A 72-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to dysuria and frequent syncope. The patient had been well until the age of 70 years, when he began with these symptoms and neurogenic bladder was diagnosed in the other hospital. On admission, neurological examinations revealed no abnormal findings except blepharoptosis, anisocoria and orthostatic hypotension. Frequent apnea was evident during sleep. Autonomic function tests showed mainly sympathetic postganglionic dysfunction. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed lacunar infarctions without cerebello-pontine atrophy or abnormal signals of

1. Disturbances of the autonomic nervous system are common in right hemisphere stroke patients, including a marked decline in male sexual functions. There is a lack of information on the influence of stroke on male secondary sex organs such as the vas deferens. 2. This study investigates the effect of right brain focal ischaemia on the adrenergic and purinergic responses in isolated epididymal and prostatic portions of rat vas deferens. 3. In both epididymal and prostatic portions the concentration-response curves to noradrenaline are flattened resulting in a reduction (up to 67 - 76%) of the …

The most common forms of neurocristopathy in the autonomic nervous system are Hirschsprung disease (HSCR), resulting in congenital loss of enteric ganglia, and neuroblastoma (NB), childhood tumors originating from the sympathetic ganglia and adrenal medulla. The risk for these diseases dramatically increases in patients with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) harboring a nonpolyalanine repeat expansion mutation of the Paired-like homeobox 2b (PHOX2B) gene, but the molecular mechanism of pathogenesis remains unknown. We found that introducing nonpolyalanine repeat expansion muta…

Various functional abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system have been reported in symptomatic patients with mitral valve prolapse. It has also been suggested that mitral valve prolapse may be a component of a neurovascular endocrine abnormality and a marker for anxiety. Eleven consecutive patients with mitral valve prolapse (six men and five women), five of whom were asymptomatic, were studied. In comparison with 11 control subjects matched for age and sex who underwent 60-degree upright tilt, there was no significant difference between plasma norepinephrine levels, heart rate, and blood …

Introduction Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) has been studied in recent years as a novel off-label therapy for several conditions under the umbrella of dysautonomia, which is defined as disorders affecting the autonomic nervous system (ANS), including postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Naltrexone has a paradoxical pain-reducing effect in low doses due to transient opioid receptor blockage that increases compensatory endogenous opioid signaling. It is also thought that LDN may improve autonomic symptoms by reducing microglial activation via TLR-4 antagonism and subsequently counteract…

BACKGROUND: The correlation of the growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been reported in epidemiological studies. However, the mechanisms of molecular and inter-organ systems that render these factors to influence on NAFLD have not been elucidated. In this study, we examined the induction of ghrelin which is the GH-releasing hormone and IGF-1, and involvement of autonomic neural circuits, in the pathogenesis of NAFLD.
METHODS: The expression of gastric and hypothalamic ghrelin, neural activation in the brain, and serum

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects autonomic regulation and has emerged as a dual-use digital biomarker across clinical care and operational performance. We sought to integrate evidence on HRV’s physiological basis, clinical utility, defense applications, and AI-enabled analytics, and to propose a cross-sector framework for predictive, ethical deployment. METHODS: We conducted a structured literature review in MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, and Scopus between July 1st and August 31st, 2025, without language restriction. Eligible studies reported human HRV parameters measured in clini

PURPOSE: Postprandial hypotension (PPH) defined as a decrease in systolic blood pressure of more than 20 mmHg within 2 h post meal is prevalent in patients with autonomic failure and is associated with negative cardiovascular outcomes. Previous studies reported peripheral autonomic failure with less residual sympathetic tone in Parkinson disease (PD). Therefore, we hypothesized that PPH is more severe in PD than in multiple system atrophy (MSA) with central autonomic failure.
METHODS: Thirteen patients with PD and 13 patients with MSA were enrolled. Autonomic function testing and neurohormona

Motivated performance (MP) tasks include mental stressors characterized by a high degree of motivation, individual engagement, and sympathetic overstimulation. It is therefore important to document the independent influence of motivation apart from engagement on markers of cardiovascular autonomic modulation, including vasomotor tone (low-frequency systolic blood pressure, LFSBP), blood pressure homeostasis (baroreflex sensitivity, BRS), and myocardial oxygen consumption (rate pressure product, RPP). Accordingly, an arithmetic task (AT) was used to manipulate motivation to evaluate its impact

Rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) is an REM sleep parasomnia characterized by enactment of dream content during REM sleep associated with loss of muscle atonia. RBD can be either idiopathic or secondary to drugs or other diseases. The best recognized association is with neurodegenerative diseases, namely alpha-synucleinopathies. RBD may represent the first feature of neurodegeneration and can be considered an early marker of these disorders. This review describes the main clinical, pathogenetic, and therapeutic features of RBD, pointing to its association with neurodegene

Hypocretin (Hcrt) is a neurotransmitter of the dorsal and lateral hypothalamus that regulates sleep, appetite, and energy consumption. Recent evidence indicates that it is also involved in pleasure/reward-seeking. Mutation of the Hcrt-receptor gene causes narcolepsy in canines, and Hcrt knockout mice exhibit narcolepsy-like symptoms. Human narcoleptics do not commonly have mutations in the ligand or receptor but do have degeneration of Hcrt-containing neurons, possibly through an autoimmune mechanism. When Hcrt neurons degenerate in mice, hypophagia and obesity are observed, symptoms that are

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of repeated massage-like stroking on plasma levels of some gastrointestinal hormones, insulin included, glucose and weight gain. For this purpose, male rats were exposed to stroking on the ventral side of the abdomen for 3 or 14 times. The treatments were given every second day. Control rats were picked up at the same time but received no stroking. Body weight was measured regularly. Rats were decapitated 10 min after the last treatment. Hormone levels were radioimmunoassayed and glucose was measured by spectrophotometry. In rats expo

Night shift work has often been associated with increasing degree and frequency of various psychologic complaints. The study examined whether psychologic states after night work are related to adaptive alterations of the cardiovascular and neuroendocrine systems. We studied 18 healthy nurses (age 29+/-2 years) engaged in a modified rapid shift rotation system (day work, 8:15-17:15; evening work, 16:00-22:00; night work, 21:30-8:30). Blood pressure, heart rate, RR interval variability (L/H and HF power spectrum for sympathetic and vagal activities), and physical activity were measured using a m

Essential hyperhidrosis (EH) is caused by an unexplained overactivity of the sympathetic fibers which pass through the upper dorsal sympathetic ganglia D2 and D3. Since the D2 and D3 ganglia are also involved in the sympathetic cardiac innervation, cardiocirculatory autonomic function may also be abnormal in EH. In order to study the function of the sympathetic nervous system in EH, and to assess the effects of thoracoscopic sympathiocolysis, cardiocirculatory autonomic function tests were performed in 13 consecutive patients with EH, before (baseline) and 6 weeks after the thoracoscopic inter

Functional decrements in autonomic control and reflex activity in the elderly resemble the effects of beta-adrenoreceptor blockade. This arises partly from an age-related decrease in intrinsic beta-adrenoreceptor sensitivity and partly from effector changes associated with degenerative processes such as arteriosclerosis. In the elderly, compensatory adjustments in cardiovascular control result from both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction. The characteristics of aging in autonomic nervous control are examined in relation to the treatment of essential hypertension by beta blockers in th

To clarify the cause of gastrointestinal disorders in systemic amyloidosis we made pathologic and morphometric studies of vagus nerves, celiac ganglia, stomach and rectum in three autopsied cases with type 1 familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) and two with nonhereditary generalized amyloidosis (AL-amyloidosis). The gastric and rectal walls in all cases were affected in the same way by amyloid deposition. On the other hand, there was a great difference between the two diseases in the severity of vagus nerve and celiac ganglion lesions: the vagus nerves in FAP showed very extensive endoneurial

Exercise electrocardiography is a useful means to evaluate dysrhythmias in children and young adults. Exercise may suppress a dysrhythmia present at rest and thus suggest a relatively benign problem. It may provoke a latent dysrhythmia which is absent at rest but suggested by a history of exercise intolerance or palpitation with exertion. Exercise may also modify a dysrhythmia. Maximum exercise testing has been used to evaluate each of these situations in children. The results of testing will be presented. Since no dysrhythmias were provoked in 170 healthy children, we think that any dysrhythm
