Latex hypersensitivity: a closer look at considerations for dentistry.

Over the past several decades, latex hypersensitivity has become an increasingly common phenomenon in the dental setting. Exposure to latex via direct skin contact or inhalation of airborne allergens from powdered gloves poses the risk of sensitizing both clinicians and their patients. Adverse reactions to latex range from mild irritant contact dermatitis to potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity. The prevalence of these reactions is higher among medical and dental practitioners, those with prior allergies, patients with a history of multiple surgeries and those with spina bifida. The r

Investigating the course of atopic eczema up to 1 year following completion of narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy.

BACKGROUND: Narrowband (NB)-ultraviolet B (UVB) is a second-line treatment for chronic moderate-to-severe atopic eczema unresponsive to adequate topical therapy, and is known to induce good short-term improvement of eczema severity. However, it is unclear how adult patients fare with their eczema severity long after completion of a course of NB-UVB. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the severity of atopic eczema in adults, 1 year following completion of NB-UVB, using validated clinical activity measures. METHODS: We undertook a multicentre prospective observational study of adults with moderate-to-

[FK 506 ointment 0.1 % - A new therapeutic option for atopic blepharitis. Clinical trial with 14 patients].

BACKGROUND: Severe atopic blepharitis is difficult to treat, as topical steroids offer only a limited therapeutic benefit with increasing side effects by time. Topical FK 506 was found to be efficient and safe for treatment of atopic dermatitis in dermatologic studies. The use of topical FK 506 in atopic blepharitis has not been reported so far. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with severe atopic blepharitis were treated with topical FK 506 0.1 %. The ointment was applied twice daily on the eye lids. Ophthalmologic examinations were scheduled at two weeks, two months and five months af

A year in review: new treatments and expanded indications in dermatology in 2024.

METHODS: A literature search was conducted on Drugs@FDA: FDA-Approved Drugs for the year 2024 to identify new dermatologic treatments. RESULTS: In 2024, the FDA approved seven new dermatologic therapies and expanded the indications for seven current therapies. These therapies treat conditions such as atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, prurigo nodularis, molluscum contagiosum, and alopecia areata, among others. Some of these advancements converge dermatology with rheumatology, gastroenterology, and oncology, which continue to transform therapy for patients with multiple diseases. CO

Medically Refractory Lymphocytic Colitis Successfully Treated With Upadacitinib.

Lymphocytic colitis is a microscopic colitis characterized endoscopically by nearly normal-appearing colonic mucosa and histology demonstrating intraepithelial lymphocytosis. Microscopic colitis that is refractory to conventional therapies, including budesonide, is rare but challenging and with scarce evidence. Upadacitinib is a novel Janus kinase 1 selective inhibitor approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for atopic dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. We present the first case of lymphoc

Tofacitinib in paediatric dermatoses: a narrative review.

Tofacitinib has revolutionized the treatment of numerous dermatological conditions in different age groups. However, evidence for its effectiveness, safety and tolerability in the paediatric population is limited. We performed a literature search, which showed that oral tofacitinib is a reliable option in refractory juvenile dermatomyositis, severe alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Topical tofacitinib is an effective option in vitiligo and halo naevus. The risk-benefit ratio should be assessed prior to consideration of this molecule. In this narrative review, we have attempted

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the course and management of chronic inflammatory immune-mediated skin diseases: What's the evidence?

Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, medical professionals have been overwhelmed by questions beyond the infection itself. In dermatology practice, clinicians have been facing difficulties about the management of chronic immune-mediated skin diseases. Issues arose, such as the grade of immunosuppression or immunomodulation, discontinuation or modification of treatment, and initiation of new treatments. In this comprehensive review, we present the current evidence about the course and management of chronic inflammatory dermatoses during the COVID-19 pandemic,

Crusted Scabies Complicated with Herpes Simplex and Sepsis.

