A rare tropical storm event drives partial nursery evacuation by juvenile white sharks, followed by rapid aggregation reformation.

Extreme weather events, such as tropical storms, can pose profound disruption to nearshore marine environments. Although coastal ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to storm impacts, research describing the response of marine taxa to extreme weather remains limited, especially for highly mobile marine predators. In this study, we use acoustic telemetry to investigate the behavioral responses of juvenile white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) at a Southern California nursery aggregation site to Tropical Storm Hilary in 2023. To aid in these efforts, we developed a novel occupancy modeling app

Developmental trajectories of isolation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations in rat pups exposed to early life stress.

Rodent infants emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) when separated from the nest, producing a communicative signal that elicits maternal care. These calls are considered as a sign of isolation distress, and call emission is acutely altered by stressful early life experiences. However, the selective developmental trajectory of these stress-induced USV alterations remains unknown and may have implications for neurodevelopmental processes underlying social dysfunction. Here, we employed a 3 h/day maternal separation (MS) procedure in Wistar rat pups (male and female) and recorded isolation-induce

Transient tumor perfusion loss: evaluating the spatial and temporal dynamics of blood flow changes induced by ultrasound cavitation treatments.

Ultrasound‑mediated microbubble cavitation can induce transient tumor perfusion loss (TTPL), yet the pressure‑dependent magnitude and short‑timescale recovery of this effect remains poorly defined. This study investigated how acoustic pressure governs both the extent and duration of TTPL following a single cavitation exposure. Subcutaneous hepatocellular carcinoma tumors (HEPG2 human cell line) in athymic nude mice (n = 15) received a 1‑second cavitation treatment at peak‑negative pressures of 1.4, 2.8, or 4.1 MPa. Due to the small f-number of the transducer employed, the estimated average pea

Quantitative Analysis of Flexor Tendon Gliding Sounds of the Hand in Healthy Volunteers Using a Digital Stethoscope.

BACKGROUND: Smooth flexor tendon gliding depends on the structural harmony between the flexor tendon and its sheath. Because tendon dimensions and joint kinematics differ among digits, gliding dynamics may also differ, but in vivo assessment during active motion remains limited. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether the acoustic characteristics of flexor tendon gliding sounds at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint differ among the index, middle, and ring fingers. METHODS: Gliding sounds were recorded from 40 hands of 20 healthy volunteers using a digital stethoscope placed at the p

Asymmetric Vibration Animal Phonation Model with A Reconstructive Curved and Medialized Titanium Implant Vocal Fold to Repair Defective Vocal Fold.

OBJECTIVE: Asymmetric vocal fold vibration caused by unilateral biomechanical alteration is common in laryngeal disorders and presents a challenge for functional reconstruction. This study aimed to investigate phonatory and vibratory outcomes in asymmetric glottic configurations reconstructed with materials of different stiffness. METHODS: Two asymmetric curved-surface (CS) vocal fold models were developed. A silicone-based single-layer model (Si-CS) and a titanium-based bi-layer model (Ti-CS) were constructed and compared with symmetric controls. Twenty-four excised canine larynges were used

Low-Frequency Components of the Heart Sound Corresponding to the Fourth Heart Sound Phase, Assessed by Phonocardiography, Correlate with Early Variations in Echocardiographic Indices Related to Diastolic Function.

Background and Objectives: The fourth heart sound (S4) is a recognized marker of left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction, suggesting a potential risk of congestive heart failure (CHF). However, low-frequency sounds are often audible during the S4-corresponding phase in the general population without symptoms or a history of CHF. The present retrospective cross-sectional exploratory study examined the acoustic features of the S4 phase sound in patients with stage A or B heart failure in association with echocardiographic markers. Materials and Methods: Sixty asymptomatic male patients under

BenSParX: A robust explainable machine learning framework for Parkinson's disease detection from Bengali conversational speech.

Parkinson's disease (PD) poses a growing global health challenge, with Bangladesh experiencing a notable rise in PD-related mortality. Early detection of PD remains particularly challenging in resource-constrained settings, where voice-based analysis has emerged as a promising non-invasive and cost-effective alternative. However, existing studies predominantly focus on English or other major languages; notably, no voice dataset for PD exists for Bengali - a language spoken by over 230 million people worldwide - posing a significant barrier to culturally inclusive and accessible healthcare solu

Effects of StereoBiCROS on Speech Understanding in Noise and Quality of Life for Asymmetric Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Background and Aim: Asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss is difficult to rehabilitate acoustically. Bilateral amplification may induce binaural interference, while CROS/BiCROS systems provide benefit only when the speech signal reaches the poorer ear. A hybrid approach combining CROS strategy with bilateral acoustic amplification, called Stereophonic Bilateral Contralateral Routing of Signal-StereoBiCROS-has recently emerged. Methods: A one-month home trial was conducted with hearing aids programmed in three listening modes: Stereophonic, BiCROS, and StereoBiCROS. Speech-in-noise perception w

Rhotic Acquisition Is More Rapid in Biofeedback Than Motor-Based Treatment for Residual Speech Sound Disorder: Primary Outcome of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) is a high-prevalence condition that can limit children's academic and social participation, with negative consequences for overall well-being. Previous studies have described visual biofeedback as a promising option for RSSD, but results have been inconclusive due to study design limitations and small sample sizes. METHOD: In a preregistered randomized controlled trial, 108 children aged 9-15 years with RSSD affecting American English /ɹ/ were randomly assigned to receive treatment incorporating visual biofeedback (subdivided into ultrasound and

Prosody matters: Preserved prominence marking strategies in people with Parkinson's disease independent of motor status.

While many studies focus on segmental variation in Parkinsonian speech, little is known about prosodic modulations reflecting the ability to adapt to communicative demands in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). This type of prosodic modulation is important for social interaction, and it involves modifications in speech melody (intonational level) and articulation of consonants and vowels (segmental level). The present study investigates phonetic cues of prosodic modulations with respect to different focus structures in mild dysarthric PwPD as a function of levodopa. Acoustic and kinematic

Sensing whales, storms, ships and earthquakes using an Arctic fibre optic cable.

Our oceans are critical to the health of our planet and its inhabitants. Increasing pressures on our marine environment are triggering an urgent need for continuous and comprehensive monitoring of the oceans and stressors, including anthropogenic activity. Current ocean observational systems are expensive and have limited temporal and spatial coverage. However, there exists a dense network of fibre-optic (FO) telecommunication cables, covering both deep ocean and coastal areas around the globe. FO cables have an untapped potential for advanced acoustic sensing that, with recent technological b

Comparative Effectiveness of Physical Therapy and Electrophysiotherapy for the Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis: A Network Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis is a common enthesopathy, possibly caused by overuse and repetitive activity. Although nonoperative management is the primary approach for treating lateral epicondylitis, clinical guidelines and the literature fail to identify the most effective nonoperative treatment. Therefore, the authors conducted a network meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of physical therapy and electrophysiotherapy treatments for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis. METHODS: The authors searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus for peer-reviewed randomized contro
