Prevalence, resistance profile of ESKAPEE pathogens, and molecular detection of PMQR-associated genes among Levofloxacin-resistant gram-negative ESKAPEE isolates from critically-ill patients.

BACKGROUND: ESKAPEE pathogens are characterized with rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance. AIM: To detect the prevalence, resistance profile of ESKAPEE pathogens, and to analyze the Plasmid-Mediated Quinolone Resistance (PMQR)-associated genes among Levofloxacin-resistant gram-negative ESKAPEE pathogens isolated from critically ill patients in Fayoum University Hospitals, Egypt. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2021 to July 2022. Different specimens were collected and cultured on bacteriological media according to their respective sample sources. The identificat

Global epidemiological insights on the antimicrobial resistance of Enterococcus faecium and a genomic analysis framework.

Enterococcus faecium is a pathogen that frequently causes infections and outbreaks in hospitals. Despite the increasing need for genomic surveillance of E. faecium, a standardized genomic analysis framework for this pathogen is lacking. We aim to conduct a comprehensive global epidemiological overview and propose a genomic analysis framework. We analysed 21,058 public E. faecium genomes from 80 countries to create a comprehensive snapshot of E. faecium resistome and virulence in association with geography and population structure. We compared strain clustering based on SNP-based and sequence t

Ecological drivers and functional roles of phage communities in the Yangtze River's freshwater ecosystems.

The Yangtze River, China's largest and most significant freshwater system, is facing increasing pollution pressures due to rapid urbanizatio … ydrate-degrading enzymes (CAZy) were abundant in free-living setting water. Among phage-borne ARGs, vancomycin resistance was predominated, especially in sediment and bulk soil, while mercury resistance were most prevalent in sediments. Chitinase genes constituted the most abundant group among phage-encoded genes for plastic degradation. We identified 84 high-confidenc …

Emerging Insights into Corynebacterium Kroppenstedtii Complex Associated Breast Abscesses: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii complex (CKC), including C. kroppenstedtii, C. parakroppenstedtii, and C. pseudokroppenstedtii, has been implicated in breast abscesses and granulomatous mastitis, presenting diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Its lipophilic nature and association with specific populations necessitate targeted investigations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, including all CKC isolates from breast tissue collected between October 2016 and March 2024. Data from electronic medical records were colle

Virulence Signatures, Integrons, and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Bacterial Strains Recovered from Selected Commercial Dairy Products and Fresh Raw Meat.

Bacterial species responsible for food infections and intoxication are sometimes carried through the food production and processing. Very few published literatures exist on integrons among antibiotic-resistant staphylococcal strains from foods of animal origin in Gauteng Province, South Africa, hence this study. A total of 720 samples (360 meat and 360 dairies) from a community abattoir of a research farm in South Africa, using conventional bacteriological and molecular methods. Antibiotic Resistance Pattern in Pediatric Deep Neck Space Infection.

Introduction  Neck space infection in the pediatric age group is common but can be life-threatening if not diagnosed properly. Since it is a polymicrobial disease, antibiotic usage should be guided by culture sensitivity pattern. Objectives  To assess the microbiology, antibiotic resistance pattern and the outcome of the medical and surgical management of deep neck space infection in children. Methods  This was a prospective study of children admitted for management of neck space infection from August 2017 to August 2018. The age, gender, organisms isolated, sensitivity and resistance to antib

A potentially probiotic strain of Enterococcus faecalis from human milk that is avirulent, antibiotic sensitive, and nonbreaching of the gut barrier.

Human milk is a key source of promising probiotic lactic acid bacteria. The Enterococcus species, because of their dual commensal and pathogenic nature, demand critical safety analysis to establish them as probiotic candidates. In this study, eighteen E. faecalis strains from human milk of mothers living in Pakistan were typed at the strain level by riboprinting. The typed strains were then evaluated in vitro for physiological safety and the presence of transmissible antibiotic resistance genes, adhesion genes, biogenic amines, and virulence factors. Selected strains were then checked for tole

Whole genome sequence and comparative genome analyses of multi-resistant Staphylococcus warneri GD01 isolated from a diseased pig in China.

Staphylococcus warneri is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus that is a normal inhabitant of the skin. It is also considered to be an opportunistic etiological agent causing significant infections in human and animals. Currently, relatively little attention has been paid to the genome biology of S. warneri pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance, which are emerging issues for this etiological agent with considerably clinical significance. In this study, we determined the complete genome sequence of S. warneri strain GD01 recovered from the sampled muscle abscess tissue of a diseased pig in Sou

Drug-resistance dynamics of Staphylococcus aureus between 2008 and 2014 at a tertiary teaching hospital, Jiangxi Province, China.

BACKGROUND: To understand the relationship between the Staphylococcus aureus infection rate and the reasonable usage of antibiotics, which will help in the effective control of MRSA infection. METHODS: All data were obtained by the application of the nosocomial infection surveillance network. Drug resistance, departmental sources, and isolated sites as well as infection rate variations of S. aureus were analyzed in the 7-year period in key departments. RESULTS: Between 2008 and 2014, 2525 strains of S. aureus isolates, mainly from sputum, skin/soft tissue, bloodstreams were collected from se

First-year results of an antibiotic stewardship program in a Greek tertiary care hospital.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the implementation of an antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) on antibiotic consumption in our 428-bed hospital. The Infection Control Committee implemented an ASP beginning in January 2016, aiming to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use through improved prescribing practices. The ASP included both pre-authorization and prospective audit and feedback strategies. We collected pharmacy and hospital data for the years 2015 (pre-intervention) and 2016 (post-intervention). Consumption data were expressed as daily defined doses (DDDs) per 100 pat

Antimicrobial activity of nature-inspired molecules against multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Multidrug-resistant bacterial infections present a serious challenge to global health. In addition to the spread of antibiotic resistance, some bacteria can form persister cells which are tolerant to most antibiotics and can lead to treatment failure or relapse. In the present work, we report the discovery of a new class of small molecules with potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and moderate activity against Gram-negative drug-resistant bacterial pathogens. The lead compound SIMR 2404 had a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 μg/mL against methicillin-resistan

The Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group: Scientific Advancements and Future Directions.

In this overview, we describe important contributions from the Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group (ARLG) to patient care, clinical trials design, and mentorship while outlining future priorities. The ARLG research agenda is focused on 3 key areas: gram-positive infections, gram-negative infections, and diagnostics. The ARLG has developed an innovative approach to clinical trials design, the desirability of outcome ranking (DOOR), which uses an ordinal measure of global outcome to assess both benefits and harms. DOOR was initially applied to observational studies to determine optimal dos
