Iron supplementation in preterm and low-birth-weight infants: a systematic review of intervention studies.

CONTEXT: Enteral iron supplementation in preterm infants is recommended to supply sufficient iron for growth and development without increasing the risk of iron overload. However, the current recommendations date from 2010 and are based on limited evidence. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to investigate the effects of enteral iron supplementation on iron status, growth, neurological development, and adverse clinical outcomes in preterm (<37 weeks' gestation) and low-birth-weight (LBW, <2500 g) infants. DATA SOURCES: The PubMed/Medline and Cochrane Library databases were searched to 3

Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) fortified functional foods ameliorate iron and protein malnutrition by improving growth and modulating oxidative stress and gut microbiota in rats.

The present study was aimed at developing Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) fortified traditional foods of the Indian subcontinent, namely sattu (multigrain beverage mix) and chikki (peanut bar) and evaluating their ability to promote recovery from protein and iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) using albino Wistar rats. Addition of Spirulina (at 4% w/w Spirulina inclusion levels) enriched the protein content by 20.33% in sattu and 15.65% in chikki while the iron content was enhanced by 45% in sattu and 29.6% in chikki. In addition, the total carotenoid and polyphenol content and antioxidant capacit

Neurological development and iron supplementation in healthy late-preterm neonates: a randomized double-blind controlled trial.

Late-preterm infants (LPT) are at increased risk for long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae and iron deficiency. The aim of the study is to assess the positive effect of iron supplementation on psychomotor development in healthy LPT. We designed a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind trial dividing the newborns into two groups. Every patient was assessed using the Griffiths Mental Development Scales (GMDS)-II edition at 12-month post-conceptional age. The study was performed at the Neonatology Unit of our Hospital, in Italy. Sixty-six healthy LPT infants born between 340⁄7 and 366⁄7 weeks

Discovering the hidden link: hematological disorders caused by copper deficiency.

Copper deficiency can lead to anemia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia, often mimicking vitamin B12 deficiency or myelodysplastic syndrome. We review the crucial role of copper in iron metabolism and hematopoiesis, highlighting how high-dose zinc supplementation, gastrointestinal surgeries, and long-term nutritional support can induce deficiency. The pathophysiology involves compromised ferroxidase activity, which hampers iron utilization, and reduced neutrophil survival due to impairment of cytochrome c oxidase and superoxide dismutase. Timely recognition is vital, as most cases respond to cop

[Drug-induced osteomalacia].

In our country, calcium- or phosphate-deficient rickets/osteomalacia due to malnutrition are scarcely reported. However, osteomalacia induced by drugs, such as anti-epileptics, etidronate and saccharated ferric oxide (SFO) is occasionally reported. When SFO is repeatedly injected to patients with iron-deficient anemia for a prolonged period, a tiny amount of SFO is excreted into renal tubules, where it exerts toxic effects on renal phosphate reabsorption and 1alpha-hydroxylase activity, leading to hypophosphatemic osteomalacia. Furthermore, Fe accumulates on the calcification front, resulting

Vegetarian diets and children.

Although the general health and development of vegan and vegetarian children seem to be normal, there may be subtle differences compared with omnivores. They are at increased risk of iron deficiency, and impaired psychomotor development associated with iron deficiency has been reported in macrobiotic infants. Fortunately, this impairment is not permanent, and follow-up studies have reported higher-than-average intelligence quotients among older macrobiotic children. Several other hazards of vegetarian diets have been identified, including vitamin B12 deficiency, rickets, and a bulky diet that

The Prevalence of Anemia and Diagnostic Usefulness of Ferritin and Hepcidin in Antiphospholipid Syndrome and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is common among patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). It can persist alone (primary APS-pAPS) or with another associated disease (secondary APS-sAPS), predominantly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). There are no systematic reviews addressing the type of anemia (iron deficiency without anemia-IDWA, iron deficiency-IDA, and anemia of chronic disease-ACD) in these patients. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the type of anemia and to compare the usefulness of common diagnostic anemia parameters and their mutual relations. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involv

Defects in the rice aconitase-encoding OsACO1 gene alter iron homeostasis.

