Induction and Readout of Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy.

Ischemic retinal diseases can be caused by various pathologies, which often lead to formation of preretinal neovascularization. A very common and well-established model to study normal as well as pathological angiogenic mechanisms in retina is the oxygen-induced retinopathy model in mice. This model is based on oxygen exposure of mouse pups during retinal vascular development, leading to a depletion of retinal capillaries. Upon return to room air, the lack of retinal vasculature results in hypoxia, which in turn induces vascular repair and preretinal neovascularization. In this review, we will…

Concomitant subcutaneous intravascular lymphoma lesions in a patient with cardiac diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: is intravascular lymphoma a distinct clinical entity?

We describe a patient who presented with large cardiac diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and adrenal masses. The patient also had subcut … a peculiar feature of DLBCL characterised by preferential localisation of lymphoma cells within the capillaries rather than a distinct disease entity of DLBCL.

Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura in a Child Treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a thrombotic microangiopathy caused by deficiency of von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease ADAMTS13. Large von Willebrand multimer formation and intravascular platelet aggregation affecting the arterioles and capillaries can result in death unless early treatment is administered. We report on the case of a child with TTP associated with a human herpes virus type-6 infection occurring during chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia who was effectively treated by fresh frozen plasma infusions and antiviral therapy. Although rarely observed in c…

A rare case of diffuse alveolar hemorrhage following oral amphetamine intake.

Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a clinical syndrome, which refers to injury to the capillaries, arterioles and venules, leading to red blood cell accumulation in the distal air spaces. It is defined by the clinical triad of hemoptysis, anemia and progressive hypoxemia. Chest radiographs reveal non-specific patchy or diffuse bilateral pulmonary consolidation. Multiple conditions are associated with DAH, of which Wegener's granulomatosis is the most frequent, and underlying disease determines the prognosis and treatment. This case describes DAH as a result of oral amphetamine abuse in a you…

[Punctate maculae on the back of the hands of a 44-year-old woman].

A 44-year-old woman developed punctate erythematous maculae on the backs of her hands, arms and shoulders following a pregnancy. Laboratory evaluation was unremarkable. Our differential diagnosis includes idiopathic teleangiectases, teleangiectasia eruptiva perstans, angioma serpiginosum and angiokeratoma corporis diffusum Fabry. Microscopic examination showed increased numbers of the small vessels of the upper vascular plexus with dilated capillaries. This coupled with the clinical findings led us to the diagnosis of angioma serpiginosum with symmetrical distribution involving the shoulder gi…

Hypoxia and chronic lung disease.

The lung is both the conduit for oxygen uptake and is also affected by hypoxia and hypoxia signaling. Decreased ventilatory drive, airway obstructive processes, intra-alveolar exudates, septal thickening by edema, inflammation, fibrosis, or damage to alveolar capillaries will all interpose a significant and potentially life-threatening barrier to proper oxygenation, therefore enhancing the alveolar/arterial pO2 gradient. These processes result in decreased blood and tissue oxygenation. This review addresses the relationship of hypoxia with lung development and with lung diseases. We particular…

A case of Gorham's disease with chylothorax treated curatively with radiation therapy.

Gorham's disease, also known as vanishing bone disease or massive osteolysis, is a rare disorder of uncertain etiology. It is characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of vascular or lymphatic capillaries within bone, leading to resorption and replacement with angiomatous tissue. It can be complicated by chylous pericardial and pleural effusions, which can be life threatening. Patients are also at risk of mortality or serious morbidity due to bone destruction, especially when the disease involves the spine. We report the case of a 31-year-old female with Gorham's disease involving several bo…

Distribution of Trypanosoma congolense in infected multimammate rats (Mastomys coucha): light and electron microscopical studies.

In an attempt to determine whether Trypanosoma congolense occurs both within and outside the blood vessels in an infected animal host, multimammate rats (Mastomys coucha) were infected with T. congolense and samples from spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow, liver, kidney, lungs, brain, heart, intestines, ovaries and testes were collected. The tissue samples were fixed and processed for light and electron microscopical examination. In all the tissues examined, trypanosomes were found only within the lumen of large and small blood vessels, capillaries and sinuses. It is concluded that following ent…

Pulmonary sarcoidosis with associated bloody pleurisy.

A 64-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of non-productive cough and right chest pain. Chest radiographs showed bilateral … seous granulomas. Furthermore, some nodules were observed to compress and involve small vessels and capillaries. The bloody pleurisy was assumed to have been derived from the rupture of small vessels that had been compressed and affected by the granuloma with sarcoidosis.

Delayed treatment of frostbite injury with hyperbaric oxygen therapy: a case report.

The effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on skin microcirculation were evaluated by laser-Doppler flowmetry and vital capillary microscopy in a frostbite victim 2 wk after the injury. Laser-Doppler skin blood flow, measured in intact skin on the dorsum of the foot, decreased from 52 to 31 perfusion units during hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The number of visible nutritive capillaries in frostbitten areas on the toes increased from 2 to 12 per mm2, as measured immediately after the hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We conclude that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is capable of improving nutritive skin blood fl…

Transitional cell carcinoma manifesting as acute cor pulmonale: cause of microscopic tumor embolism.

Acute cor pulmonale is an uncommon manifestation of microscopic pulmonary tumor embolism. We describe the case of an 84-year-old man with a history of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder who had acute cor pulmonale and died within a few hours after the onset of dyspnea. Autopsy showed that the right ventricle was dilated without hypertrophy. Microscopic examination of the lung showed that the small arteries, arterioles, and capillaries were filled with micrometastases of TCC. Microscopic pulmonary tumor embolism has rarely been reported with TCC, and to the best of our kno…

[Kaposiform HHV-8 negative acroangiodermatitis in chronic venous insufficiency].

A 76-year-old female patient developed severe manifestations of a kaposi-like acroangiodermatitis (so-called Mali's disease) due to chronic venous insufficiency of the lower extremities. The patient presented with large areas of confluent, violaceous or brown-black papules on both lower legs. Histologically, proliferation of thick-walled capillaries was seen in the upper dermis consisting of fully differentiated endothelial cells, as shown by immunohistochemistry. In contrast to true Kaposi's sarcoma, human-herpes-virus-8 DNA could not be detected by polymerase-chain-reaction in this condition…
