A range of volumetric and neurochemical analyses were carried out on the brains of 14 "moderate" drinkers. These data were compared with previous studies from controls and alcoholics. Volumetric measurements consistently suggest a loss of cerebral tissue although the differences were not statistically significant. Changes in the lipid and water content of the white matter were noted and the significance of these changes in relation to the pathogenesis of reversible brain shrinkage caused by alcohol abuse is discussed.

Local hyperthermia using 13.56-MHz radiofrequency (RF) capacitive heating was evaluated in 19 patients with malignant brain tumor. Intraoperative heating was performed in 4 patients. RF applicators were placed on the cerebral convexity and medial surface with the tumor between them. RF power was controlled so as to maintain the brain temperature below 40 degrees C. We determined the frequency of brain tumors in a series of 133 children (18 years of age or younger) with von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis who were patients at the Children's Hospital of Zurich from 1971 to 1987. Twenty-four patients (18%) were found to have intraorbital or intracranial tumors. A patient with spasms of the neck, occurring when he turned his head to the left, responded to treatment with benzhexol. Cerebral blood flow imaging demonstrated reduced uptake in the right corpus striatum compared with the left. The study demonstrates the presence of an abnormality in the basal ganglia; it also illustrates response to drug treatment. Cerebral blood flow imaging may be useful in the detection of basal ganglia abnormalities in spasmodic torticollis and assist in the selection of cases which should be targeted for treatment with drugs.

A case of necrotizing brain stem encephalitis due to listeria monocytogenes is described in a 48-year-old man who had brain stem encephalitis of complicated course and with selective destruction of the vasomotoric and respiratory centers. He developed that very rare Ondine's curse syndrome, being only able to breathe when awake. The literature on Ondine's curse and brain stem encephalitis due to LM is reviewed. Brain stem encephalitis has a mortality near 100%. The only treatment for Ondine's curse is lifelong artificial ventilation.

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) was performed in 45 patients with a manifest subclavian steal syndrome. After sulpiride (75 mg kg-1) administration, a significant increase in dopamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) occurred in the rat striatum. No attenuation in the sulpiride-induced dopamine and DOPAC increase was seen in the striatum from rats previously treated with benztropine (25 mg kg-1).
