CONTEXT: Although the liver is the primary target organ in acetaminophen (APAP) toxicity, other organs are affected. Previous data suggested that chronic APAP abuse can be ototoxic and the mechanism involves APAP-induced oxidative stress and reactive metabolite (N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine, NAPQI)-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress. However, the effect of a single acute overdose on hearing has not been tested.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines have sparked hot debate regarding the role of carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA-125) for ovarian cancer (OC) detection. Recent literature and evidence calls into question the use of CA-125 in diagnostic algorithms, given the better performance of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) vs. CA-125 to rule OC. This is an important consideration since combined measurements are not cost-effective. The quality of this evidence is, however, threatened by important gaps related to study design, enrolled populations and analytical issues.

Neurotoxic effects associated with long term low level occupational exposure to CS2 were reinvestigated four years after the initial study in the same group of workers. The second study concerned 44 exposed and 31 matched control workers. For both studies a personal cumulative exposure Ec was calculated based on function specific exposure levels and the occupational histories, which were carefully re-established. Membrane-associated thioredoxin reductase (TR) activity has been measured in 3-mm punch biopsy specimens from psoriatic and uninvolved skin in eight patients with chronic plaque-type psoriasis vulgaris. Sea turtle prolactin (PRL) was isolated in a highly purified state from sea turtle pituitary side fractions obtained from other studies and some of its biological, chemical, and immunological properties were determined. Sea turtle PRL is a protein of 22-24 kDa [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis]. Its sole amino terminal amino acid residue is leucine.
