Slow release of nitric oxide from charged catheters and its effect on biofilm formation by Escherichia coli.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection is the most prevalent cause of nosocomial infections. Bacteria associated with biofilm formation play a key role in the morbidity and pathogenesis of these infections. Nitric oxide (NO) is a naturally produced free radical with proven bactericidal effect. In this study, Foley urinary catheters were impregnated with gaseous NO. The catheters demonstrated slow release of nitric oxide over a 14-day period. The charged catheters were rendered antiseptic, and as such, were able to prevent bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on their luminal and e

A simple radiological technique for demonstration of incorrect positioning of a foley catheter with balloon inflated in the urethra of a male spinal cord injury patient.

In a male patient with cervical spinal cord injury, the urinary bladder may go into spasm when a urethral catheter is removed and a new Foley catheter is inserted. Before the balloon is inflated, the spastic bladder may push the Foley catheter out or the catheter may slip out of a small-capacity bladder. An inexperienced health professional may inflate the balloon of a Foley catheter in the urethra without realizing that the balloon segment of the catheter is lying in the urethra instead of the urinary bladder. When a Foley balloon is inflated in the urethra, a tetraplegic patient is likely to

The complications of urinary tract reconstruction.

We reviewed 56 patients who underwent urinary tract reconstruction between 1977 and 1984. There were 27 total complications in this group, which ranged from straightforward undiversion to total bladder replacement. Complications were divided into preoperative planning errors and errors of surgical technique. The patients at greatest risk seemed to be those with compromised renal function who previously had undergone diversion for severe obstructive uropathic conditions and those in whom bowel segment was an integral part of the reconstruction. Patients with adequate renal function in whom urot

Nitric oxide-releasing balloon inflation fluid for Foley catheters to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

UNLABELLED: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the most prevalent nosocomial infections. These infections impose a significant financial burden on the healthcare system and are responsible for approximately 15,000 deaths each year in the US. CAUTIs are caused by free-floating bacteria that adhere to the surface of Foley catheters and the patient's uroepithelium, forming protective biofilms that enhance bacterial survival and resistance. In this study, a nitric oxide (NO)-releasing liquid formulation is used to inflate the Foley catheter balloon, aiming to inhibit biofilm

Assessing safety and feasibility of monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate without post-operative catheter traction: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Traction on the per-urethral catheter is commonly employed after monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (mTURP) to reduce bleeding. However, its efficacy and impact on postoperative pain remain uncertain. Further, there is limited evidence to suggest any benefit regarding post-operative blood loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 62 patients undergoing mTURP were assigned to either a traction (n = 30) or non-traction (n = 32) group. Blood loss, postoperative pain, and analgesic requirements were assessed between January 2022 and April 2023. {(

A randomized, single-blind, multi-center clinical observational study of a new super lubricath coating catheter latex catheters using in urethral catheterization.

Polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) can be described as the main coating. After heating and curing, it is able to build a strong adhesion to the latex catheter for creating a durable and effective hydrophilic coating. In this study, we aim to explore the advantages and disadvantages of the new super lubricath latex catheter PVP coating compared with the common latex catheter. 148 patients who participated in the study were completely randomly divided into two groups, the observation group and the control group. When the urinary catheter was incubated, indwelling in subjects' body, and removed f

The Effect of Catheterization on Susceptibility of Uropathogens After Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether bacterial uropathogens from positive urine cultures and uropathogen antibiotic susceptibility differ between catheterized (C) and noncatheterized (NC) patients after pelvic reconstructive surgery. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with a positive urine culture within 1 year of pelvic reconstructive surgery. Patients were categorized as having an indwelling catheter placed for urinary retention or voiding dysfunction within 48 hours of specimen collection versus no catheter. Microbiology reports provided uropatho

External Female Urinary Catheter: Implementation in the Emergency Department.

The emergency department is a care environment in which indwelling urinary catheters are placed frequently; however, the significance of the role of the emergency department in catheter-associated urinary tract infection prevention has been overlooked. The use of an external female urinary catheter is an alternative to placing an indwelling urinary catheter for female patients in the emergency department who are incontinent of urine or are immobile. The purpose was to describe the implementation of an initiative to decrease the number of indwelling urinary catheters and increase the use of ext

Spontaneous prostatic haematoma in a case of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

A 61-year-old man presented with urinary retention with obstructive uropathy (urea/creatinine: 126/9.2 mg/dL) secondary to a large prostatic haematoma while being medically managed for benign enlargement of the prostate. The patient did not have any fever or local symptoms and the prostate was enlarged and non-tender on examination. Ultrasound and MRI of the pelvis showed a 9.4×10.4×11.1 cm sized prostatic haematoma seen displacing and compressing the urinary bladder anteriorly with bilateral hydroureteronephrosis. The patient was managed with per-urethral catheterisation, haemodialysis and in

A national UK audit of suprapubic catheter insertion practice and rate of bowel injury with comparison to a systematic review and meta-analysis of available research.

OBJECTIVES: Limited data exist on the risks of complications associated with a suprapubic catheter (SPC) insertion. Bowel injury (BI) is a well-recognized albeit uncommon complication. Guidelines on the insertion of SPC have been developed by the British Association of Urological Surgeons, but there remains little evidence regarding the incidence of this complication. This study uses contemporary UK data to assess the incidence of SPC insertion and the rate of BI and compares to a meta-analysis of available papers. METHODS: National Hospital Episodes Statistics data were searched on all SPC i
