Mumps is a contagious viral illness that classically presents with fever, parotid gland swelling, headache, and vomiting in unimmunized children. The complications of mumps most commonly include orchitis, pancreatitis, encephalitis, and meningitis. Optic neuritis, which refers to the inflammation of the optic nerve, in rare cases, can present after mumps meningoencephalitis and causes pain in the eye, and a decrease in visual acuity. We report and discuss a case of bilateral optic neuritis following mumps meningoencephalitis in a child. The patient was managed with short-term steroid therapy.

Paget-Schroetter syndrome (PSS), or effort thrombosis, refers to axillary and/or subclavian vein thrombosis associated with repetitive effort of the superior limbs, and is rare in the pediatric population. We report the case of a previously healthy 15-year-old boy who presented with a painful and swollen right arm after throwing firecrackers. Doppler ultrasound showed extensive right subclavian and axillary vein thrombosis. Anticoagulation therapy was started and had favorable evolution. We emphasize that PSS must be included in the differential diagnosis of a swollen arm.

We report the case of a 23-year-old man diagnosed with adult-onset idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip. Chondrolysis of the hip is a disorder most frequently seen in children who have suffered with slipped capital femoral epiphyses. Idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip is extremely rare and to our knowledge, its onset has never been documented in adults aged over 20. With reference to the available medical literature, we summarise the current clinical management of this unusual but important cause of young adult hip pain.

Both traumatic and congenital dislocation of the radial head are very rare in childhood. It can sometimes be difficult to tell them apart in practice. In this paper therefore, we present one case and discuss the various aspects of both conditions with reference to the available literature. Traumatic dislocation of the radial head is generally easily reduced without open surgery, and an open procedure is virtually never indicated in a patient who is still growing. In contrast, specific treatment of congenital radial head dislocation is not necessary because most patients are free of pain.

A male iniencephalic foetus of about 25 weeks gestation is described. The baby was born to a 22-year-old mother, who presented with abdominal pain of 1 day duration. An ultrasound scan at that time showed multiple foetal anomalies and the pregnancy was terminated. A stillborn baby was delivered. A 4 year-old boy was referred for diagnostic reevaluation with known pulmonary valve stenosis. Physical examination revealed multiple cafe-au-lait spots, inguinal freckling and on the right side in supraclavicular region a softly, non-painful tumour. The boy showed a mild mental and language retardation. Ultrasound and MRT demonstrated supraclavicular a plexiform neurofibroma and intracranial increased intensity lesions in basal ganglia and mesencephalon. In our patient, we have diagnosed a Watson-Syndrome, the overlap and differences to neurofibromatosis type I is discussed.
