Co-creating a gamified tool for cannabis and tobacco use monitoring: Participant-driven development.

INTRODUCTION: The growing use of cannabis, often alongside tobacco, presents challenges for substance use treatment programs (SUTPs), as it intensifies withdrawal symptoms. To address dual dependencies and improve engagement, we developed a gamified web app for individuals in SUTP who use cannabis to monitor their use. This paper describes the tool's co-creation process and and, findings that guided alignment with target needs. METHODS: Seventeen adults with current or past cannabis use were recruited from SUTPs in Catalonia (2021-2023). Using a qualitative, participatory design, the study in

Perceived financial hardship and sleep in an adult population-based cohort: The mediating role of psychosocial and lifestyle-related factors.

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities in sleep have been reported, but there is less research on the mechanisms underlying this association. This study investigates the relationship between financial hardship and sleep within the general adult population, focusing on the mediating effects of psychosocial and lifestyle-related factors. METHODS: We used data from the Specchio cohort, a population-based study in Geneva, Switzerland, initiated in December 2020. Perceived financial hardship and sleep outcomes (insomnia, sleep quality, and sleep duration) were assessed by questionnaire in 2020 to 2021. C

Should I stay or should I go? Leveraging data-driven approaches to explore the effect of various disaster policies on postearthquake household relocation decision-making.

Devastating earthquakes can cause affected households to relocate. Postearthquake relocation disrupts impacted households' social ties and, in some instances, their access to affordable services. Simulation-based approaches that model postearthquake relocation decision-making can be valuable tools for supporting the development of related disaster risk reduction (DRR) policies. Yet, existing versions of these models focus particularly on housing-related factors, which are not the sole driver of postearthquake relocation. We integrate data-driven approaches and local data to account for postear

Co-creating community initiatives on physical activity and healthy eating in a low-income neighbourhood in Quito, Ecuador.

Promoting healthy behaviours to improve population health requires strategies that foster supportive environments and actively engage communities. Here, we detail an evidence-informed co-creation process in Ferroviaria, a low-income neighbourhood in Quito, Ecuador, led by six members of a local Women's Association. Co-creation here involved a participatory approach that integrated local epidemiological data on non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors and employed the "Dialogue Forum" methodology to guide collective decision-making. Through this process, community leaders and participants pr

Modern Diets, Metabolic Inequity, and Race-Ethnic Disparities: Unraveling the Associations With MASLD and Cancer Risk.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is quickly emerging as a global public health concern, primarily fueled by the rising consumption of processed and ultraprocessed foods. This global health issue, showing a 50% increase in prevalence over two decades to 38% of the global population, is now the second most common cause of end-stage liver disease and liver transplants in Europe and the United States and an emerging driver of hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly in Hispanic and non-Hispanic White populations. Its prevalence, driven by increasing consumption of ult

Truth assessment on a global level: How people integrate multiple pieces of repeated and nonrepeated information into perceptions of truth.

People are more likely to judge information as true when it has been encountered before, a prominent phenomenon called the truth effect. While this effect is well-studied for single information pieces, previous research has neglected that people often need to assess the truth of compounds of old and new information (e.g., a social media post containing old and new information). In eight preregistered experiments (N = 1,650), we tested how people integrate multiple pieces of old or new information into judgments of truth. We found that participants' truth judgments were consistent with an avera

Promoting community health and climate justice co-benefits: insights from a rural and remote island climate planning process.

Climate change is an environmental crisis, a health crisis, a socio-political and an economic crisis that illuminates the ways in which our human-environment relationships are arriving at crucial tipping points. Through these relational axes, social structures, and institutional practices, patterns of inequity are produced, wherein climate change disproportionately impacts several priority populations, including rural and remote communities. To make evidence-based change, it is important that engagements with climate change are informed by data that convey the nuance of various living realitie
