Amygdala functions within the alimentary system.

The amygdaloid complex plays an important role in various defensive, sexual and metabolic functions of the organism. Our previous experiments on the defensive functions demonstrated that the amygdala may be divided into dorsomedial excitatory and basolateral inhibitory parts. Our recent experiments showed that this division is true also for alimentary mechanisms. The dorsomedial part of the amygdala acts as a facilitatory "center" and the lateral part as an inhibitory alimentary "center". These functions of the amygdala are parallel to those of the hypothalamic feeding centers. Bilateral damag

Sudden infant death syndrome: hypothesis of causation.

The airway of the young infant is anatomically vulnerable at the oropharyngeal level between the soft palate and the base of the skull. Airway occlusion at this level might occur during the muscle relaxation which occurs during REM sleep, facilitated by a hypermobile mandible, by the hypotonia of infection, perhaps by an enlarged tongue with a strong backwards sucking action which might be the result of the artificial feeding of the infant. It is possible that "cot deaths" (SIDS) may be precipitated by such oropharyngeal airway occlusion, cardiac arrest following variable periods of partial or

Does health worker performance affect clients' health behaviors? A multilevel analysis from Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal healthcare quality may be a barrier to achieving child health improvements, yet little is known about the relationship between provider compliance with evidence-based practices and client behavior change. We assess provider compliance in the context of infant and young child feeding (IYCF) counseling, its relationship with client IYCF behaviors in Bangladesh, and explore its potential determinants. METHODS: We use data from a 2017 evaluation of an IYCF program that includes a health worker survey (n = 74), caregiver survey (n = 232), and direct service observation check

The liver as a metabolic and immune hub in Alzheimer's disease: From mechanisms to therapeutic opportunities.

Research on Alzheimer's disease (AD) has traditionally focused on the brain. However, emerging evidence indicates that the liver acts as a silent partner in neurodegeneration. As a core hub for metabolic and immune regulation, the liver communicates bidirectionally with the brain via the liver-brain axis, participating in the regulation of various neurophysiological processes, including neurotransmitter regulation, feeding behavior, and cognition. This review summarizes how liver-derived hepatokines, inflammatory mediators, and metabolic products modulate brain function. We highlight that live…

Neurotransmitter Alterations in Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Narrative Review.

Prediabetes and early type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) are increasingly recognized as states of both metabolic and neurochemical dysregulation … ancreatic islets. These changes affect metabolic control and are implicated in mood, cognition, and feeding behavior. We investigate the mechanistic links between neurotransmitter dysfunction and glucose metabolism, including the roles of brain insulin resistance, inflammation, mitochondrial stress, and gut-brain axis signaling. Finally, we discuss therapeutic str …

Selenium Protects Mouse Hypothalamic Cells from Glucocorticoid-Induced Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Vulnerability and Insulin Signaling Impairment.

The use of glucocorticoid medications is known to cause metabolic side effects such as overeating, excess weight gain, and insulin resistance. The hypothalamus, a central regulator of feeding behavior and energy expenditure, is highly responsive to glucocorticoids, and it has been proposed that it plays a role in glucocorticoid-induced metabolic defects. Glucocorticoids can alter the expression and activity of antioxidant enzymes and promote the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Recent evidence indicates that selenium can counter the effects of glucocorticoids, and selenium is critical …

Elucidating the central anorexigenic mechanism of glucagon-like peptide 1 in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) elicits a potent reduction in food intake, although the central mechanism mediating this appetite-suppressive effect is not fully understood in all species. To begin to elucidate the molecular mechanisms in quail, we administered GLP-1 via intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection to 7-day-old Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and determined effects on food and water intake, behavior, and brain nucleus activation. We observed a reduction in food and water intake, with the lowest effective dose being 0.01 nmol. Quail injected with GLP-1 displayed fewer steps, feed

Xenoestrogens impact brain estrogen receptor signaling during the female lifespan: A precursor to neurological disease?

Xenoestrogens, foreign synthetic chemicals mimicking estrogens, are lurking in our surroundings. Climate change may alter their toxicity and bioavailability. Since xenoestrogens have extremely high lipid solubility and are structurally similar to natural endogenous estrogens, they can bind to estrogen receptors (ERs) -alpha (ER-α) and -beta (ER-β). Scientific evidence accumulated over the past decades have suggested that natural 17β-estradiol (E2; a potent estrogen), via activation of its receptors, plays a pivotal role in regulation of brain development, differentiation, metabolism, synaptic

Histological and Behavioral Toxicity of Tributyltin in the Tropical Guppy Poecilia vivipara.

