Harnessing the gut microbiome to combat tuberculosis: a technological and clinical review.

Tuberculosis (TB), especially multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant strains, remains a severe global health threat. Advances in … improves diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcome prediction. GM-targeted interventions, including probiotics, dietary adjustment and fecal microbiota transplantation, can enhance therapeutic efficacy and relieve adverse drug reactions. Current limitations include insufficient validation of the gut-lung axis' causal mechanisms, lagged clinical translation o …

Nutraceutical interventions for neuroprotection: a comprehensive review.

Nutraceuticals, bioactive compounds derived from food sources, are emerging as promising agents for neuroprotection, particularly through their modulation of gut health. Unlike conventional single-molecule therapeutics that often target isolated pathways, nutraceuticals offer a multi-targeted approach by influencing the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication network linking the gut microbiota and the central nervous system. Key nutraceuticals such as probiotics, prebiotics, polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins have been shown to beneficially alter microbiota composition, reduc…

Approach to Therapy for Chronic Pouchitis.

Chronic pouchitis (CP) occurs in approximately 20% of patients with ulcerative colitis after total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis and is categorized as antibiotic dependent, antibiotic refractory, or Crohn's disease-like. The management of CP is challenging because of limited evidence and few randomized controlled trials. In this review, we discuss the medical management of CP and its supporting data delineated by type of therapy.

Modulating the Gut Microbiome in Type 2 Diabetes: Nutritional and Therapeutic Strategies.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex metabolic disorder influenced not only by genetics, diet, and lifestyle but also by the gut microbiota. Dysbiosis (imbalances in microbial composition) can disrupt gut barrier integrity, alter microbial metabolites, and trigger low-grade inflammation, contributing to insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. Nutritional interventions, such as probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, and bioactive food components, represent potential therapeutic approaches for ameliorating gut eubiosis and advancing glycemic regulation. This narrative review…

Effectiveness of biofilm-targeted therapy in managing and preventing dental caries: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a biofilm-dependent disease that continues to challenge conventional preventive strategies, such as fluoride application and mechanical plaque removal. Biofilm-targeted therapies (BTT), including probiotics, photodynamic therapy, enzymatic treatments, and natural compounds, represent promising alternatives to disrupt pathogenic biofilms effectively. However, the available evidence remains fragmented, with inconsistent methodologies and limited clinical data hindering comprehensive conclusions. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis will synthesize evide…

Ningxiang pig-derived Lactobacillus reuteri improves the gut health of weaned piglets by regulating intestinal barrier function and cytokine profiles.

Weaning stress in piglets can induce intestinal damage, resulting in impaired growth performance. Probiotics have emerged as significant contributors to enhancing gut health in piglets. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) supplementation on growth performance, intestinal immunity, and intestinal barrier integrity in weaned piglets. In this investigation, fourteen healthy weaned piglets of similar age and weight, were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 7), receiving either normal saline (Control group) or L. reuteri (L-treatment group) over a 16-day …

Importance of Gut Microbiota in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), such as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are chronic diseases of the digestive system with a multifactorial and not fully understood etiology. There is research suggesting that they may be initiated by genetic, immunological, and lifestyle factors. In turn, all of these factors play an important role in the modulation of intestinal microflora, and a significant proportion of IBD patients struggle with intestinal dysbiosis, which leads to the conclusion that intestinal microflora disorders may significantly increase the risk of developing IBD

The larvicidal effect of the supernatant of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 on Toxocara canis.

Human toxocariasis is a parasitic anthropozoonosis that is difficult to treat and control. A previous study carried out with Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 revealed that the cell free supernatant (CFS) of this probiotic killed 100% of Toxocara canis larvae in vitro. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of the CFS of L. acidophilus ATCC 4356, which may be involved in its larvicidal effects on T. canis. L. acidophilus ATCC 4356 was cultured, and lactic and acetic acids present in the CFS were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The levels of pH

Intestinal flora: a potential pathogenesis mechanism and treatment strategy for type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of pancreatic β-cells, leading to insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia, and its incidence is increasing year by year. The pathogenesis of T1DM is complex, mainly including genetic and environmental factors. Intestinal flora is the largest microbial community in the human body and plays a very important role in human health and disease. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that intestinal flora and its metabolites, as an environmental factor, regulate the development of T1DM through various
