Cortical centres underlying auditory temporal processing in humans: a PET study.

We have used positron emission tomography (PET) to test a specific hypothesis of a neural system subserving auditory temporal processing (acoustical stimulus duration discrimination). Maps of the cerebral blood flow distribution during specific stimulations were obtained from five normally-hearing and otherwise healthy subjects. The auditory stimuli consisted of sounds of varying duration and of auditorily presented words in which the duration of the initial phoneme was manipulated. All stimuli alternated with conditions of silence in a subtraction paradigm. The blood flow distribution was map

[Processes of speech production: Application in a group of subjects chronically exposed to organic solvents (II)].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of chronic exposition to neurotoxic solvents in a group of laundry operators by means of Vocal Reaction Times (VRTs) measurements. A group of normal subjects, matched for age and educational level, constituted the controls. Vocal Reaction Times were measured by a device that presented to each subject a sequence of words on a computer screen, acquired the acoustic signal and measured VRTs and durations. During the test a random sequence of words was presented to the subjects; the protocol consisted of two immediate reading task and two delayed r

Accumulation of nerve growth factor in cerebrospinal fluid and biological activity following neurosurgery.

Perioperative nerve growth factor (NGF) levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with acoustic neurinoma (14 cases), tentorial meningioma (1 case), or subarachnoid hemorrhage (1 case) were examined. Preoperative NGF levels in CSF were below the level of detection in all patients. However, NGF was found to accumulate transiently in CSF following neurosurgery. Pre- and postoperative CSF obtained from a patient with acoustic neurinoma enhanced the proliferation of astrocytes in neuronal cell cultures derived from embryonic rat cortex grown in serum-free defined medium, and increased cholin

Sudden hearing loss in multiple sclerosis: case report.

This case illustrates the occurrence of a sudden hearing sensitivity loss that, in all likelihood, was the result of brainstem disorder resulting from multiple sclerosis (MS). Subject LD is a young woman who developed a sudden hearing loss while hospitalized for exacerbation of symptoms related to multiple sclerosis. By her own report, she had normal hearing in her left ear at the time of hospitalization. Four days after admission, she developed a hearing loss in her left ear, accompanied by roaring tinnitus and fullness. An audiologic evaluation revealed a substantial high-frequency sensitivi

[Sensorineural hearing loss following the decompression of the facial nerve].

This study aims to ascertain whether sensorineural hearing loss occurs after the decompression of the facial nerve. Nine patients have undergone decompression of the facial nerve (limited to the vertical segment) by the transmastoid approach were selected as the subjects of this study because the influence of disinfectants and surgical trauma on the inner ear seems to be less severe in this operation than in tympanoplasty. Additionally, this approach seems to be more suitable for judgement of the effect of the drilling noise induced acoustic trauma on the inner ear than tympanoplasty. Though h

Brainstem auditory evoked potential abnormalities and magnetic resonance imaging in posterior fossa lesions.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were evaluated in a series of 15 patients with extra-axial cerebello-pontine angle tumors (3 cases), demyelinating plaques (11 cases), and intra-axial tumor (1 case), verified by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A satisfactory correlation between the location of the lesions and the type of BAEP abnormalities was found in 11 cases. In 2 other cases, definite MRI brainstem lesions located outside the acoustic pathways were associated with normal BAEPs. In the opposite situation (2 cases of BAEP abnormalities with normal MRI), the inability of MRI to

Stroboscopy--a pertinent laryngological examination.

When observing the vocal fold movements in their laryngoscopic examination, most laryngologists seem to be trained to consider only the gross respiratory movements of the folds, i.e. abduction and adduction. these movements constitute an essential part of the vitally important valve function of the larynx, preventing aspiration and providing parts of the mechanisms for normal swallowing, coughing, and straining. The second important function of the larynx is to serve as a transducer of aerodynamic to acoustic energy; the voice function. Probably for reasons of tradition, the examination of the

Mathematical and computational modelling of cochlear responses to environmental noise exposure: A preliminary multiscale computational study.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental noise is recognised by the World Health Organization and the European Environment Agency as a major environmental risk factor. However, the biophysical mechanisms linking acoustic exposure to cochlear mechanical and neural responses remain incompletely characterised. OBJECTIVE: This preliminary study organises established cochlear modelling approaches within a multiscale computational framework to examine how environmental sound levels are translated into passive mechanical responses and simulated neural activity. METHODS: Passive in silico simulations were perfor

The Comparison Between Inhalation and Total Intravenous Anesthesia Effect on Voice With Supraglottic Airway Devices for Short-term Anesthesia.

OBJECTIVE: Supraglottic airway devices (SADs) are a good alternative to endotracheal intubation (ETI) in short-term anesthesia applications since they have advantages including easy application, lower cost, enabling spontaneous ventilation. Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) and desflurane anesthesia allowing rapid recovery are anesthesia methods to be selected. Inhalation anesthesia by desflurane may cause adverse effects on airway mucosa and vocal cord functions. The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of the chosen anesthesia method on voice in gynecological patients who und

A Modeling-Guided Case Study of Disordered Speech in Minimally Verbal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Purpose Understanding what limits speech development in minimally verbal (MV) children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is important for providing highly effective targeted therapies. This preliminary investigation explores the extent to which developmental speech deficits predicted by Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA), a computational model of speech production, exemplify real phenotypes. Method Implementing a motor speech disorder in DIVA predicted that speech would become highly variable within and between tokens, while implementing a motor speech plus an auditory process

Protein kinase CK2 is widely expressed in follicular, Burkitt and diffuse large B-cell lymphomas and propels malignant B-cell growth.

The acoustic startle response is a protective response, elicited by a sudden and intense acoustic stimulus. Facial and skeletal muscles are activated within a few milliseconds, leading to a whole body flinch in rodents(1). Although startle responses are reflexive responses that can be reliably elicited, they are not stereotypic. They can be modulated by emotions such as fear (fear potentiated startle) and joy (joy attenuated startle), by non-associative learning processes such as habituation and sensitization, and by other sensory stimuli through sensory gating processes (prepulse inhibition),

Integrated ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging for simultaneous temperature and cavitation monitoring during focused ultrasound therapies.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound can be used to noninvasively produce different bioeffects via viscous heating, acoustic cavitation, or their combination, and these effects can be exploited to develop a wide range of therapies for cancer and other disorders. In order to accurately localize and control these different effects, imaging methods are desired that can map both temperature changes and cavitation activity. To address these needs, the authors integrated an ultrasound imaging array into an MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) system to simultaneously visualize thermal and mechanical effects via pa

Coupled capillary-cavitation model for secondary droplet breakup in high-intensity ultrasonic field.

A coupled physics-based model is developed to describe secondary breakup of levitating droplets in a high-intensity ultrasonic standing wave field. The model uniquely integrates acoustic radiation pressure-induced droplet deformation, parametric excitation of capillary waves, radial oscillations and collective interaction of cavitation bubbles, and energy accumulation in the system. The methodology involves simultaneous numerical solution of the Mathieu-Hill equation, the Rayleigh-Plesset equation with inter-bubble pressure coupling, and energy conservation principles.
