Liver as a nexus of daily metabolic cross talk.

Over the course of a day, the circadian clock promotes a homeostatic balance between energy intake and energy expenditure by aligning metabolism with nutrient availability. In mammals, this process is driven by central clocks in the brain that control feeding behavior, the peripheral nervous system, and humoral outputs, as well as by peripheral clocks in non-brain tissues that regulate gene expression locally. Circadian organization of metabolism is critical, as circadian disruption is associated with increased risk of metabolic disease. Emerging evidence shows that circadian metabolism hinges…

First Report of Metadelphax propinqua (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) Feeding on Bermudagrass in Brazil.

Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., Poaceae) is one of the most important pasture grasses used in milk production systems in southern Brazil, with an increasing expansion of cultivated areas in recent years. Here, we report the first occurrence of the planthopper Metadelphax propinqua (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) feeding on bermudagrass in Brazil. Population outbreaks of this species were observed in January/February 2023 in a commercial hay production farm in the municipality of Chapecó, Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. Metadelphax propinqua was found in association with thr

Peripheral and central control of obesity by primary cilia.

Primary cilia are hair-like structures that protrude from the cell surface. They are capable of sensing external cues and conveying a vast a … gulation of obesity, especially the involvement of ciliary signaling in the hypothalamic control of feeding behavior. This review therefore proposes a framework of both peripheral and central regulation of obesity by primary cilia, which may benefit further exploration of the ciliary role in metabolic regulation.

Recent Advances in Understanding Peripheral Taste Decoding I: 2010 to 2020.

Taste sensation is the gatekeeper for direct decisions on feeding behavior and evaluating the quality of food. Nutritious and beneficial substances such as sugars and amino acids are represented by sweet and umami tastes, respectively, whereas noxious substances and toxins by bitter or sour tastes. Essential electrolytes including Na+ and other ions are recognized by the salty taste. Gustatory information is initially generated by taste buds in the oral cavity, projected into the central nervous system, and finally processed to provide input signals for food recognition, regulation of metaboli…

Changes in hypopharyngeal glands of nurse bees (Apis mellifera) induced by pollen-containing sublethal doses of the herbicide Roundup®.

Decreasing pollinator populations worldwide has generated great concern and stimulated countless studies to understand the origin of colony losses. One main cause is the indiscriminate use of different pesticides, producing subtle negative effects on bee physiology and behavior. Royal jelly synthesized in the hypopharyngeal glands is an essential protein for feeding all individuals of the hive, especially the queen. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of sublethal concentrations of Roundup® on the hypopharyngeal glands of nursing workers, including its interference with

Neurobehavioral determinants of nutritional security in fetal growth-restricted individuals.

Fetal growth restriction results from a failure to achieve a higher growth potential and has been associated with many maternal conditions, … long term. Recently, mounting evidence has shown that fetal growth impairment is related to altered feeding behavior and preferences through the life course. When living in countries undergoing nutritional transition, in which individuals experience the coexistence of underweight and overweight problems (the "double burden of malnutrition"), fetal growth-restricte …

Action of a serotonergic anorectic in meal-fed mice working for food.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a serotonergic anorectic agent, dexnorfenfluramine (DNOR), on food intake in mice whose meals were constrained to specified periods each day and by effort. Mice were forced to adopt a human-like pattern of regular meals by making food available for four periods of 40 min/24-h period, mostly at night. They lived in behavior test chambers with a closed economy for food and were required to emit a fixed unit price (FUP) of either 2 or 25 nose pokes (FUP2, FUP25) to receive a 20 mg pellet of food. Once responding and intake were stable, mice were

Common humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) sound types for passive acoustic monitoring.

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are one of several baleen whale species in the Northwest Atlantic that coexist with vessel traffic and anthropogenic noise. Passive acoustic monitoring strategies can be used in conservation management, but the first step toward understanding the acoustic behavior of a species is a good description of its acoustic repertoire. Digital acoustic tags (DTAGs) were placed on humpback whales in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to record and describe the non-song sounds being produced in conjunction with foraging activities. Peak frequencies of so

Volatiles from a mite-infested spruce clone and their effects on pine weevil behavior.

Induced responses by Norway spruce (Picea abies) seedlings to feeding damage by two mite species were studied by analyzing the volatiles emitted during infestation. Four specimens of a Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) clone were infested with mites of Nalepella sp., another four with Oligonychus ununguis, and four were kept mite-free as controls. After a year of infestation, spruce volatiles were collected, analyzed, and identified using SPME-GC-MS. In addition, enantiomers of chiral limonene and linalool were separated by two-dimensional GC. Chemical signals associated with life inhibit necrophoresis in Argentine ants.

One of the most conspicuous and stereotyped activities of social insects such as ants and honey bees is necrophoresis, the removal of dead colony members from the nest. Previous researchers suggested that decomposition products such as fatty acids trigger necrophoric behavior by ant workers. However, fatty acids elicit both foraging and necrophoric responses, depending on the current nest activities (e.g., feeding or nest maintenance). Furthermore, workers often carry even freshly killed workers (dead for <1 h) to refuse piles before significant decomposition has a chance to occur. Here, we sh

The 3111T/C polymorphism of the CLOCK gene confers a predisposition to a lifetime lower body weight in patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: a preliminary study.

Feeding is subjected to circadian regulation; therefore, changes in the components of the endogenous oscillator regulating circadian rhythms may be involved in disordered rhythmicity of eating behavior as it occurs in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). We investigated whether the 3111T/C polymorphism of the CLOCK gene, which is part of the endogenous oscillator system, was associated to AN and/or BN. A total of 241 women, including 90 healthy controls, 60 patients with AN and 91 patients with BN, participated into the study. The frequencies of 3111T/C genotypes and alleles did not

Restoration of hypothalamic lipid sensing normalizes energy and glucose homeostasis in overfed rats.

Short-term overfeeding blunts the central effects of fatty acids on food intake and glucose production. This acquired defect in nutrient sen … Inhibition of CPT1A activity normalized the hypothalamic levels of LCFA-CoAs and markedly inhibited feeding behavior and hepatic glucose fluxes in overfed rats. Thus central inhibition of lipid oxidation is sufficient to restore hypothalamic lipid sensing as well as glucose and energy homeostasis in this model and may be an effective approach to the treatment of d …

Cloning and characterization of trypsin- and chymotrypsin-like proteases from the midgut of the sand fly vector Phlebotomus papatasi.

Trypsin and chymotrypsin serine proteases are the main digestive proteases in Diptera midguts and are also involved in many aspects of the vector-parasite relationship. In sand flies, these proteases have been shown to be a potential barrier to Leishmania growth and development within the midgut. Here we describe the sequence and partial characterization of six Phlebotomus papatasi midgut serine proteases: two chymotrypsin-like (Ppchym1 and Ppchym2) and four trypsin-like (Pptryp1-Pptryp4). All six enzymes show structural features typical to each type, including the histidine, aspartic acid, an

Food deprivation and food-delay effects on the development of adjunctive drinking.

Twelve rats were food-deprived to 90% or 70% of their free-feeding weights. Food pellets were then delivered every 60 s (Fixed Time 60-s schedule), and the development of adjunctive drinking was measured by the water consumed and the number of licks. For "master" rats, each lick was followed by 10-s delays in food delivery. Yoked control rats received food at the same time as their master rats and independently of their own behavior. At 70% deprivation, both master and control rats developed similar levels of schedule-induced licking, but the master rats drank less water. At 90% deprivation, m
