Eight patients with aplastic anaemia associated with dyskeratosis congenita received allogeneic marrow grafts from either HLA-identical siblings (six patients) or HLA-matched unrelated donors (two patients). In a prospective study 40 consecutive patients with open tibial fractures were treated by the Hoffmann external fixator; the follow-up period was 18 months. All fractures were irrigated, debrided, and fixed rigidly with the Vidal-Adrey modification of the Hoffmann device as soon as the patients' condition allowed. This is a retrospective study of retrograde intramedullary rodding for ankle arthrodesis in 19 ankles in 16 patients. The preoperative diagnosis of 16 patients was diabetic neuropathic arthropathy in seven patients, rheumatoid arthritis in three patients, post traumatic arthrosis in three patients, paraplegia with fixed equinovarus of the foot in two patients, and avascular necrosis of the talus in one patient. PURPOSE: To describe surgical outcomes of a series of patients with bony mallet fingers treated by a modified extension blocking technique with external fixation.
METHODS: We developed an external fixator that was attached to the extension block pin. Dorsal rotation of the dorsal fragment during reduction was prevented with 1 or 2 additional pins abutted on the fragment through the fixator. We examined a novel mouse model of wear debris-induced prosthesis instability and osteolysis, and its application for the evaluation of therapy. We aimed to compare in vivo the stability of fixation of condylar fractures in sheep using sonic bone welding and standard titanium screws. We assessed stability of the osteosynthesis and maintenance of the height of the mandibular ramus. Height decreased slightly in both groups compared with the opposite side. The volume of the condyle increased considerably in both groups mainly because callus had formed. The results showed no significant disadvantages for pin fixation compared with osteosynthesis using titanium screws.

Intra-articular distal humerus fractures can be among the most challenging injuries treated by orthopedic surgeons. The goals of surgical treatment are anatomical restoration of the articular surface and stable fixation of the fracture fragments to allow for early motion. However, the bone stock of the distal humerus is limited, and stable fixation may be difficult to achieve in the case of a low fracture pattern, comminution, or osteoporosis. In this article, we provide practical recommendations for surgical management of these complex fractures.
