Effect of guided dual-sensory information on motor learning outcomes based on spatiotemporal dimensions.

The effectiveness of instructional information is crucial to enhancing motor learning outcomes. However, few studies have explored the mechanisms of augmented attention-guiding dual-sensory information. Based on the spatiotemporal dimensions of movement staging and movement limb segments, the current study analyzed how guided dual-sensory information affects learning a basketball set shot. A teaching experiment involving 132 middle school students was used to analyze three instructional methods: visual-only (video), visual-auditory (video with narration), and guided dual-sensory information wi

Association of postmigration stressors and intolerance of uncertainty to posttraumatic stress disorder in asylum seekers: the moderating role of environmental sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Asylum seekers are frequently exposed to severe pre- and postmigration stressors that place them at elevated risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While much is known about trauma exposure, less research has examined how individual differences in environmental sensitivity-defined as heightened responsiveness to contextual influences-shape mental health outcomes in this population. This study explores how postmigration living difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty relate to specific PTSD symptom clusters, and whether environmental sensitivity moderates these associat

Is screening for Alzheimer's disease ready for prime time? Ask Wilson and Jungner.

Population screening is an effective strategy for disease prevention, early diagnosis and treatment; however, the benefits and harms of disease screening need to be carefully evaluated before clinical implementation. Various national and international bodies, including the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), periodically develop recommendations for screening after reviewing the available published evidence and, in some instances, expert opinions. In 1968, Wilson and Jungner formulated a set of 10 rules that must be considered and fulfilled before introducing screening for any disease

Dementia etiology classification using NULISA plasma biomarkers and machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate antemortem differentiation among dementia etiologies remains challenging, particularly for atypical or mixed clinical presentations. Multiplexed plasma proteomics paired with supervised machine-learning offers a minimally invasive and accessible approach for differential diagnosis. METHODS: Plasma from 194 participants was analyzed using the NULISA CNS 120+ plasma biomarker panel. Differentially abundant protein patterns associated with AD, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, Lewy body disease, and vascular disease were identified. These features were used to train super

Transfer of skills acquired through Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach in children with executive functions deficits following acquired brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Children with acquired brain injury (ABI) often have executive function (EF) deficits that affect their ability to carry out activities efficiently. Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is a cognitive approach to problem-solving. It has demonstrated effectiveness in a variety of populations, most recently with children with EF deficits following ABI. One of the challenges of rehabilitation is transferring skills acquired during sessions into everyday life. The literature suggests that CO-OP enables transfer of skills to untrained tasks, but research on

Development and content validation of a survey assessing domains of sexual and reproductive health in adults with spina bifida.

PurposeIndividuals with spina bifida (SB) often face substantial gaps in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge leading to low use of contraception, poor utilization of preventative sexual health care, unintended pregnancies, missed opportunities to pursue their SRH goals, and increased risk of abuse and coercion. Validated questionnaires are needed to reliably test and track the SRH and self-efficacy of adults with SB. This study aimed to develop a survey with content validity to assess five SRH domains in adults with SB.MethodsAn initial survey was informed by a targeted literature r

The mysterious sense of smell: evolution, historical perspectives, and neurological disorders.

Phylogenetically, the chemical sense of smell is the oldest of all sensory modalities in terrestrial and aquatic organisms. For most non-human species in the wild, it is essential like other senses for survival because it aids nutrition, detection of environmental threats, and mating. In contrast to other senses, olfaction holds some unique properties: vertebrates, humans, and other mammals can distinguish many thousands of different odors due to genetically determined specific odorant receptors which have a lifespan of about 1 month and then are continuously replaced by neuroneogenesis in the

Genetic and clinical correlates of two neuroanatomical AI dimensions in the Alzheimer's disease continuum.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with heterogeneous atrophy patterns. We employed a semi-supervised representation learning technique known as Surreal-GAN, through which we identified two latent dimensional representations of brain atrophy in symptomatic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD patients: the "diffuse-AD" (R1) dimension shows widespread brain atrophy, and the "MTL-AD" (R2) dimension displays focal medial temporal lobe (MTL) atrophy. Critically, only R2 was associated with widely known sporadic AD genetic risk factors (e.g., APOE ε4) in MCI and AD patients at baseline. We th

Perception of Social Odor and Gender-Related Differences Investigated Through the Use of Transfer Entropy and Embodied Medium.

