Fractionation of rice straw lignin with choline chloride acidic deep eutectic solvents: Structural characterization and multifunctional functional properties.

Lignin is largely wasted agro-industrial aromatic biomass. Green deep eutectic solvents (DES) fractionation optimizes its UV-blocking, antioxidant and antibacterial performance, outperforming traditional alkali extraction. This study compares NaOH and four choline chloride acidic DES to reveal their regulation effects on rice straw lignin structure and functionalities. The recovered lignin fractions were characterized by elemental analysis (EA), FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) to evaluate their elemental composition, chemical structure, molecular weight distr…

Fishing and warming reshape size spectra of commercial species in the Mediterranean Sea.

Anthropogenic pressures, particularly high fishing effort and ocean warming are reshaping marine ecosystems and influencing the population d … est that the interactive effects of fishing and climate change could disproportionately reduce fish biomass, while taxa characterized by greater physiological and life-history plasticity may display comparatively higher resilience to environmental and anthropogenic disturbances. Our results emphasize the need for adaptive management strategies that incorp …

Highly dispersed La on biochar-based self-support framework for rapid and selective phosphate removal: Performance and mechanism.

Metal-doped biochar is a promising phosphate adsorbent for mitigating phosphate-driven eutrophication and valorizing biomass, but its adsorption performance, selectivity and stability are strongly governed by the biochar-metal structure. Herein, the biochar was embedded into carbon nanofiber' networks to construct a self-supporting biochar-carbon nanofiber framework (C-ACF). The C-ACF was first functionalized with an amine-rich HCCP-PEI polymer layer to obtain PCP@C-ACF, which was then used to anchor highly dispersed La species, yielding the performant La-loaded adsorbent PCP-La@C-ACF. Expecta…

Disease-stage-associated transcriptional responses underlying bacterial wilt resistance in tobacco cultivar Yunyan 87 caused by Ralstonia solanacearum.

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum severely limits tobacco production, yet the molecular basis of resistance to vascular wilt diseases remains poorly understood. We integrated field phenotyping, pathogen isolation, and transcriptomic analyses across different disease stages to investigate root responses of the resistant tobacco cultivar Yunyan 87 at healthy, moderately infected, and severely infected stages. Disease progression was accompanied by marked root biomass loss, with fresh and dry weights reduced by approximately 60% and 70%, respectively. Transcriptomic analyses identif…

Adaptive resistance to and intracellular bioaccumulation of potentially toxic metals in a plant growth-promoting Rhizobium tropici-like isolate: implications for phytoremediation.

The accumulation of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) poses a threat to the cellular integrity of soil microorganisms as well as ecological st … ups potentially involved in metal ion interactions. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed changes in biomass composition associated with metal exposure. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the isolate shows efficient adaptive and intracellular sequestration mechanisms for PTMs, although removal efficiency from the medium was limited. Nevertheless, the p …

Synergistic effect of naphthalene acetic acid and salicylic acid on the growth and tolerance mechanism of cucumber under salt stress.

High soil salinity significantly hampers plant growth and crop yield by disrupting metabolic functions and causing oxidative, osmotic, and ionic stress. This study investigated the combined effects of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and salicylic acid (SA) in reducing salt stress in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv. AR-8, filling a knowledge gap regarding multilateral plant growth regulator (PGR) interactions under saline conditions. Cucumber seedlings were subjected to 80 mM NaCl, with or without 200 ppm NAA and 300 ppm SA. Salt stress notably decreased seedling vigor, biomass, and chlorophyll …

Nitrogen Addition Regulates the Temperature Sensitivity of Soil Carbon Release via Microbial Properties.

The temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil carbon (C) release is a key parameter for evaluating soil C stability under climate warming, with … and 25°C. Both CO2 release and Q10 were strongly associated with bacterial and fungal diversity and biomass, as well as with the activities of key C- and N-cycling enzymes (e.g., β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase). However, the effects of N addition on CO2 release and Q10 were primarily mediated through both direct and indirec …

Multi-Subunit Engineering of Photorespiratory Glycine Decarboxylase Refines Photosynthesis, Growth and Metabolic Robustness of Arabidopsis.

Photorespiration secures oxygenic photosynthesis from metabolic constraints arising from the oxygenation reaction of Rubisco in today's oxygen-rich atmosphere. Beyond this protective function, it is vital for primary metabolism, cellular redox balance, and stomatal regulation. Importantly, photorespiration has emerged as a key target for improving CO2 assimilation and biomass production. Among proposed strategies, enhancing photorespiratory efficiency via upregulation of core enzymes has highlighted glycine decarboxylase (GDC) as a promising target, however, it remains unclear whether simultan…

Two Clones, Two Paths: divergent intrinsic xylem traits and hydraulic responses to prolonged drought in poplar.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts, challenging the growth, hydraulic function and survival of woody plants. Poplar is a fast-growing species widely cultivated for biomass and cellulose production, but it is also highly sensitive to water deficit, with substantial variation among species and clones. METHODS: This study compared the drought responses of two Populus×canadensis clones, 'Tucano' and 'San Martino', under gradually imposed, prolonged water stress. Physiological traits and intrinsic wood anatomical characteristics revealed diffe…

Organoid models through the lens of metabolomics: a systematic review of experimental applications and analytical approaches.

Organoid models have transformed experimental biology by enabling three-dimensional systems that recapitulate tissue architecture, cellular heterogeneity, and metabolic activity patterns more faithfully than conventional in vitro cultures. In parallel, metabolomics has emerged as a systems-level approach to interrogate the biochemical processes integrating genetic programs, environmental cues, and phenotypic outcomes. Despite this promise, the application of metabolomics to organoids remains analytically fragile, challenged by low sample biomass, complex extracellular matrices, heterogeneous c…

Identification and expression of the Glycyrrhiza uralensis GABA shunt gene family under drought and salt stress with exogenous GABA.

Glycyrrhiza sp. (licorice) is a high-value medicinal plant, which is primarily distributed in drought and salt environments. However, wild licorice resources are dwindling, and salt and drought stresses reduce biomass, hampering the licorice industry. As a signalling molecule, γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) regulates tolerance to various abiotic stresses. Therefore, we studied biochemical indicators and GABA shunt gene expression in G. uralensis under abiotic stress. For the first time, six GABA shunt genes were identified in G. uralensis genome, including three GuGADs, one GuGABP, one GuGABA-T, a…
