A comparison of the alcohol-attributable mortality in four European countries.

BACKGROUND: Deaths due to alcohol consumption are an important component of all-cause mortality, particularly premature mortality. However, there are considerable regional variations, the reasons for which are unclear. METHODS: Estimates were made as reliably as possibly using vital statistics and best estimates of risk of the alcohol-attributable mortality, by age, sex and cause for four European countries (England and Wales, Germany, Denmark and Italy). Twenty-seven alcohol-related conditions were considered including the possible cardio-protective effects of alcohol. RESULTS: It was estim

Relationships between nutrition, alcohol use, and liver disease.

Many alcoholics are malnourished, either because they ingest too little of essential nutrients (e.g., carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins) or because alcohol and its metabolism prevent the body from properly absorbing, digesting, and using those nutrients. As a result, alcoholics frequently experience deficiencies in proteins and vitamins, particularly vitamin A, which may contribute to liver disease and other serious alcohol-related disorders. Furthermore, alcohol breakdown in the liver, both by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase and by an enzyme system called the microsomal ethanol-oxidizing…

Breath alcohol ignition interlock devices: controlling the recidivist.

This study compares the recidivism rates of two groups of Illinois drivers who had their driver's licenses revoked for alcohol-impaired driving and who received restricted driving permits. Drivers in both groups had more than two driving under the influence (DUI) actions against their record within 5 years or were classed as level III alcohol dependents. Drivers in one group were required to install breath alcohol ignition interlock devices in their vehicles and drivers in the other group were not. The research found that drivers with the interlock were one-fifth as likely to be arrested for D

The effect of alcohol consumption on endothelial adhesion molecule expression.

Endothelial adhesion molecules (AM) play an important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases namely infections, neoplasms and chronic … therosclerosis. However, at higher doses ethanol may exert an inflammatory effect. In fact, chronic alcoholics exhibit significantly higher serum levels of endothelial AM than abstainers and moderate drinkers. In addition, an upregulation of E-selectin, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 is also detected in liver biopsies obtained from patients with alcoholic hepatitis and c …

Alcohol concentration and risk of oral cancer in Puerto Rico.

Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for cancers of the mouth and pharynx (oral cancer), but the differential risks by beverage type are unclear. In this 1992-1995 study, the authors examined oral cancer risk in Puerto Rico, comparing alcohol intake among 286 male cases aged 21-79 years and 417 population-based male controls, frequency matched by age. Heavy consumers of liquor (>/=43 drinks per week) had strongly increased risks of oral cancer (odds ratio = 6.4, 95% confidence interval: 2.4, 16.8); beer/wine showed only modest effects. Among liquor drinkers, risks were consistently great

Comparison of cyanamide and placebo in the treatment of alcohol dependence of adolescents.

AIMS: About 50% of alcoholic patients relapse within 3 months of treatment. Previous studies have suggested that cyanamide may help to prevent such relapse. The aim of our study was to assess the efficacy and safety of long-term cyanamide treatment in alcohol dependence of adolescents. METHODS: In this, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we recruited 26 patients, aged 16-19 years, with chronic (frequent and regular) or episodic (frequent, but irregular) alcohol dependence. Patients were randomly allocated treatment with cyanamide (200 mg daily) or a placebo for 90 days. Patients were ass

Synthesis of daidzin analogues as potential agents for alcohol abuse.

Daidzin, the active principle of an herbal remedy for 'alcohol addiction', has been shown to reduce alcohol consumption in all laboratory animals tested to date. Correlation studies using structural analogues of daidzin suggests that it acts by raising the monoamine oxidase (MAO)/mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH-2) activity ratio (J. Med. Chem. 2000, 43, 4169). Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies on the 7-O-substituted analogues of daidzin have revealed structural features important for ALDH-2 and MAO inhibition (J. Med. Chem. 2001, 44, 3320). We here evaluated effects of s

The interactive effects of alcohol and temazepam on P300 and reaction time.

