An Anatomic Study of the Endoscopic Orbitozygomatic Approach for Extradural Access to the Orbit, Cavernous Sinus, and Infratemporal Fossa.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Access to the orbit, cavernous sinus, Meckel cave (MC), and infratemporal fossa (ITF) remains challenging due to the complex 3-dimensional anatomy and proximity to critical neurovascular structures. An extradural endoscopic orbitozygomatic (OZ) approach has the potential to provide a direct surgical corridor across these compartments while minimizing the limitations of compartment-specific corridors. METHODS: Five formalin-fixed, silicone-injected cadaveric heads (10 sides) were dissected using an extradural OZ approach under operative microscopy supplemented with 0…

Specific Position of Halogen in Crystalline TADF Scintillators Enables Efficient Triplet Harvesting Through Vibrational Modulation of Spin-Orbit Coupling.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) offers a powerful route for harvesting triplet excitons in organic scintillators, yet achieving simultaneously small singlet-triplet gaps and efficient spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in rigid molecular crystals remains a fundamental challenge. Here we demonstrate that targeted halogen substitution can activate vibrationally assisted spin-flip channels that dramatically enhance triplet harvesting in crystalline donor-acceptor emitters, tailoring them for scintillators with higher light yield and faster response times. Using DMAC-TRZ derivatives bearing…

Quantitative Anatomic Comparison of Microsurgical Transcranial, Endoscopic Endonasal, and Transorbital Approaches to the Orbit and Surrounding Skull-Base Regions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Microsurgical transcranial approaches (MTAs) to the orbit and surrounding skull-base region lesions have been progressively complemented by endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEAs) and endoscopic transorbital approaches (ETOAs). This study provides the first quantitative, navigation-based comparison of working volumes and exposure areas of major approaches to the orbit and surrounding skull-base regions. METHODS: Five alcohol-fixed specimens were dissected. Twenty-six subregions grouped into the orbit, midline, spheno-orbital, and cavernous regions were segmented. Nine…

A Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Queue Scheduling and Optimization Mechanism for Large-Scale Low-Earth-Orbit Satellite Communication Networks.

The spatial topology of large-scale low-Earth-orbit satellite communication networks is dynamically time-variant, and the load on the output ports of network nodes is continuously changing. The lengths and numbers of output port queues at each network node can affect the packet loss rate and end-to-end latency of traffic flows. In order to provide high-quality satellite communication services, it is necessary to schedule and optimize the lengths and numbers of queues used for transmitting time-sensitive traffic flows at each node's output port to achieve the best deterministic transmission per…

Non-linear charge currents and the planar Hall effect in quantum wells with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions.

We calculate the non-linear charge currents in a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba (α) and Dresselhaus (β) linear spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) in the presence of in-plane electricEand magneticBfields. Working in a rotated system of coordinates that introducesα±βas effective couplings on perpendicular directions, we show that the currents, quadratic in the electric field, exist for all values of the chemical potentialµ, above or below the band crossing energyE0. Our formalism uses a second order correction to the particle distribution functionδf(2)derived in a semi-classical approxi…

On the Role of Spin-Orbit Coupling and State-Crossing Topography in the Nonradiative Decay of Ir(III) Complexes.

A pillar of our current understanding of the photoluminescence of Ir(III) complexes is the assumption that the population of triplet metal-centered states determines an efficient nonradiative decay to the ground state minimum. Based on that assumption, the energy separation between the emitting state and the minimum-energy crossing point of the triplet metal-centered and ground states has been employed as a key variable for evaluating the ability of Ir(III) complexes to decay nonradiatively. We demonstrate that the strong spin-orbit coupling between the triplet metal-centered and ground state …

Field-Free, Deterministic Giant Spin-Orbit Torque Switching of 1.3 T Perpendicular Magnetization With Symmetry-Lifted Topological Surface States.

The field-free control of perpendicular magnetization using spin-orbit torque (SOT) is a key challenge in spintronics, simplifying design and integration for both memory and logic applications. Unlike conventional heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures that already break out-of-plane symmetry, thus can readily offer in-plane switching, realizing deterministic out-of-plane switching requires breaking additional in-plane symmetries. In this study, we demonstrate field-free switching in a heterostructure composed of a self-intercalated 2D magnet, Cr3Te4, and a topological insulator, (Bi0.75Sb0.…

Analysis of the Relationships Between the Eyeball and the Orbit in Patients Under 4 Years Old Using Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between the orbital ring and the eyeball in the sagittal plane, as observed through computed tomography (CT), is crucial for the surgical approach, correction, and postoperative monitoring (normalization, failure, or recurrence) of craniofacial anomalies affecting the orbital region of the eyeball. The objective of this study is to describe the anthropometric reference points proposed by Mulliken and colleagues and the indices of Waitzman and Posnick using CT in patients under 4 years old. METHODS: A retrospective, observational, descriptive study was conducted on …

Imaging the state-to-state charge-transfer dynamics between the spin-orbit excited Ar+(2P1/2) ion and N2.

