Over a 16 month period we conducted a prospective study in a cohort of 45 HIV-positive patients to detect the development of resistance to fluconazole and to analyse the epidemiology of oropharyngeal candidosis (OPC). In the 1960s, almost all patients who developed gram-negative bacteremia during granulocytopenia died; death occurred before blood culture results were available in about 50% of cases; many patients received antibiotics that were, at best, suboptimal and frequently inactive against the invading pathogen. AIM: The objectives of this study were 1) to clarify the physiologic regulation of cytokines such as IL-6, G-CSF and GM-CSF in preterm and term neonates and 2) to evaluate the influence of perinatal stress and infection on endogenous cytokine levels.
