Recent advances in psychedelic research have renewed interest in their therapeutic potential for psychiatric disorders characterized by cognitive and behavioral rigidity. This review examines the rationale for using serotonergic psychedelics-particularly 5-HT2A receptor agonists such as psilocybin-in the treatment of eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). The paper contextualizes these interventions within the broader serotonin hypothesis of EDs, emphasizing serotonergic dysregulation and impaired cognitive flexibility as

According to DSM 5, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable worry about various topics that occupies the majority of the subject's time for a period of at least six months. The aforementioned state causes distress and/or functional impairments. This paper presents the outcomes of a pilot study that evaluated the implementation of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and CBT with an SSRIs intervention program. The participants comprised 16 children and adolescents with GAD (8 males and 8 females) matched with 16 typically developing peers (8 males and 8 fe…

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI) are the global standard of care for the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and show significant positive effects in neurodegenerative diseases with cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Although experimental and large-scale clinical evidence indicates the potential long-term efficacy of ChEI, primary outcomes are generally heterogeneous across outpatient clinics and regional healthcare systems. Sub-optimal dosing or slow tapering, heterogeneous guidelines about the timing for therapy initiation (prodromal versus dementia stages), healthcare pr

The current paper describes a case series using a new strategy for facilitating change based on Augmentation of Psychotherapy through Alternative Preconscious Priming (APAP) (1) in the treatment of eight treatment-resistant patients suffering from social phobia or generalized anxiety disorder. The patients had previously only shown a partial response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) despite good treatment adherence. The patients completed APAP using a computerized program, which consisted of three steps during which alternative, more functional thoughts and beliefs relevant to the idiosyn…

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are age-related progressive neurodegenerative diseases of increasing prevalence worldwide. In the absence of curative therapy, current research is interested in prevention, by identifying subtle signs of early-stage neurodegeneration. Today, the field of behavioral neuroscience has emerged as one of the most promising areas of research on this topic. Recently, it has been shown that the exacerbation of gait disorders under dual-task conditions (i.e., simultaneous performance of cognitive and motor tasks) could be a characteristic feature of Alzheimer's and

Body image is multifaceted and incorporates perceptual, affective, and cognitive components as well as behavioral features. Only few studies have examined the character of body-image disturbance in children/adolescents with eating disorders. It is unknown whether body-image disturbances in children/adolescent with eating disturbances are comparable to those of adult patients with eating disorders. Body-image disturbance might differ quantitatively and qualitatively according to the cognitive developmental status and the age of the individual. This paper provides an overview of the current evid

Neurofibromatosis type 1, a common autosomal dominant genetic disorder, is associated with numerous physical and medical anomalies as well as an increased incidence of learning disability. Tumors of the central nervous system have been estimated to occur in 15%, but their contribution to neuropsychological status is unknown. This study examines the relative contribution of neurofibromatosis and brain tumor to the cognitive profile of children with neurofibromatosis. A comprehensive battery of neuropsychological and behavioral tests was administered to a group of 65 children with neurofibromato

BACKGROUND: Although pharmacotherapy is the primary treatment for patients with acute-phase panic disorder, its incomplete efficacy causes them to experience frequent panic attacks and severe anticipatory anxiety for a considerable period. A prescription-based mobile digital therapeutic (DTx) that integrates self-guided cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), real-time symptom management, and lifestyle tracking can be used as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy for these patients, helping them achieve rapid symptom recovery.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of this adjunctive DTx in…

Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience executive dysfunction that disrupts daily routines, occupational performance, and quality of life. Occupation-based interventions such as Cognitive-Functional Intervention for Adults (Cog-Fun-A) aim to address these challenges, yet little is known about variability in engagement and outcomes. This brief report describes three contrasting cases drawn from a Cog-Fun-A pilot study. Participants completed pre-post assessments including the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version, Canadian Occupationa

OBJECTIVE: Clinicians treating pediatric anxiety disorders have inadequate information to decide which evidence-based treatment should initiate care and what strategies to adopt when initial care proves to be insufficient. The authors sought to determine whether beginning treatment with fluoxetine or exposure-based CBT yielded better outcomes, and, if 3 months of treatment failed to produce remission, whether optimizing the initial treatment or adding the other treatment modality (combination therapy) yielded better outcomes.
METHODS: This 24-week single-blind sequential multiple assignment r

BACKGROUND: Treatment readiness factors, such as treatment credibility and expectancy, are postulated to be predictors of outcomes within the context of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Concentrated exposure therapy (cET) is a form of short-term, intensive, exposure-based CBT that has shown promising results. This study investigated whether treatment expectancy and credibility predict cET treatment outcomes in patients with difficult-to-treat (nonresponders and patients with relapse following CBT) obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
METHODS: A total of 163 patients underwent 4 days of cET…

INTRODUCTION: The bidirectional relationship between disease activity and mental health in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has prompted investigations into the efficacy of psychotherapeutic interventions such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on biopsychosocial outcomes. We aimed to examine the efficacy of an ACT program (intervention) in comparison with a cognitive behavioral therapy-informed psychoeducation program (active control) for individuals with IBD and coexistent psychological distress. Both programs were delivered online through a hybrid format (i.e., therapist-led and par…

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can be effective in the general population of people with schizophrenia. It is still unclear whether CBT can be effectively used in the population of people with a first-episode or recent-onset psychosis.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of adding cognitive behavioural therapy to standard care for people with a first-episode or recent-onset psychosis.
SEARCH METHODS: We conducted a systematic search on 6 March 2022 in the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's Study-Based Register of Trials, which is based on CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO

Veterans with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often face barriers to receiving evidence-based treatments such as exposure and response prevention (ERP). Through retrospective review of electronic medical records, this study examined the rates of ERP delivery in a national sample of 554 veterans newly diagnosed with OCD in the Veterans Health Administration between 2016 and 2017. Results indicated that only 4% of veterans (n = 22) received any ERP treatment; and, of those, 16 veterans received "true ERP." Veterans who received any ERP were younger than those who did not. ERP was primarily d
