Early Experience With Robotic-Assisted Radical Cystectomy: A Six-Case Series From a UK Centre.

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) is increasingly adopted as a minimally invasive alternative to open radical cystectomy for muscle-invasive and high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. This study presents early outcomes from the first six robotic cystectomies performed at a UK tertiary centre. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of the first six patients who underwent RARC between May and July 2025. Data collected included patient demographics, operative details, complications (graded by Clavien-Dindo), pathology, and follow-up outcomes. RESULTS: The medi

Robotic Esophagogastric Resection for EGJ GIST and Intrathoracic Esophagogastric Anastomoses with Luminal Apposing Metal Stent.

BACKGROUND: Luminal apposing metal stent (LAMS) has been used to create endoscopic large-caliber communications between different organs.1 LAMS has an anti-migration design. Dilation is progressive and does not cause ischemia or inflammation. There is no tissue loss, as with stapled anastomosis, we do not have any intercepting staple line.2-7 Being coated allows for early refeeding. The aim of this study was to assess the preliminary results of the use of the LAMS in surgical gastrointestinal anastomoses. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An 82-year-old patient underwent robotic proximal esophagogastric

Tailoring robot-assisted arm training to individuals with stroke: bridging neuroscience principles and clinical practice.

Robot-assisted arm training (RAAT) has demonstrated promising potential in improving rehabilitation outcomes for individuals with neurological conditions, particularly stroke. Despite 20 years of their use in clinical and research settings, there are still significant needs to be made concerning clinical indications. In the present perspective manuscript, we provide some hypotheses of the suitability of different RAAT according to the features of the available devices and clinical characteristics, showing their limitations and strengths. Several factors were considered in the optimization of R

Eye-tracking metrics as a new tool to assess patient's adherence to robot-assisted gait training.

The growing use of robotic rehabilitation in clinical practice has changed the dyadic interaction between physiotherapist and patient, introducing novel elements such as performance-based feedback (FB). The latter has a strong impact on patients' motivation, participation and error-driver learning, which are crucial aspects to consider in order to optimize the rehabilitation session to achieve successful outcomes. In addition, the presence of FB has a relevant contribution in promoting the active participation of the patient during the execution of movement. Several studies have demonstrated,

Comparative study of open versus robotic radical prostatectomy in renal transplant recipients and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, including renal transplant recipients (RTRs), who are becoming more numerous owing to improvements in transplant outcomes. Although radical prostatectomy (RP) remains a common curative procedure, RTRs present unique surgical challenges due to their altered pelvic anatomy and the need for immunosuppression. This study aimed to compare the perioperative, oncological, and functional outcomes of open radical prostatectomy (ORP) and robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) performed by two skilled surgeons on RTRs. A pilot study for self-guided, active robotic training of proprioception of the upper limb in chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive impairments of the upper limb are common after stroke. These impairments are not typically addressed during assessment or rehabilitation. Currently, most robotic paradigms for training of the upper limb have focused solely on improving motor function or have targeted proprioception in individuals with combined use of visual feedback. Our goal was to design a training paradigm that directly targets proprioception of the upper limb, while minimizing reliance on other sensory information to improve sensorimotor function after stroke. METHODS: In this pilot study, 5 ind

Research on rehabilitation robot control based on port-Hamiltonian systems and fatigue dissipation port compensation.

INTRODUCTION: Upper-limb rehabilitation robots have been demonstrated to effectively promote motor recovery in stroke patients. However, in active training modes, control instability may be induced by the nonlinear and time-varying characteristics of muscle fatigue, increasing the risks of physical human-robot interaction and ultimately limiting rehabilitation outcomes. METHODS: A novel control strategy within the port-Hamiltonian framework, incorporating a dynamic muscle fatigue model. Fatigue levels were assessed in real time using surface electromyography (sEMG) signals and mapped to dampi

The amount of mediastinal lymph nodes dissected in robot-assisted cervical esophagectomy-an experimental cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Transthoracic esophagectomy (TTE) is the preferred approach for curative esophageal cancer. However, concomitant single-lung ventilation limits its use in patients with compromised cardio-pulmonary function. Transhiatal esophagectomy (THE) grants two-lung ventilation yet offers a limited mediastinal lymphadenectomy and is only suitable for distal tumors. A promising alternative is robot-assisted cervical esophagectomy (RACE). Initial studies show its feasibility, yet, the mediastinal lymph node yield (LNY) is unknown. The aim of this study is to describe the accessibility of the ly

The use of laser-assisted cart positioning significantly reduces the docking time of multimodular robotic systems.

The Hugo RAS system is characterized by its multimodular design, which leads to an increased docking effort. Exact data for docking time and the learning curve is missing. We describe for the first time the use of a laser-guided cart positioning to reduce the docking time. In this prospective monocentric study, the docking time was evalutated for a consecutive series of pelvic surgeries with the Hugo RAS system. In a subgroup, a cross-line laser was adapted at the cart for positioning using fix points at the ceiling. The medical personnel were classified as "inexperienced" with ≤ 5 consecutive

Walking control of humanoid robots based on improved footstep planner and whole-body coordination controller.

High-speed walking is fundamental for humanoid robots to quickly reach the work site in emergency scenarios. According to biological studies, the coordinated motion of the arms and waist can significantly enhance walking speed and stability in humans. However, existing humanoid robot walking control frameworks predominantly focus on leg control, often overlooking the utilization of upper body joints. In this paper, a novel walking control framework combining the improved footstep planner and the whole-body coordination controller is proposed, aiming to improve the humanoid robot's tracking acc

Short-term Outcomes of Robotic Lateral Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection for Lower Rectal Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Rectal cancer is among the main causes of cancer-related mortalities worldwide, necessitating more effective treatment strategies. It is considered that lateral pelvic lymph node dissection (LPND) for rectal cancer patients can contribute to local tumor control and that robotic LPND (Rob-LPND) may be more suitable for LPND, due to technical advantages of precise manipulation in a narrow pelvic space. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we evaluated the short-term outcomes of laparoscopic-LPND (Lap-LPND) versus Rob-LPND in patients undergoing radical surgery for rectal cancer.

Controlling of Applied Force and Cornea Displacement Estimation in Robotic Corneal Surgery With a Gripper Surgical Instrument.

BACKGROUND: The human eye consists of highly sensitive, hydrated, and relatively thin tissues, making precise control and accurate force estimation crucial in robotic eye surgery. This paper introduces a novel control method and state observer designed for a gripper surgical instrument used on the external ocular surface during robotic eye surgery. METHODS: A novel state observer, operating in tandem with the controller, estimates the applied force. The proposed control approach, termed the Fixed-time Observer-based Sliding Mode Control (FOSMC), estimates the applied force by determining the

A randomized controlled trial of the outcomes of Arista™ hemostatic agent in robotic ventral hernia repair.

Ventral hernia repairs (VHR) are commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States, with over 300,000 cases treated annually. Robotic surgery has gained traction for its safety and efficacy in VHR, particularly with techniques such as myofascial release. However, the extensive dissection involved in these procedures may lead to postoperative complications like seromas and hematomas. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Arista™, an FDA-approved hemostatic agent, in reducing these complications during robotic-assisted laparoscopic VHR involving mesh placement in the retrorect