The present research investigated the separate and interactive effects of the minor tranquilizer, temazepam, and a low dose of alcohol on the amplitude and latency of P300 and on reaction time. Twenty-four participants completed four drug treatments in a repeated measures design. The four drug treatments, organised as a fully repeated 2 x 2 design, included a placebo condition, an alcohol only condition, a temazepam only condition, and an alcohol and temazepam combined condition. Event-related potentials were recorded from midline sites Fz, Cz, and Pz within an oddball paradigm. The results in

Electrospinning of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) fibers.

Solutions of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) or EVOH, ranging in composition from 56 to 71 wt% vinyl alcohol, can be readily electrospun at room temperature from solutions in 70% 2-propanol/water (rubbing alcohol). The solutions are prepared at 80 degrees C and allowed to cool to room temperature. Interestingly, the solutions are not stable at room temperature and eventually the polymer precipitates after several hours. However, prior to precipitation, electrospinning is extensive and rapid, allowing coverage of fibers on various substrates, including a grounded metal plate, dielectrics interp

Low dose amiodarone causing pseudo-alcoholic cirrhosis.

Amiodarone is a commonly used anti-arrhythmic in elderly patients. Abnormal liver function is frequently reported with its use but clinically symptomatic disease is rare. Hepatomegaly, cholestasis, acute hepatitis and rarely fulminant liver failure have been recorded [1, 2], however amiodarone toxicity presenting with cirrhosis is exceedingly rare. Toxic effects of amiodarone are well described with higher dosage but severe hepatic toxicity and cirrhosis with low dose amiodarone has not been reported in the English language literature. We present a report on a patient with pseudo-alcoholic cir

Chemosensory factors influencing alcohol perception, preferences, and consumption.

This article presents the proceedings of a symposium at the 2002 RSA/ISBRA Meeting in San Francisco, California, co-organized by Julie A. Mennella and Alexander A. Bachmanov of the Monell Chemical Senses Center. The goal of this symposium was to review the role that chemosensory factors (taste, smell, and chemical irritation) play in the perception, preference, and consumption of alcohol. The presented research focused on both humans and laboratory animals and used a variety of approaches including genetic, developmental, pharmacological, behavioral, and psychophysical studies. The presentatio

A school-based screening program for fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a common cause of birth defects and neuropsychiatric impairment. Identification of affected people is crucial for early entry into intervention programs and for the development of prevalence estimates. The objective of this project was to determine if screening for FAS in a community elementary school-based setting was feasible, to estimate prevalence in the screened population, and to determine if a screening program for FAS can be implemented using available personnel from the community. The FAS Screen was used to screen kindergarten students enrolled in a sch

Alcohol promotes dopamine release in the human nucleus accumbens.

Microdialysis experiments in rodents indicate that ethanol promotes dopamine release predominantly in the nucleus accumbens, a phenomenon that is implicated in the reinforcing effects of drugs of abuse. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis in humans that an oral dose of ethanol would lead to dopamine release in the ventral striatum, including the nucleus accumbens. Six healthy subjects underwent two [(11)C]raclopride PET scans following either alcohol (1 ml/kg) in orange juice or orange juice alone. Subjective mood changes, heart rate, and blood-alcohol levels were monitored

Prevalence and pathogenesis of duodenal ulcer in chronic alcoholic pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of duodenal ulcer (DU) has been considered high in patients with chronic pancreatitis; however, its pathogenesis is unclear. We hypothesized that Helicobacter pylori infection plays the major pathogenetic role. STUDY: One hundred seven cases (97 men, 10 women) of chronic alcoholic pancreatitis (CAP) were prospectively investigated from 1997 to 2001. One hundred thirty-seven DU patients and 59 nonulcer dyspepsia patients formed the two control groups. Pancreatic function was evaluated by determination of fecal fat excretion and fasting blood glucose concentration. Up
