Metastatic Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Liver Successfully Treated With Partial Hepatectomy and Adjuvant Irinotecan Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The management of distant metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) relies mainly on chemotherapies and radiotherapy. Management of patients with cSCC with surgically resectable distant metastatic lesions is not clear. CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old male had 4×10 cm-sized cSCC on the perianal skin with inguinal lymph node metastasis. Surgical resection was performed followed by radiation and adjuvant carboplatin and farmorubicin combination therapy. Six months later, 25 mm-sized solitary metastatic nodule arose on the liver. Base on his favorable overall condition fulfilling

Predictive value of CD8/FOXP3 ratio combined with PD-L1 expression for radiosensitivity in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx receiving definitive radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about immune-related radiosensitivity in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (SCC-L) treated with radiation therapy (RT). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 91 patients with SCC-L treated with RT or chemoradiation therapy and performed immunohistochemical examination to analyze PD-L1 level on tumor cells, CD4+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), CD8+ TIL, and FOXP3+ TIL using pretreated biopsy specimens. The association between these immune-related parameters and radiosensitivity was evaluated. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses showed that high C

A Rare Case of Locally Advanced Primary Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Adrenal Gland.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) of the adrenal gland is extremely rare with limited reports in the literature. There remain no definitive treatment guidelines, largely due to the rarity of the malignancy. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 62-year-old Caucasian male who presented with low back pain and was found to have a large retroperitoneal mass arising from the left adrenal gland, measuring 18.3 × 12.2 centimeters (cm). Biopsy was consistent with small cell carcinoma/high grade neuroendocrine carcinoma. Staging workup including CT chest and bone scan

Changes in treatment trends in the early glottic cancer population after the Affordable Care Act.

BACKGROUND: The clinical impact of Medicaid expansion in otolaryngology is uncertain. Herein, we evaluate the impact of Medicaid expansion on treatment patterns (primary radiotherapy vs surgery) in the early glottic cancer population. METHODS: Data regarding adults with Tis-T2N0M0 glottic cancer that were treated with either surgery or radiotherapy between January 2010 and December 2016 were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer database. Changes in treatment trends and survival in the Medicaid expansion setting were discerned. RESULTS: The proportion of

Modified technique of submandibular gland transfer followed by intensity modulated radiotherapy to reduce xerostomia in head and neck cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is one of the most common long-term adverse effects of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer patients. Contralateral submandibular gland transfer (SMG-T) before radiotherapy was shown to reduce xerostomia compared to pilocarpine. We sought to evaluate a modification of this surgery preserving the ipsilateral facial artery and vein to simplify the SMG-T. METHODS: Eighteen patients planned for head and neck intensity modulated radiotherapy to both necks were reviewed. Surgical complications were recorded. The grade of xerostomia was assessed after treatment completion. R

The mTOR Signaling Pathway Is Associated With the Prognosis of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma After Multimodality Therapy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: We performed multimodality therapy comprising preoperative chemotherapy, extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP), and radiation therapy for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Although multimodality therapy resulted in good prognosis, further improvement is required. Therefore, herein, we analysed the prognostic factors using surgical specimens and searched for suitable molecular targets to improve the prognosis after multidisciplinary treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients with MPM underwent multimodality therapy. Paraffin-embedded surgical samples were

Three-dimensional augmented reality surgical navigation with hybrid optical and electromagnetic tracking for distal intramedullary nail interlocking.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary nail (IMN) fixation improves functional outcomes for the diaphyseal fractures of long bones. However, locking the distal holes of the IMN is challenging. Although several navigation methods have been proposed, an intuitive, radiation-free and accurate navigation method that does not suffer from problems of hand-eye coordination has not yet been described. METHODS: This paper proposes an augmented reality (AR) surgical navigation method with hybrid optical and electromagnetic (EM) tracking for distal IMN interlocking. Model experiments are designed to evaluate the AR
