A 68-year-old man with aortic arch aneurysm was referred to our department. Preoperative carotid echography and magnetic resonance angiography revealed occlusion of the left internal carotid artery. Single-photon emission computed tomography scanning indicated that cerebral blood flow was decreased and reactivity to acetazolamide was reduced in the left temporal lobe. A successful superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery anastomosis was first made by neurosurgeons. A postoperative single-photon emission computed tomography scan showed that cerebral blood flow and reactivity to acetaz…

Meningiomas are the most frequent benign intracranial tumor. Up to 20% of these neoplasms may eventually extend beyond the skull, particularly when tumor spread affects the temporal bone. We report a clinicopathological observation of an extracranial meningothelial meningioma that was diagnosed morphologically using immunohistochemical techniques. The tumor presented as polyp in the ear canal of a 70-year-old woman who had a history of ear disease and seizures and was under medical treatment. The growth was associated with a right temporal lobe tumor involving the petrosal bone that had been d…

A 69-year old man presented with a subarachnoid hemorrhage associated with a large intracerebral hematoma in the right temporal lobe. The oblique views of cranio-orbital computerized tomographic angiography (CTA) were suspicious for an aneurysm on a middle cerebral artery branch. At surgery, a cystic mass was found in the Sylvian fissure, associated with an aneurysm on a distal branch of the anterior temporal artery. The aneurysm was not situated at a bifurcation of the artery and was located beneath the cyst. It was secured by trapping. Pathological examination revealed that the cystic lesion…

The authors describe the clinical and radiological features in 3 children with a diffuse hemispheric dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNET) presenting with severe epilepsy and a previously unreported and characteristic MR imaging appearance. The DNET is a well-recognized cause of focal epilepsy, usually with a very good response to resection. These tumors are usually intracortical, and most commonly arise in the temporal lobe or frontal lobes. Radiologically they are usually sharply demarcated, and show little contrast enhancement. Three children (2 boys and 1 girl) presented at 14, 17,…

BACKGROUND: Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common type of focal epilepsy, but hereditary factors are usually overlooked. Reelin (RELN) is considered to be the second most common pathogenic gene implicated in autosomal dominant lateral temporal epilepsy (ADLTE). However, this mutation is not frequently discovered in the Chinese population. Additionally, there are few clinical studies regarding the connection between RELN and glioma.
CASE PRESENTATION: The healthcare records of an 8-year-old child who experienced generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) during sleep for 7 years were retrosp…

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) both show abnormal resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of default mode network (DMN), but it is unclear to what extent these abnormalities are shared. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive meta-analysis, including 31 MCI studies and 20 AD studies. MCI patients, compared to controls, showed decreased within-DMN rsFC in bilateral medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex (mPFC/ACC), precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right temporal lobes, and left angular gyrus and increased rsFC between DMN and left inferi…

Previous studies indicate changes in neurotransmission along the auditory pathway in subjective tinnitus. Most authors, however, investigated brain regions including the primary auditory cortex, whose physiology can be affected by concurrent hearing deficits. In the present MR spectroscopy study we assumed increased levels of glutamate and glutamine (Glx), and other Central Nervous System metabolites in the temporal lobe outside the primary auditory cortex, in a region involved in conscious auditory perception and memory. We studied 52 participants with unilateral (n = 24) and bilateral (n = 2…

BACKGROUND: Traumatic intracranial aneurysm (TICA) accounts for approximately 1% of cerebral aneurysms. There are few reports of TICA limited to the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA-TICA).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 69-year-old woman fell into a shallow river, bruising her head and chest, and was admitted to our emergency department with disorientation. Computed tomography (CT) showed subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), left temporal lobe contusion, and fractures of the right temporal bone. A cerebral CT angiogram revealed no vascular abnormalities or aneurysm…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Square-wave jerks (SWJs) are the most common saccadic intrusion in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), but their g … not mediated by midbrain atrophy. Instead, supratentorial cortical structures located mainly in the temporal lobe appear to be deeply involved in the generation of abnormally high SWJ rates in these patients. Known anatomical connections of the temporal lobe to the superior colliculus and the cerebellum might play a role in SWJ genesis.

The origin of faciobrachial dystonic seizures in anti-LGI1 encephalitis is controversial due to a lack of neurophysiological characterizatio … owed by oral and gestural automatisms with dystonic posturing of the upper limbs, compatible with a temporal lobe seizure. Brain MRI showed hyperintensity in the bilateral mesial temporal lobes, while 18FDG-PET revealed basal ganglia hypermetabolism with extensive cortical hypometabolism. Limbic encephalitis is a condition characterised by an acute or sub-acute onset of memory disorder, associated with seizures and psychiatric manifestations. Investigations such as brain MRI usually reveal a high intensity signal in the medial temporal lobe and cerebrospinal fluid analysis shows mild pleocytosis and oligoclonal bands. It may occur in association with cancer, infection, or as an isolated clinical condition, often accompanying autoimmune disorders. Immune-mediated limbic encephalitis is now subclassified according to the presence and type of autoantibodies, which has significant …

The human parahippocampal gyrus forms a large part of the limbic lobe along the ventromedial part of the temporal cortical mantle. It is a variable and complicated cortex in terms of structure, and the latter is aggravated further by interfaces with the anterior insula anteriorly and the cingulate gyrus and occipital lobe posteriorly. Additional complications relate to its lateral border with the temporal cortex and especially the sulcal configurations that define this junction. The rhinal sulcus, which separates parahippocampal and temporal cortices in other species, including the anthropoid

Nine cases of post-herpetic encephalitis with predominant involvement of one temporal lobe at CT scan or MRI (6 on the left and 3 on the right sides) were studied 1 to 6 years after onset with repeated language and memory testing. The neuropsychological findings were well correlated with the lateralization and size of the lesions, as previously observed in unilateral temporal lobectomy. Compared with the usual bilateral form, the sequelae were mild, and all the patients, especially those with right hemisphere involvement, resumed a subnormal family life or social activity. In patients with lef…

In recent years it has been shown that a disorder in recognizing familiar people can be observed in patients with lesions affecting the anterior parts of the temporal lobes and that these disorders can be multi-modal, simultaneously affecting the visual, auditory and linguistic channels that allow person identification. Several authors have also shown that patients with right anterior temporal atrophy are more impaired in assessing familiarity and in retrieving person-specific semantic information from faces than from names, whereas the opposite pattern of performance can be observed in patien…

Naming is considered a left hemisphere function that operates according to a posterior-anterior specificity gradient, with more fine-grained information processed in most anterior regions of the temporal lobe (ATL), including the temporal pole (TP). Word finding difficulties are typically assessed using visual confrontation naming tasks, and have been associated with selective damage to ATL resulting from different aetiologies. Nonetheless, the role of the ATL and, more specifically, of the TP in the naming network is not completely established. Most of the accumulated evidence is based on stu…

INTRODUCTION: Causes of brain abscesses are multiple and often unclear. We present the case of a pregnant woman who developed a temporal brain abscess revealed by an epileptic seizure.
OBSERVATION: Perfusion lung scan was performed because she had a mild hypoxemia: absence of contrast into the pulmonary arteries was suggestive of a massive intracardiac shunt or an anomalous drainage of the superior vena cava. Contrast-enhanced echography showed an abnormal drainage of the superior vena cava into the left atrium.
CONCLUSION: Although rare, this anomaly can exist in adults. This report emphasi
