This lecture first pinpoints the "tertiary" function of foods which, as opposed to the conventional "primary" and "secondary" functions that are related to nutrition and preference, respectively, is understood to be directly involved in the modulation of our physiological systems such as the immune, endocrine, nervous, circulatory, and digestive systems Insights into this newly defined function are particularly important in that the intake of physiologically functional food factors could be effective in preventing diseases that may be caused by disorders in these systems. Technologically, it h

From 1970 to 1987, 23 neonates with gastroschisis were treated at Kobe Children's Hospital. One patient died and 22 survived (96%). Seven patients were hypothermic upon arrival at the hospital, with body temperatures of 31.8 to 35.4 degrees C. Six patients were successfully managed by warm saline bathing (40 to 42 degrees C for one minute) to improve hypothermia. One patient who did not receive this rewarming procedure (body temperature, 31.8 degrees C) died of intractable metabolic disorders related to hypothermia. Ten patients were treated by primary fascial closure of the abdominal wall def

Fat emulsions are used increasingly for parenteral nutrition in premature infants suffering from various disorders, including respiratory insufficiency necessitating artificial ventilation with positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP). Both PEEP and lipid infusions (LI) may alter pulmonary hemodynamics. The simultaneous effect of LI and PEEP were therefore investigated. Five adult anesthetized Göttinger minipigs were infused with a 20% LI at a high rate of 0.4 g/kg/hr for 30 min, followed by PEEP of 8 cm H2O for 15 min. Catheters were inserted into the upper vena cava, the pulmonary artery, the

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is a heterogeneous endocrine and metabolic disorder associated with reproductive dysfunction, hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation and an increased risk of long-term cardiometabolic disease. Lifestyle intervention remains the cornerstone of management; however, the optimal nutritional strategy continues to be debated. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on nutritional management of PMOS, including dietary approaches, the role of the gut microbiota,

BACKGROUND: Excessive intake of added sugars is an important contributor to obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), dental caries, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolism-related disorders in humans. Stevia-derived sweeteners, particularly high-purity steviol glycosides (SGs), have been widely used in reduced-sugar and sugar-free foods because of their high sweetness intensity, low energy contribution, and plant-derived origin. However, their broader application remains limited by bitterness, lingering sweetness, licorice-like or herbal aftertaste, thin mouthfeel, and food-matrix depend

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Gaultheria L. (Ericaceae) berries are edible wild fruits traditionally consumed in several regions of Asia and the Americas and used in folk medicine for the management of fever, pain, inflammation, and digestive disorders. In recent years, they have attracted increasing attention as prospective sources of phytochemicals with potential biological activity and as candidate ingredients for future food applications. This review aimed to critically evaluate the current knowledge on the nutritional value, phytochemical composition, biological activities, and functional food p

Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) functions as a catalyst bacterium in the development of periodontitis, and the serum antibody level against P. gingivalis is considered a surrogate marker for the activity level of periodontopathic microbiota. The chronic systemic inflammation induced by P. gingivalis elevates the risk of various systemic and neurodegenerative disorders, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. Although the connection between human microbiota and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains relatively unexplored, it is noteworthy that AMD shares r

INTRODUCTION: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), a subclinical intestinal disorder, is characterized by chronic fecal-oral exposure to entero-pathogens and could be diagnosed by measuring non-invasive biomarkers. Escherichia coli is the one of the key bacterial enteric pathogens that drives EED, but there is a lack of information on the E. coli pathotypes in relation to the biomarkers of EED in malnourished adults. Here, we intended to measure the possible association of these pathotypes with EED biomarkers and nutritional status of adults residing in a slum in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The number of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) positive patients and fatalities keeps rising. It is important to recognize risk factors for severe outcomes. Evidence linking vitamin D deficiency and the severity of COVID-19 is tangential but substantial - relating to race, obesity, and institutionalization.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the function of vitamin D and nutritional defense against infections such as COVID-19, which is the goal of this research.
METHODS: This study includes observational cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies that estimated varianc

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dysphagia is a prevalent disorder among the older persons. Despite this, signs of dysphagia often go unnoticed in hospital settings. This cross-sectional study aimed at investigating the prevalence of signs of dysphagia among patients aged 65 or older in a Danish acute care setting.
METHODS: We studied 334 patients aged 65 years or older admitted to the acute medical unit (AMU) at Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark. Signs of dysphagia were assessed using bedside screening tools including the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10), a 30 mL Water Swallowing Test (WST) and the Gu

Adolescence is a critical period, because major physical and psychologic changes occur during a very short period of time. Changes in dietary habits may induce different types of nutritional disorders and are likely to track into adulthood. The aim of this review is to describe the key findings related to nutritional status in European adolescents participating in the HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) study. We performed a cross-sectional study in 3528 (1845 females) adolescents aged 12.5–17.5 y. Birth weight was negatively associated with abdominal fat mass in a

Growing evidence indicates that the gut microbiota is not a static ecosystem but a rhythmic metabolic organ whose oscillatory activity is tightly coordinated with host circadian biology. Disruption of this temporal alignment, through irregular diet, sleep disturbance, shift work, or social jet lag, may profoundly alter microbial composition and the production of neuroactive metabolites. These alterations have emerged as potential contributors to the pathophysiology of mood disorders. This review introduces the concept of chrono-metabolic psychiatry, a framework integrating circadian rhythms, g

Background: The interplay between neuronutrition, physical activity, and mental health for enhancing brain resilience to stress and overall human health is widely recognized. The use of brain mapping via quantitative-EEG (qEEG) comparative analysis enables researchers to identify deviations or abnormalities and track the changes in neurological patterns when a targeted drug or specific nutrition is administered over time. High-functioning mild-to-borderline intellectual disorders (MBID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) constitute leading global public health challenges due to their high prev

BACKGROUND: A positive association has been reported between elevated serum levels of uric acid (UA) with impulsivity and hyperactivity, behavior in murine models, and human psychopathologies. Still, other factors, such as diet composition, have not been considered. This study aims to determine the association between serum UA, impulsivity/hyperactivity symptoms, and dietary components in adults with psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 128 adults who attended a psychiatric service. Fasting serum UA levels were determined by spectrophotometry. I

Clinical evidence increasingly identifies individuals with severe mental disorders as a population exhibiting markedly elevated susceptibility to diabetes and its associated complications. Within this context, physical inactivity and prolonged sedentary behavior emerge as prominent, modifiable risk factors contributing to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, a critical gap persists regarding whether obesity and age significantly modify the protective association of physical activity (PA) and T2DM, and the precise nature of this dose-response relationship remains inadequately characterized

The ketogenic diet (KD) is a dietary intervention comprising a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, and moderate-protein intake designed to induce a metabolic state known as ketosis, whereby ketone bodies are produced as an alternative source of energy. Initially established as a treatment for intractable epilepsy, the KD has subsequently gained significant attention for its potential to manage neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's disease. Ketone bodies, such as beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), have been demonstrated to possess neuroprotective properties. The incr

OBJECTIVES: Eating attitudes represent a significant health risk for young women. According to Japan's 2019 National Health and Nutrition Survey, 20.7% of women in their 20s have a Body mass index (BMI) below 18.5 kg/m2. In this study we aimed to examine the psychological mechanisms underlying body image distortion, weight loss desire, and high Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) scores, with a focus on personality traits and self-efficacy, in young women without suspected eating disorders.
METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted in December 2020 on 167 female university st