Crusted scabies is a rare and extremely contagious infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei. Kaposi's varicelliform eruption (KVE) refers to herpes simplex virus infection superimposed on pre-existing dermatosis such as atopic dermatitis, Darier's disease, and pemphigus. We report a case of KVE superimposed on crusted scabies in a middle-aged woman. Her condition was complicated with sepsis. She was treated with IV meropenem, vancomycin, and acyclovir and was released 2 weeks later in good condition. To our knowledge, only rare cases of crusted scabies complicated by KVE have been reported.

The potential role of cannabinoids in dermatology.

Cannabis is increasingly being used world-wide to treat a variety of dermatological conditions. Medicinal cannabis is currently legalized in Canada, 31 states in America and 19 countries in Europe. The authors reviewed the literature on the pharmacology and use of cannabinoids in treating a variety of skin conditions including acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, skin cancer, pruritus, and pain. Cannabinoids have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, anti-ageing, and antimalignancy properties by various mechanisms including interacting with the newly found endocannabinoid system of the

Drugs on the Horizon for Chronic Pruritus.

Chronic pruritus is a common condition that has a detrimental impact on quality of life. As the molecular pathogenesis of itch is elucidated, novel therapies that disrupt itch pathways are being investigated. Emerging treatments include drugs targeting the neural system, drugs targeting the immune system, antihistamines, bile acid transport inhibitors, and topical drugs that work through a variety of mechanisms such as phosphodiesterase-4 inhibition or targeting of nerve ion channels. Many of these therapies show promising results in the treatment of chronic itch of various etiologies, such as

Inflammatory Disorders Associated with Allergy: Overview of Immunopathogenesis and Implications for Treatment.

A number of chronic inflammatory diseases are associated with IgE-mediated immunologic hypersensitivity, including atopic dermatitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, and asthma. Pathogenetic studies of well-characterized patient groups has allowed investigators to more precisely define the molecular pathways involved in these diseases. Specific cytokines and chemokines, as well as other unique proteins, have now been identified in each of these common disorders and a number of medications are currently in development for inhibiting their actions. Continual refinement of our understanding of the pathog

Incontinentia Pigmenti Coxsackium.

Late recurrences of first-stage inflammatory vesiculobullous lesions of incontinentia pigmenti (IP) are uncommon but have been reported to occur in the setting of infections, fevers, and vaccinations. This phenomenon has not been described in the setting of atypical hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). In addition, atypical HFMD often has a predilection for areas of previous inflammation or trauma, such as areas of atopic dermatitis (eczema coxsackium). We present a case of incontinentia pigmenti coxsackium in which a coxsackievirus infection triggered reactivation of IP and cutaneous viral l

Role of oral Polypodium leucotomos extract in dermatologic diseases: a review of the literature.

Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE), derived from the tropical fern of Polypodiaceae family, has properties ranging from immunomodulatory and antioxidative to photoprotective. It is these multiple mechanisms of action, in combination with a favorable side effect profile, which makes PLE a promising adjunctive treatment for several dermatologic disorders. Studies are summarized on the use and potential applications of PLE in the treatment or management of photodermatoses, vitiligo, melasma, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and more recently, in minimizing infections in high-performance athletes. Quality of life in pediatric dermatology.

Skin disease is highly prevalent in the United States, and it has been well-documented that patients with skin disease experience financial, psychological, social, and quality-of-life (QoL) burdens beyond those of the general population. Pediatric patients and their caregivers are particularly vulnerable to the burden of skin disease. Over the past decade disease-specific indices for QoL measurement in pediatric dermatology have been developed. Most of this research has focused on acne, atopic dermatitis, hemangiomas, ichythosis, psoriasis, and vitiligo. This article provides an overview of Qo

Egg allergy: an update.

Egg allergy is the commonest infant food allergy both in Australia and world-wide. The clinical presentation of egg allergy is varied - egg is involved in both IgE and non-IgE-mediated allergic reactions and has been implicated in conditions such as anaphylaxis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, atopic dermatitis and eosinophilic oesophagitis. The clinical presentation, pathophysiology and diagnosis as well as the natural history and management of egg allergy will be discussed. Current theories about primary prevention as well as potential future therapies are presented. Finally, pr
