Natural History of Truncal Root Dilatation and Truncal Valve Regurgitation in Truncus Arteriosus.

BACKGROUND: The natural history of the dilated truncal root in repaired truncus arteriosus (TA) is incompletely understood. METHODS: A single-center review of patients who underwent TA repair between January 1984 and December 2018 was performed. Echocardiographically determined root diameters and derived z scores were measured at the annulus, sinus of Valsalva (SoV), and sinutubular junction (STJ) immediately before TA repair and throughout follow-up. Linear mixed-effects models assessed trends in root dimensions over time. RESULTS: Of 193 patients who underwent TA repair at a median age of

Short-Term Effects of Different Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Devices on Mitral Valve Geometry.

Background Short-term effects on mitral valve (MV) anatomy after transcatheter edge-to-edge repair using the PASCAL system remain unknown. Precise quantification might allow for an advanced analysis of predictors for mean transmitral gradients. Methods and Results Consecutive patients undergoing transcatheter edge-to-edge repair for secondary mitral regurgitation using PASCAL or MitraClip systems were included. Quantification of short-term MV changes throughout the cardiac cycle was performed using peri-interventional 3-dimensional MV images. Predictors for mean transmitral gradients were iden

Racial, Ethnic, and Gender Variations in Sinonasal Anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Complications during endoscopic sinus surgery often result from unfavorable anatomy. The prevalence rates of such anatomic findings vary tremendously in the literature, in part due to the small, homogenous populations previously studied. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the prevalence of sinonasal anatomic variants among ethnic groups and genders seen at an academic medical center. METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study of adult subjects who underwent CT imaging of the sinuses from January 2019 to November 2020 at a tertiary academic setting. CT scans were analyzed syst

Accurate and robust whole-head segmentation from magnetic resonance images for individualized head modeling.

Transcranial brain stimulation (TBS) has been established as a method for modulating and mapping the function of the human brain, and as a potential treatment tool in several brain disorders. Typically, the stimulation is applied using a one-size-fits-all approach with predetermined locations for the electrodes, in electric stimulation (TES), or the coil, in magnetic stimulation (TMS), which disregards anatomical variability between individuals. However, the induced electric field distribution in the head largely depends on anatomical features implying the need for individually tailored stimul

Dosimetric and radiobiological investigation of permanent implant prostate brachytherapy based on Monte Carlo calculations.

PURPOSE: Permanent implant prostate brachytherapy plays an important role in prostate cancer treatment, but dose evaluations typically follow the water-based TG-43 formalism, ignoring patient anatomy and interseed attenuation. The purpose of this study is to investigate advanced TG-186 model-based dose calculations via retrospective dosimetric and radiobiological analysis for a new patient cohort. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A cohort of 155 patients treated with permanent implant prostate brachytherapy from The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre is considered. Monte Carlo (MC) dose calculations are per

Proof-of-concept prototype drill-guide for use in medial patello-femoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction surgery.

For surgical reconstruction of the medial patello-femoral ligament (MPFL) a variety of techniques are used for fixation of the graft to the medial border of the patella. The bone bridge or V-shaped tunnel technique utilises two tunnels drilled from the medial aspect of the patella that converge centrally creating a tunnel through which the graft is threaded. This technique has advantages: it avoids hardware (bone anchors) and their associated complications, creates a broad attachment of the ligament approximating normal anatomy and the tunnel does not breach the lateral cortex of the patella r

Curved planar reformatting and convolutional neural network-based segmentation of the small bowel for visualization and quantitative assessment of pediatric Crohn's disease from MRI.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced MRI of the small bowel is an effective imaging sequence for the detection and characterization of disease burden in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD). However, visualization and quantification of disease burden requires scrolling back and forth through 3D images to follow the anatomy of the bowel, and it can be difficult to fully appreciate the extent of disease. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a method that offers better visualization and quantitative assessment of CD from MRI. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Twenty-three pediatric patients with CD. Intraoperative carbon nanoparticles mapping in secondary total thyroidectomy for recurrent thyroid nodules: Results of a 8-criterion case-match study (case control study).

BACKGROUND: The extent of total thyroidectomy in the management of multinodular goiter remains unclear. Compared to primary thyroidectomy, secondary total thyroidectomy is more difficult to perform and carries a significantly higher risk of postoperative complications such as recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy or hypoparathyroidism. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intraoperative carbon nanoparticle (CN) mapping in patients undergoing secondary total thyroidectomy. METHODS: We performed a case-matched analysis of a prospectively maintained database using 8 spe
