From pillar to post: homeless women's experiences of social care.

This paper reports findings from a longitudinal study of homeless women. Thirty-eight women were recruited with a retention rate of 58% over three rounds of interviews. Interviews explored specific events in women's lives, their current living arrangements and how their experiences and needs, including for social care, changed over time. Data were analysed thematically using a priori codes. Women reported a range of complex issues, consistent with experiences of deep social exclusion and received support from both statutory and voluntary agencies. Although women appreciated the support they re

Alone and content: frail seniors living in their own homes compared to those who live with others.

This study compared the psychosocial well-being and functioning of frail elderly people who live alone to those who live with others. An exploratory study was conducted with a sample of 5,265 members of a social HMO in Southern California. Those living alone were more likely to be widowed, female, and European American. Elderly people living with others reported higher levels of depression and poorer functioning. Both groups reported having a social support network, but the sources of support varied. This study contradicts older research with its finding that living alone is not synonymous wit…

Promoting resilience with social-emotional learning: Young adult follow-up of a preschool randomized-controlled trial.

Young adults are experiencing emotional distress at unprecedented levels, with rates of loneliness, social isolation, and poor mental health especially high among those marginalized by economic hardship. Individuals who experience exposure to adverse experiences during childhood face heightened vulnerability, indicating a need to enhance early developmental supports. Public investment in early childhood education provides a unique opportunity to strengthen social-emotional supports for children at socioeconomic risk. This longitudinal study evaluated the impact of enriching Head Start classroo

Lifestyle Behaviors and their Impact on Sleep Quality and Health-Related Quality of Life Among First-Year University Students in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: First-year university students often face challenges in adapting to new academic, social, and living environments, which can lead to significant lifestyle changes and negatively impact their sleep quality (SQ) and overall quality of life (QoL). However, these issues remain insufficiently explored, particularly in low- and middle-income contexts; therefore, this study aims to examine the relationships among social support, lifestyle behaviors, SQ, and QoL among first-year students in Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2021 to August 2022 involving 1…

Mapping social implications of wearables to monitor physical activity in palliative care - a qualitative approach.

BACKGROUND: Reduced physical activity is common among patients receiving palliative care. Wearables and other measurement devices offer opportunities to objectively monitor activity and support clinical decision-making and patient motivation. However, integrating such technologies into palliative care may affect care delivery, including routines, interactions and underlying principles. Given the strong emphasis on interpersonal relationships and patient-centeredness in this setting, wearables may entail specific social implications. This study therefore aims to map the social implications of u

Social-Cognitive Frameworks for Understanding the Connection Between Social Isolation and Psychosis Risk.

Increasing evidence demonstrates an association between social isolation and psychosis risk. In this perspective, we attempt to account for why that is. Drawing from work in social psychology, social neuroscience, and clinical psychological science, we present two frameworks for understanding the association between social isolation and psychosis risk: the "social-needs" framework and the "social-processing" framework. Social needs states that because of people's inherent social needs, isolation produces increased social attention, perception, and thought to fill the social void, resulting in

Building Emergency Response Capacity: Multi-Career-Stage Social Workers' Engagement with Homeless Sector during the First Two Waves of COVID-19 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The dramatic increase of global extreme events (e.g., natural, technological, and willful hazards) propels social workers to be equipped with emergency response capacity, supporting affected individuals, families, and communities to prepare, respond, and recover from disasters. Although social workers have historically been engaged in emergency response, social work curriculum and professional training remain slow to adapt, jeopardizing their capacity to support the vulnerable and marginalized populations, who have always been disproportionately affected by extreme events. In response to this

Decision Support Needs for Patients with Severe Symptomatic Aortic Stenosis.

Social workers in healthcare settings often support patient decision-making processes for complex medical decisions. The objective of this study was to examine decision support needs for patients considering aortic valve replacement (AVR) for aortic stenosis. Seventeen qualitative interviews were conducted to explore treatment decision experiences of patients who accepted AVR. Analysis was conducted using a mixed inductive-deductive approach. Fear was a prevalent response for most participants in the face of AVR. Two general paths of decision making emerged: an "active" information seeking app

A qualitative study on the elderly and mental health during the COVID-19 lockdown in Buenos Aires, Argentina - Part 1.

INTRODUCTION: On March 19, 2020, preventive and mandatory social isolation was decreed in Argentina in response to the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the disease it causes (COVID-19). This measure aimed to reduce the transmission of the virus and the resulting severe respira-tory condition that frequently besets older adults. However, this measure can also affect the support networks of these isolated people. OBJECTIVES: To explore the emerging needs related to the mental health of isolated older adults in this period and to identify the main support networks they have and the em

A study on the relationship between psychological resilience, vagal tone, and social adaptation: A non-pharmacological treatment perspective based on left-behind children.

This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological resilience, vagal tone (heart rate variability [HRV]), and social adaptation, with a focus on the mediating role of HRV in the impact of psychological resilience on social adaptation. It also seeks to provide theoretical support for mental health interventions for left-behind children from a non-pharmacological perspective. This study employed a cross-sectional design with cluster sampling to select 2 middle schools in the urban-rural fringe of Zaoqiang County, Hebei Province, with a total of 312 left-behind children as the rese

Factors associated with the utilization and costs of health and social services in frail elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: Universal access is one of the major aims in public health and social care. Services should be provided on the basis of individual needs. However, municipal autonomy and the fragmentation of services may jeopardize universal access and lead to variation between municipalities in the delivery of services. This paper aims to identify patient-level characteristics and municipality-level service patterns that may have an influence on the use and costs of health and social services of frail elderly patients. METHODS: Hierarchical analysis was applied to estimate the effects of patient

Long-term impact of acute pancreatitis on patients' quality of life: a multi-center prospective study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Although acute pancreatitis often resolves, its long-term impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and social participation remains unclear. This study investigated the longitudinal changes in HRQoL and factors affecting incomplete recovery of social participation following acute pancreatitis. METHODS: This multi-center, prospective cohort study included patients aged ≥ 18 years who were hospitalized with acute pancreatitis at 20 hospitals across Japan between April 2018 and March 2024. Patients were consecutively enrolled, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was as

Women's health in urban Mali: social predictors and health itineraries.

Social and marital factors may influence women's health outcomes. This is of particular relevance in sub-Saharan Africa, where women's health indicators lag behind the rest of the world. Our study examines the impact of social mediators of women's health during key events (pregnancy and illness) in urban Mali. In this cross-sectional study, we interviewed 324 women aged 15-80, living in Bamako, the capital city, in 1999. We used mixed quantitative and qualitative methods to obtain detailed histories of pregnancy and illness during specific time periods preceding the survey. We examined the rol
