The opsono-adherence assay is a functional assay that enumerates the attachment of bacterial pathogens to professional phagocytes. Because adherence is requisite to phagocytosis and killing, the assay is an alternative method to opsono-phagocytic killing assays. BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis is a common cause of stiff shoulder and may result in pain and restriction of movement. The study aimed to investigate the role of hydrodilatation of the glenohumeral joint in the management of adhesive capsulitis.
METHODS: Patients referred from the shoulder clinic underwent hydrodilatation under ultrasound guidance. Burkholderia pseudomallei has been shown to produce more than one capsular polysaccharide (CPS). Analysis of the B. pseudomallei genome has revealed that the organism contains four CPS operons (I-IV). One of these operons (CPS III) was selected for further study. This is the first report of a Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii strain (serotype B) that switches reversibly between its parent mucoid (NP1-MC) colony morphology and a smooth (NP1-SM) colony morphology. Pneumococcal meningitis in St. Petersburg in the period 1985-1991 occurred in 1.7-2.3 children per 100,000 annually. The most common serotypes among pneumococcal strains isolated from patients with meningitis were 19, 1, 6, 15, and 2, whereas, among the capsulated strains isolated from carriers, type 3 predominated.
