University of Wyoming, College of Engineering, undergraduate design project: star tracer.

The University of Wyoming received funding in the spring of 2002 from the National Science Foundation Division of Bioengineering and Environmental Systems in order to complete undergraduate design projects. One design project that was chosen by the College of Engineering involved partnering with the College of Education. The College of Education's Special Education Department needed some visual teaching aids to be redesigned and then built. Two undergraduate students were hired throughout the summer of 2002 under NSF REU funding in order to develop thirty new teaching devices. These devices we

Build Your Research Community: Evaluation of an Online Course to Build Strong Mentoring Relationships and Networks.

Build Your Research Community (BYRC) is an asynchronous, free online course that guides research students to build effective relationships with their primary research advisors as well as build mentoring networks that provide holistic support as they navigate their research training experiences and careers. Preliminary evaluation evidence of the effectiveness of BYRC was collected from undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, and graduate students in 22 biomedical research training programs, as well as students who enrolled in the course independently from across the country. Students valued the cours…

Organoid application in virology research: Recent progress and emerging directions.

Organoids, as in vitro three-dimensional structures derived from stem cell differentiation, have emerged as cutting-edge technologies in biomedical research due to their effectiveness in mimicking the complex architectures and physiological functions of human organs. Currently, researchers worldwide are extensively exploring the application of organoids in virology and have achieved remarkable progress. These innovations have enabled the successful cultivation of various viruses in vitro, the modeling of viral infection processes, and the clarification of cell tropism and host factor interacti…

Do we still need animals? Surveying the role of animal-free models in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease research.

The use of animals in neuroscience and biomedical research remains controversial. Policy is built around the "3R" principle of "Refining, Reducing and Replacing" animal experiments, and across the globe, different initiatives stimulate the use of animal-free methods. Based on an extensive literature screen to map the development and adoption of animal-free methods in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease research, we find that at least two in three examined studies rely on animals or on animal-derived models. Among the animal-free studies, the relative contribution of innovative models that may …

Social behavior of zebrafish: from synthetic images to biological mechanisms of shoaling.

The zebrafish strikes a good balance between system complexity and practical simplicity and as a result it is becoming increasingly frequently utilized in biomedical research as a translational tool. Numerous human brain disorders are associated with abnormal social behavior and the zebrafish has been suggested for modeling such disorders. To start this line of research, however, one may need to first thoroughly examine the laboratory organism, zebrafish, and its features, social behavior in this case. Proper methods need be developed to induce and quantify social behavior. These paradigms may…

Prevalence of viral, bacterial and parasitological diseases in rats and mice used in research environments in Australasia over a 5-y period.

Viral, bacterial and parasitological infections in rats and mice used in biomedical research continue to occur despite improved housing and biosurveillance. The presence of disease in laboratory animals can lead to spurious results for research undertaken in universities, research institutes and the pharmaceutical industry. Here the authors report the results of serological, microbiological, parasitological and molecular tests done on mice and rats from Australasia submitted to a rodent health monitoring laboratory (Cerberus Sciences) from 2004 to 2009. In tested mice, norovirus was the most p…

Retinoic acid signaling in growth plate development: receptor-specific effects, antagonist evidence, and pediatric translational considerations.

The growth plate is a spatially organized cartilage structure that drives longitudinal bone growth and is particularly vulnerable to nutritional imbalance, systemic disease, trauma, and drug exposure during childhood. Retinoic acid (RA), the bioactive metabolite of vitamin A, regulates transcription through retinoic acid receptors (RARα, RARβ, and RARγ). Its skeletal effects depend on concentration, developmental timing, tissue context, and receptor subtype. Physiologic RA homeostasis contributes to orderly chondrocyte maturation, whereas excessive or spatially inappropriate signaling can supp

[Advances in Cardiac Sympathetic PET Imaging: Development and Clinical Translation of 18F-fluproxadine (18F-AF78)].

The cardiac sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in the pathophysiology and prognosis of heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and arrhythmias. Cardiac sympathetic innervation has traditionally been assessed using 123I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (123I-MIBG) SPECT and 11C-hydroxyephedrine (11C-HED) PET. However, these approaches have limitations related to spatial resolution, quantitative capability, physical half-life, and dependence on specialized facilities. 18F-fluproxadine, formerly known as 18F-AF78, is a novel PET tracer targeting the norepinephrine transporter (NET) at symp
