BACKGROUND: Tumors involving the sellar area often cause visual disorders due to optic nerves/chiasm compression, so that surgery is required. However, the likelihood of visual improvement/restoration is variable. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a valid diagnostic tool for defining pathological conditions of the optic apparatus. We herein investigated the role of the SD-OCT and the best corrected visual acuity in predicting postoperative visual recovery, in patients complaining of chiasm compression due to sellar-suprasellar lesions.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 20 patients (7 f

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the impact of age on outcomes in patients with moderate- and high-risk non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) enrolled in the ACUITY (Acute Catheterization and Urgent Intervention Triage Strategy) trial.
BACKGROUND: Aging-associated changes in physiology and metabolism may alter the risk and benefit of therapeutic strategies from that observed in younger people.
METHODS: We performed a pre-specified analysis of 30-day and 1-year outcomes in 4 age groups, overall and among those undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Introduction: Amblyopia is a common disease, and interventions like patching treatment are well studied. When standard therapy fails, sometimes uncommon treatment options become necessary. Methods: We present three cases of patients with severe strabismic amblyopia with initial visual acuities of 20/400, 20/2000 and 20/160 who failed conventional treatment and subsequently received treatment with high-powered contact lenses (HPCL) of either + 22D or + 25D strength. Results: Visual acuity markedly improved in all three cases: 20/20, 20/50 and 20/25, respectively. Conclusion: While amblyopia tre

This study describes a pars plana incision surgical technique combined with 23 or 25-gauge vitrectomy in the management of intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) and to assess its anatomical and functional results. Sixteen patients with ocular trauma complicated with IOFB were enrolled in our study. The mean preoperative visual acuity was 2.01 ± 0.55 LogMAR, and the mean postoperative visual acuity at the final visit was improved to 0.91 ± 0.58 LogMAR (p < 0.001). Until the last follow-up, all IOFBs were successfully removed and anatomic success was obtained. Complications, such as endophthalmitis

A 60-year-old woman with a 3-day history of ataxic gait, blurred vision, and upper extremity paresthesia was admitted to our hospital. She presented with severe visual disturbances (finger counting), ophthalmoplegia, neck weakness, and sensory ataxia. Serum anti-GQ1b antibody, anti-GM3 antibody, and anti-GD3 antibody were strongly positive, which might contribute to the pathogenesis. Since we suspected Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), intravenous immunoglobulin therapy (IVIg) and high-dose steroid therapy were administered; however, improvements in her visual acuity were minimal. Additional IVIg

UNLABELLED: Clinical case The case concerns a 10-year-old boy of African origin, who suffered a mild ocular trauma to the left eye. Upon examination, the best visual acuity was 0.2 using the Snellen scale, with a 1mm height hyphema, intraocular pressure (IOP) of 12mmHg on left eye, with an increase up to 20mmHg within 72h. With a positive test for sickle cell disease, it was decided to treat medically with transcorneal oxygen therapy. Clearing of the anterior chamber was achieved, with and improvement in the best visual acuity to 0.8, and lowering of IOP to 8mmHg.

BACKGROUND: Variable pupillary responses have been described with carotid-cavernous sinus fistulas. These often are associated with a decrease in visual acuity and attributed to retinal ischemia. We propose a novel pathophysiologic mechanism for changes in pupillary reactivity involving anatomic changes secondary to choroidal effusion.
METHODS: To demonstrate proof-of-concept, we investigated 2 consecutive patients with carotid-cavernous sinus fistulas and pupillary disturbances using repeated refractions and anterior segment ultrasound biomicroscopy.
RESULTS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy demons

The various effects of cataract on vision are reviewed. The morphological types of senile cataract are classified into three basic categories: cortical spoke, nuclear and posterior subcapsular (PSC). The significant basic effect of cataract on the optical system of the eye is that of light scattering. Forward light scattering (light scattered towards the retina) accounts for reduced contrast sensitivity, for glare and for reduced visual acuity. Other effects of cataract are a myopic shift, a possible astigmatism change, monocular diplopia and polyopia, colour vision shift, reduced light transm

Peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) is a destructive, inflammatory process that can lead to corneal perforation and visual loss. Successful control of PUK has been reported with conjunctival resection, cyanoacrylate adhesive, and systemic immunosuppression. Cases with impending or actual corneal perforation may require more extensive surgery, including lamellar or penetrating keratoplasty, to maintain the integrity of the globe. We report on 17 eyes of 14 patients with PUK that required tectonic keratoplasty because of progressive ulceration. Surgery with concomitant immunosuppression preser