The perception of putative pheromones or social odors (PPSO) in humans is a widely debated topic because the published results seem ambiguous. Our research aimed to evaluate how cross-modal processing of PPSO and gender voice can affect the behavioral and psychophysiological states of the subject during a listening task with a bodily contact medium, and how these effects could be gender related. Before the experimental session, three embodied media, were exposed to volatilized estratetraenol (Estr), 5α-androst-16-en-3 α-ol (Andr), and Vaseline oil. The experimental session consisted in listeni

Feasibility and initial efficacy of a high-intensity interval training program using adaptive equipment in persons with multiple sclerosis who have walking disability: study protocol for a single-group, feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable evidence for the efficacy of moderate-intensity continuous exercise benefitting clinically relevant outcomes in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, persons with MS who have walking disability (pwMS-wd) are severely deconditioned and may achieve superior benefits by engaging in high-intensity interval training (HIIT), especially while utilizing adaptive equipment, such as recumbent arm/leg stepping (RSTEP). The proposed study will assess the feasibility of a 12-week, RSTEP HIIT program in pwMS-wd. The secondary aim will examine changes in aerobic fit

Sleeping sound with autism spectrum disorder (ASD): study protocol for an efficacy randomised controlled trial of a tailored brief behavioural sleep intervention for ASD.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep problems are a characteristic feature of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with 40% to 80% of children experiencing sleep difficulties. Sleep problems have been found to have a pervasive impact on a child's socio-emotional functioning, as well as on parents' psychological functioning. The Sleeping Sound ASD project aims to evaluate the efficacy of a brief behavioural sleep intervention in reducing ASD children's sleep problems in a fully powered randomised controlled trial (RCT). Intervention impact on child and family functioning is also assessed. METHODS AND A

Neuroimaging, genetic, clinical, and demographic predictors of treatment response in patients with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Correct prediction of treatment response is a central goal of precision psychiatry. Here, we tested the predictive accuracy of a variety of pre-treatment patient characteristics, including clinical, demographic, molecular genetic, and neuroimaging markers, for treatment response in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: Forty-seven SAD patients (mean±SD age 33.9 ± 9.4 years, 24 women) were randomized and commenced 9 weeks' Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) combined either with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram (20 mg da

Alzheimer's disease diagnosis based on multiple cluster dense convolutional networks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder with progressive impairment of memory and cognitive functions. Structural magnetic resonance images (MRI) play important role to evaluate the brain anatomical changes for AD Diagnosis. Machine learning technologies have been widely studied on MRI computation and analysis for quantitative evaluation and computer-aided-diagnosis of AD. Most existing methods extract the hand-craft features after image processing such as registration and segmentation, and then train a classifier to distinguish AD subjects from other groups. Mot

Cognitive processes involved in smooth pursuit eye movements: behavioral evidence, neural substrate and clinical correlation.

Smooth-pursuit eye movements allow primates to track moving objects. Efficient pursuit requires appropriate target selection and predictive compensation for inherent processing delays. Prediction depends on expectation of future object motion, storage of motion information and use of extra-retinal mechanisms in addition to visual feedback. We present behavioral evidence of how cognitive processes are involved in predictive pursuit in normal humans and then describe neuronal responses in monkeys and behavioral responses in patients using a new technique to test these cognitive controls. The new

Social anxiety in childhood: the relationship with self and observer rated social skills.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety of childhood is a common and pervasive problem. Traditional approaches to treating these difficulties have focused on providing afflicted children with social skills training. This approach has met with some, but not complete success. Recent reconceptualisations of social anxiety in the adult literature have emphasised the role of negative cognition regarding one's own social skills. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that a misperception of social skills, rather than a skills deficit per se, may be most pertinent to the understanding of social anxiety. This stud

Predictive Factors of Augmented Reality-Based Clinical Task Performance Among Novice Users: Cross-Sectional Quantitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Augmented reality (AR) can provide risk-free training for medical trainees, yet little is known about which learner characteristics facilitate adoption or inform training design. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify which learner characteristics predict AR performance in novices. We hypothesized that higher visuospatial ability and greater video game experience would be associated with faster completion times and fewer errors. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 21 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students (median age 22, IQR 21-24 years) without previous AR experience were re