The tropical estuarine guppy Poecilia vivipara was used to address fish early life stage toxicity caused by the antifouling contaminant tributyltin. Six-day-old P. vivipara were exposed for 7 d to control water and waterborne tributyltin at 15.8, 83.8, 716, and 818 ng tin (Sn) L-1 . After exposure, swimming, feeding, growth, and eye histological endpoints were evaluated. Histopathological analysis of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) indicated alterations in pigment positioning at all tributyltin concentrations. A dose-dependent increase in photoreceptor layer disorganization and iris melan

Photoperiodic responses of depression-like behavior, the brain serotonergic system, and peripheral metabolism in laboratory mice.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is characterized by depression during specific seasons, generally winter. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying SAD remain elusive due to a limited number of animal models with high availability and validity. Here we show that laboratory C57BL/6J mice display photoperiodic changes in depression-like behavior and brain serotonin content. C57BL/6J mice maintained under short-day conditions, as compared to those under long-day conditions, demonstrated prolonged immobility times in the forced swimming test with lower brain levels of serotonin and its precur

Enhanced ghrelin secretion in the cephalic phase of food ingestion in women with bulimia nervosa.

In humans, the cephalic phase response to food ingestion consists mostly of vagal efferent activation, which promotes the secretion of entero-pancreatic hormones, including ghrelin. Since symptomatic patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) are characterized by increased vagal tone, we hypothesized an enhanced ghrelin secretion in the cephalic phase of vagal stimulation. Therefore, we investigated ghrelin response to modified sham feeding (MSF) in both BN and healthy women. Six drug-free BN women and 7 age-matched healthy females underwent MSF with initially seeing and smelling a meal, and then chew

Nesfatin-1 evokes Ca2+ signaling in isolated vagal afferent neurons via Ca2+ influx through N-type channels.

Nesfatin-1, processed from nucleobindin 2, is an anorexigenic peptide expressed in the brain and several peripheral tissues including the stomach and pancreas. Peripheral, as well as intracerebroventricular, administration of nesfatin-1 suppresses feeding behavior, though underlying mechanisms are unknown. In this study, we examined effects of nesfatin-1 on cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) in the neurons isolated from the vagal afferent nodose ganglion of mice. Nesfatin-1 at 10(-10)-10(-8)M increased [Ca(2+)](i) in the isolated neurons in a concentration-dependent manner, and at 10…

Effects in the rat of intranigral morphine and DAGO on eating and gnawing induced by stress.

Stress produced by pinching the tail is known to increase feeding behavior in rats, and endogenous opioids have been implicated in the mediation of this effect. We have reported previously that a nonspecific opioid antagonist and a mu-selective antagonist decrease this stress-induced eating (SIE) when they are microinjected into the substantia nigra (SN). The present study investigated the possibility that activation of opioid receptors in the SN might also alter SIE. Because oral stereotypy and nociception are affected by opioid mechanisms in the SN, measurements of gnawing and of tail flick …

Plasma tryptophan and anorexia in human cancer.

A correlation between anorexia and brain levels of serotonin and tryptophan (TRP) has been reported in tumor-bearing animals. In the present investigation 45 patients with various types of cancer and 13 control subjects were studied. Prior to the study the patients had received no antineoplastic therapy and were unaware of the malignancy of their disease. Feeding behavior was investigated by means of a questionnaire in which the presence of anorexia (A), aversion to meat (MA), taste (TA) or smell (SA) alterations, nausea and/or vomiting (NV) and early satiety (ES) was assessed. Plasma levels o…

Enhancing effect of barbital on N-2-fluorenylacetamide-induced rat liver lesions.

The enhancing effect of phenobarbital (PB) and barbital on hepatotumorigenesis were compared by quantitative analysis of the behavior of altered foci following discontinuation of N-2-fluorenylacetamide (FAA) administration. Thirty-four male ACI rats, 2 months old, were fed 0.02% FAA diet for 13 weeks and some of them were sacrificed immediately. The remaining rats were divided into three groups and given a basal diet (group I) or 0.05% PB diet (group II) or 0.05% barbital diet (group III) and sacrificed sequentially at 8 and 16 weeks after the beginning of administration of each diet. Septal destruction in infant rats and the ontogeny of drinking behaviors.

Male and female albino rat pups sustained septal destruction at 10 days of age and body weight and water intakes were measured daily throughout development until 200 days of age. During development the septal and control rats received a battery of drinking tests (e.g., cellular dehydration, hypovolemia, renin). Septal rats (males and females) were hyperdipsic for daily water intakes as early as 31 days of age and the daily hyperdipsia persisted through 200 days of age. On the battery of drinking tests, septal rats consumed water at control volumes on all tests except water deprivation (followi

Dynamic Liquid-like Membrane Gates Mass Transport in Inorganic Nanocells.

Interactive "visualization-manipulation" of membrane-regulated behavior with high spatiotemporal resolution remains challenging. Here, we in situ design and visualize inorganic nanocells from an exciting cinnabar semiconductor while simultaneously forming liquid-like membranes and Hg nanodroplets. A full picture of such membranes from birth to disappearance, including membrane-associated gating of mass transport either in a single nanocell or across multiple nanocells, is revealed at the atomic scale. Periodic reversible cross-feeding occurs among nanodroplets confined in a single nanocell, pr
