The use of stepwise isothermal high sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (HSDSC) as a novel means of detecting excipient incompatibility is described using aspirin mixes with magnesium stearate and stearic acid as model systems. BACKGROUND: Neurological deterioration in eclampsia is considered to be secondary to cerebral vasospasm. Magnesium sulfate therapy improves symptoms and controls seizures, possibly related to its vasorelaxive effects in spastic arteries. Some cases, however, are refractory to magnesium therapy. INTRODUCTION: Women with pre-eclampsia (PE) have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) later in life. This association might reflect an effect of pre-eclampsia on mechanisms inducing a higher risk of CVD or the presence of a group at risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The possibility that women with a magnesium deficiency might constitute a risk group was examined using published evidence form investigations on PE and CVD.

Summary A 7-week-old infant with respiratory syncytial virus infection abruptly developed complex cardiac arrhythmias in association with a low serum magnesium level.