Ar++N2 → Ar+N2+ has served as a paradigm for charge-transfer dynamics studies during the last several decades. Despite significant experimental and theoretical efforts on this model system, state-resolved experimental investigations on the microscopic charge-transfer mechanism between the spin-orbit excited Ar+(2P1/2) ion and N2 have been rare. Here, we measure the first quantum state-to-state differential cross sections for Ar++N2 → Ar+N2+ with the Ar+ ion prepared exclusively in the spin-orbit excited state 2P1/2 on a crossed-beam setup with three-dimensional velocity-map imaging. Trajectory…

Highly Efficient Room-Temperature Spin-Orbit-Torque Switching in a Van der Waals Heterostructure of Topological Insulator and Ferromagnet.

All-Van der Waals (vdW)-material-based heterostructures with atomically sharp interfaces offer a versatile platform for high-performing spintronic functionalities at room temperature. One of the key components is vdW topological insulators (TIs), which can produce a strong spin-orbit-torque (SOT) through the spin-momentum locking of their topological surface state (TSS). However, the relatively low conductance of the TSS introduces a current leakage problem through the bulk states of the TI or the adjacent ferromagnetic metal layers, reducing the interfacial charge-to-spin conversion efficienc…

Unravelling the Mechanism of CO2 Activation: Insights Into Metal-Metal Cooperativity and Spin-Orbit Coupling with {3d-4f} Catalysts.

Converting CO2 into useful chemicals using metal catalysts is a significant challenge in chemistry. Among the various catalysts reported, transition metal lanthanide hybrid {3d-4f} complexes stand out for their superior efficiency and site selectivity. However, unlike transition metal catalysts, understanding the origin of this efficiency in lanthanides poses a challenge due to their orbital degeneracy, rendering the application of DFT methods ineffective. In this study, we employed a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO calculations to explore the mecha…

Automated 3-D Computer-Aided Measurement of the Bony Orbit: Evaluation of Correlations among Volume, Depth, and Surface Area.

(1)The study aimed to measure the depth, volume, and surface area of the intact human orbit by applying an automated method of CT segmentation and to evaluate correlations among depth, volume, and surface area. Additionally, the relative increases in volume and surface area in proportion to the diagonal of the orbit were assessed. (2) CT data from 174 patients were analyzed. A ball-shaped mesh consisting of tetrahedral elements was inserted inside orbits until it encountered the bony boundaries. Orbital volume, area depth, and their correlations were measured. For the validation, an ICC was us…

Imaging the Collision Energy-Dependent Charge-Transfer Dynamics between the Spin-Orbit Ground Ar+(2P3/2) Ion and CO.

The collisional charge-transfer reaction between Ar+(2P3/2,1/2) and CO represents one of the most studied ion-molecule systems; many controversies persist among different studies, and the detailed quantum state-to-state charge-transfer dynamics remains unknown. Here, differential cross sections of the charge-transfer process between the spin-orbit ground Ar+(2P3/2) ion and CO are reported at three center-of-mass collision energies of 1.02, 0.72, and 0.40 eV using a home-built three-dimensional velocity-map imaging-based ion-molecule crossed beam setup. At all three collision energies, the dire…

Combined effect of strain and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling on band gap engineering of GNRs: a first-principles study.

By employing first-principles calculations, we theoretically investigate the impact of uniaxial strain and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the electronic properties of zigzag and armchair edge hydrogen (H)-passivated graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). We find that band structure and density of states of 4-zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) and 15-armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) are highly sensitive to the combined effect of strain and intrinsic SOC. In the case of H-passivated 4-ZGNR, SOC with a strain>10% increases the energy band by increasing spin-polarized states at the opposite edges.…

Case Report: Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Orbit in a Patient With Carney's Syndrome Treated With Multidisciplinary Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare malignancy of invasive epithelium with keratinocyte differentiation, and it is the most common form of eyelid malignant neoplasm, comprising 5%-10% of malignancies. While SCC rarely affects the orbit, it may be involved through local invasion from a cutaneous primary site or extension by perineural invasion. Only 12 cases of primary orbital SCC have been reported until now. Here, we present a case of primary carcinoma of the right orbit with coexisting Carney's syndrome, a rare genetic disorder associated with multiple endocrine neoplasias (M…

Variations in DNA methylation and the role of regulatory factors in rice (Oryza sativa) response to lunar orbit stressors.

Deep space flight imposes higher levels of damage on biological organisms; however, its specific effects on rice remain unclear. To investigate the variations in DNA methylation under deep space flight conditions, this study examined rice seeds carried by Chang'e-5. After 23 days of lunar orbital flight, the samples were planted in an artificial climate chamber and subjected to transcriptome and DNA methylation sequencing during the tillering and heading stages. The methylation patterns in the rice genome exhibited variability in response to lunar orbital stressors. DNA methylation alters the …