Rice aconitase gene OsACO1 is involved in the iron deficiency-signaling pathway for the expression of iron deficiency-inducible genes, either thorough enzyme activity or possible specific RNA binding for post-transcriptional regulation. Iron (Fe) is an essential element for virtually all living organisms. When plants are deficient in Fe, Fe acquisition systems are activated to maintain Fe homeostasis, and this regulation is mainly executed at the gene transcription level. Many molecules responsible for Fe uptake, translocation, and storage in plants have been identified and characterized. Howe

Transcriptome Analysis Reveals IsiA-Regulatory Mechanisms Underlying Iron Depletion and Oxidative-Stress Acclimation in Synechocystis sp. Strain PCC 6803.

Microorganisms in nature are commonly exposed to various stresses in parallel. The isiA gene encodes an iron stress-induced chlorophyll-binding protein which is significantly induced under iron starvation and oxidative stress. Acclimation of oxidative stress and iron deficiency was investigated using a regulatory mutant of the Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803. In this study, the ΔisiA mutant grew more slowly in oxidative-stress and iron depletion conditions compared to the wild-type (WT) counterpart under the same conditions. Thus, we performed transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis of t

Enhanced frataxin expression in Arabidopsis thaliana modulates iron metabolism and improves growth under iron stress.

Frataxin plays a crucial role in iron homeostasis, Fe-S cluster, and heme biogenesis. This study investigated the impact of constitutive AtFH overexpression in Arabidopsis thaliana. The results demonstrated significant alterations in Fe-S protein activity, iron distribution, and the expression of genes associated with iron transport, Fe-S cluster assembly, and iron storage. Notably, AtFH-overexpressing plants displayed enhanced growth, with increased rosette area and improved root development, under both iron-deficient and iron-excess conditions. While these findings provide valuable insights

[Research Progress of Iron Metabolism in Disease Progression and Drug Resistance of Multiple Myeloma--Review].

Iron metabolism is involved in the development and drug resistance of many malignancies, including multiple myeloma (MM). Based on recent studies on iron metabolism and MM, this paper reviews the relationship between iron metabolism and disease process of MM in terms of iron overload leading to ferroptosis in MM cells, the role of iron deficiency in oxidative respiration and proliferation of MM cells, and the interaction between ferroptosis and autophagy in the disease process. The mechanisms by which iron metabolism-related substances lead to MM cells' resistance to proteasome inhibitors (PI)

Riboflavin intake and status and relationship to anemia.

Riboflavin in its coenzyme forms, flavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide, is essential for multiple redox reactions necessary for energy production, antioxidant protection, and metabolism of other B vitamins, such as niacin, pyridoxine, and folate. Erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity coefficient (EGRac) is a biomarker of riboflavin status; ratios ≥1.40 are commonly interpreted as indicating biochemical deficiency. Most research on riboflavin status comes from low-income countries and rural settings, which reported high rates of riboflavin deficiency and inadequate intake.

Food-borne origins of Escherichia coli causing extraintestinal infections.

Most human extraintestinal Escherichia coli infections, including those involving antimicrobial resistant strains, are caused by the members of a limited number of distinctive E. coli lineages, termed extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), that have a special ability to cause disease at extraintestinal sites when they exit their usual reservoir in the host's intestinal tract. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that many of the ExPEC strains encountered in humans with urinary tract infection, sepsis, and other extraintestinal infections, especially the most extensively antimicrobial-resist

The effects of nutrients on mood.

A recent major theory was that a meal high in carbohydrate increased the rate that tryptophan enters the brain, leading to an increase in the level of the neurotransmitter serotonin that modulates mood. Although such a mechanism may be important under laboratory conditions it is unlikely to be of significance following the eating of any typical meal. As little as 2-4% of the calories of a meal as protein will prevent an increased availability of tryptophan. Arguably the food with the greatest impact on mood is chocolate. Those who crave chocolate tend to do so when they feel emotionally low. T
