the recent data concerning the occurrence and the treatment of bone resorption associated with orthodontic treatment.

Dental health in liver transplant patients.

Since the first liver transplantation in Spain was carried out in 1984, advances in surgical technique and immunosuppressive drugs have facilitated an increase in the number of transplants performed. The present study evaluates buccodental health in liver transplant patients. A cross-sectional descriptive study was made of a sample of patients subjected to liver transplantation in Príncipes de España Hospital (Bellvitge University Health Care Complex, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona--Spain). Information was collected relating to demographic characteristics, general clinical history, bucco

Xylitol in the prevention of oral diseases.

Special needs populations such as the mentally disabled or developmentally disabled present a unique challenge for the dental professionals providing dental treatment. Among those challenges is oral health promotion through primary prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease. There are many barriers to adequate oral care for these special needs patients that include cost, physical limitations, low levels of perceived need and lack of dental knowledge by residents and staff, if the person resides in an institution. Primary prevention to maintain oral comfort and function for these patie

Isolated extramedullary relapse of acute myelogenous leukemia in a tooth.

We report a case of isolated extramedullary relapse of acute myelogenous leukemia in a tooth following bone marrow transplantation. The patient was a 4-yr-old child who developed gingival swelling and bleeding while in bone marrow remission. Crush artifact prevented definitive diagnosis of leukemic relapse in a biopsy of the gingival soft tissue, but decalcification of the tooth showed an unequivocal leukemic infiltrate in the dental pulp. Decalcification and sectioning of extracted teeth are recommended when equivocal findings are present in the gingival soft tissue or when there is a history

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy of demyelinating and remyelinating type in children. Ultrastructural and morphometric studies on sural nerve biopsy specimens from ten sporadic cases.

Ten autosomal recessive/sporadic cases of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I (HMSN I), nine of which originated from the northern part of Sweden, were included in the study. Parents were free from neurologic symptoms. Motor and sensory conduction velocity was normal when recorded, i.e., in 19 and 17 parents, respectively. Sural nerve biopsies from the ten cases revealed a varying degree of onion bulb formation. In eight of the cases the onion bulbs consisted of abundant basement membranes, whereas the Schwann cells were few and sometimes lacking. There were in some cases considerab

Dental disease in rabbits under UK primary veterinary care: Clinical management and associated welfare impacts.

BACKGROUND: Dental disease is a painful and highly prevalent condition in companion rabbits. However, the dental disease management techniques currently employed by UK primary-care veterinarians and potential associated clinical welfare implications are scarcely described. METHODS: Anonymised clinical records from primary-care practices participating in the VetCompass programme in 2019 were manually reviewed to identify cases of dental disease in rabbits. Clinical welfare implications were assessed through retrospective analysis of clinical signs, diagnostics and treatment information. RESUL

Residual Pockets as an Endpoint on Periodontal Disease Progression in Supportive Periodontal Care.

AIM: To investigate whether the number of residual probing pocket depths (PPDs) ≥ 5 mm predicts periodontitis progression in non-smoking patients undergoing supportive periodontal care (SPC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 121 patients (3028 teeth), with Stage III/IV, Grade B/C periodontitis, who completed active periodontal therapy and were enrolled in SPC. Multivariable logistic regression with inverse probability censoring weighting assessed the association between the number of residual sites with PPD ≥ 5 mm at the start of SPC and disease progression at 1-year a

Interrelationships between Refined Carbohydrates, Periodontal Diseases, and Cognitive Decline: A Narrative Review.

Accumulating studies suggest that carbohydrate quality influences both oral and cognitive health. Diets rich in refined carbohydrates promote insulin resistance, oxidative stress, inflammation, and disrupt oral microbiota. These changes contribute to periodontal disease and neurodegeneration. Periodontitis is associated with cognitive decline via inflammation, bacterial translocation, and blood-brain barrier disruption. Although less extensively studied, reverse pathways may also operate. Cognitive decline may alter dietary behavior through neurohormonal changes, increasing preference for swee

Beyond traditional diagnosis: aptamer-based microRNA detection for the early diagnosis of periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a prevalent, chronic inflammatory disease linked to microbial dysbiosis and host immune response, leading to destruction of the tooth-supporting structures. Traditional diagnostic methods, though widely used, are limited in their ability to detect early-stage disease and monitor real-time progression. Recent research highlights the significance of microRNAs (miRNAs) as non-invasive biomarkers, particularly in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), for the early detection of periodontitis. This review explores the emerging role of aptamer-based biosensors in miRNA detectio
