OBJECTIVE: To investigate the operative indication and clinical efficacy of combination of external fixator and volar approach fixation in treating distal radius fracture.
METHODS: From March 2000 to March 2005, 28 patients with distal radius fracture were treated with combination of external fixator and volar approach fixation. Dorsal external fixator was used to maintain wrist in functional position, combinated volar plate or Kirschner wire fixation after reduction was achieved. Bone graft was necessary if there were severe comminuted cortical bone or compress of cancellous bone. Of 28 pati

AIM: The treatment of post-traumatic elbow stiffness has seen many important changes over the years, particularly through the development of arthroscopy, greater knowledge of anatomy and improvements in operative techniques, that reduce the incidence of complications and facilitate postoperative recovery. In this study mid-term clinical results of arthroscopy for post-traumatic elbow stiffness are evaluated in 15 sporting patients, with an average age of 32 years.
METHODS: Eight patients reported post-traumatic stiffness due to fracture of the radial head, 3 to fracture-dislocation, 1 to frac

BACKGROUND Periprosthetic femoral fractures and complications after joint replacement pose serious therapeutic challenges, especially in older patients with multiple comorbidities. In cases where conventional stabilization and revision procedures fail, implantation of a total femoral replacement (TFR) prosthesis may provide a limb-salvage option. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 77-year-old woman with multiple comorbidities who underwent repeated treatment for fractures and complications involving the left femur over a 20-year period. Due to poor bone quality resulting from multiple previo

A die punch fracture is an intra-articular fracture of the distal radius characterized by a localized depression of the articular surface, typically occurring in the lunate fossa. Misdiagnosis or incorrect management can lead to articular malunion. While die punch fractures in the scaphoid fossa are less common, their nascent malunions pose significant treatment challenges. Traditionally, these fractures are treated with an open dorsal and volar approach, combined with osteotomy and internal fixation. Arthroscopic-assisted osteotomy has emerged as a promising technique due to its precision and

PURPOSE: Treatment for an unstable intertrochanteric fracture in elderly patients is challenging. Bipolar hemiarthroplasty (HA) using microarc oxidation (MAO) coating has been a treatment option alternative to internal fixation. However, the outcome of bipolar HA using MAO-coated stem in these patients is unknown.
METHODS: From July 2007 to April 2016, 234 (older than 65 years) patients (234 hips) who were diagnosed as having unstable intertrochanteric fractures were treated with bipolar HA using a fully MAO-coated standard-length rectangular cementless stem. During the arthroplasty, the grea

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present study was to assess our management of infected total hip replacement in indications for 2-stage surgical treatment according to current guidelines when a cement spacer has been used. The study hypothesis was that the complications rate related to cement spacers is low.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A single-center retrospective study included 26 patients receiving a spacer between the two stages of total hip replacement, over a 5 year period. We analyzed the spacers used, mechanical complications, infectious complications and the second stage of surgery.

BACKGROUND: Metallic wires and cables are commonly used in primary and revision THA for fixation of periprosthetic fractures and osteotomies of the greater trochanter. These systems provide secure fixation and high healing rates but fraying, third-body generation, accelerated wear of the bearing surface, and injury to the surgical team remain concerning.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We determined the rate of cable failure, union, and complications associated with a novel, nonmetallic cerclage cable in periprosthetic fracture and osteotomy fixation during THA.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 29 p

From 1980 to the end of 1988, arthroscopy has been performed on 620 patients with acute hemarthrosis of the knee joint. Of all the intraarticular lesions, 89.4% required surgery. Arthroscopy has changed in the last decade from diagnostic screening to invasive instrumentation for exact operative planing and alternative operative techniques. Hemarthrosis in stable knee joints was caused by minor lesions (7.84%) that did not require surgical procedures. Seventy-three patients had traumatic patellar dislocations--in 33 cases associated with chondral or osteochondral fractures. In 54.8% of the isol

Good outcomes following treatment of pelvic ring injuries, acetabular fractures, and femur fractures rely on restoration of native pelvic or limb alignment, anatomical reduction and rigid stability of articular fractures, and early postoperative mobilization. Multiple surgical approaches, reduction aids, and orthopaedic implants are available to stabilize these fractures. Despite best practices, complications including hardware failure, nonunions, malunions, and infections occur. This article discusses common fracture classification systems, implants, and imaging findings associated with unwan

Fractures of the upper limbs are frequent and often need operative treatment in addition to a well-indicated conservative management. This depends on the maturity of the nearest growth plate and the local remodeling potential, which is dependent on age. Following conventional x‑ray imaging an individual prognostic growth analysis leads to the therapeutic decision. Around the elbow and the shaft of the forearm, criteria are stricter than near the shoulder or wrist. Gilchrist or Desault bandages as well as braces are adequate for most subcapital and humeral shaft fractures. The short forearm cas

Simultaneous Monteggia injuries of the elbow and ipsilateral fracture distal radius with epiphyseal injury both bone are a unique case. A unique case of a Type I Monteggia fracture equivalent with ipsilateral fracture distal radius with epiphyseal injury (Salter-Harris Type II) in a child is reported. We describe the management of this unique fracture and discuss the possible mechanism of injury. We have highlighted a rare combination of injuries. Early recognition and prompt surgical intervention can lead to a satisfactory outcome even in these complex injuries. Résumé Les traumatismes de Mon

There is uniform agreement in the literature that radial neck fracture with <30 degrees of angulation and minimal translation in younger children can be managed by casting alone, without the need for closed reduction. For more severe fractures, closed manipulation techniques followed by percutaneous reduction technique (in case closed reduction fails) should be performed before switching to an open reduction technique. Debate still exists regarding the best treatment protocol for severely displaced fractures. Although some surgeons favor open reduction with the argument that repeat manipulatio

Acute traumatic shoulder injuries are often associated with severe pain that hinders examination, radiographic positioning, and timely orthopaedic management. Conventional systemic analgesia may be inadequate, while interscalene and superior trunk blocks can be limited by hemidiaphragmatic paresis. The ultrasound-guided infraspinatus teres minor (ITM) inter-fascial plane block is a recently described diaphragm-sparing technique that targets the suprascapular and axillary nerves through a single posterior injection and has shown promising anatomic and postoperative analgesic coverage in earlier

RATIONALE: Death following orthopedic surgery has become rare, but does occur. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) can be a cause of such death, but diagnosis of AMI is often challenging, even by autopsy.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We have recently experienced 2 cases of sudden death after bone fracture surgery, in which AMI and pulmonary thromboembolism were clinically suspected as causes of death. Case 1 was a 60-year-old male with a history of diabetes mellitus who died 7 days after surgery for Lisfranc dislocation fracture. Case 2 was a 75-year-old female who died several hours after surgery for pro
