Iohexol, a nonionic compound used as a contrast medium for angiography and as a measure of the glomerular filtration rate, was quantified in serum by capillary electrophoresis. Comparable results were obtained for serum samples deproteinized with acetonitrile or analyzed directly after 50-fold dilution with borate buffer. Serum samples were electrophoresed for 2.6 min at 12 kV in a borate buffer with detection at 254 nm and with 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine as internal standard. The 13th edition of the standards of the American Association of Blood Banks specified storage at 1 to 6 degrees C for cryoprecipitated anti-hemophilic factor (Cryo) administered up to 6 hours after thawing if the Cryo is used for factor VIII (FVIII) content (Standard J4.210). Previous editions specified room-temperature (RT) storage for up to 6 hours. Currently, the temperature specification has been deleted. There are few data addressing the optimal storage temperature and maximum storage time for FVIII and fibrinogen in thawed Cryo. Thirty bags of Cryo were assayed for FVIII and fibrinogen.

To determine the biocompatibility and thrombogenicity of nitinol blood clot filters, we inserted 27 nitinol wire devices into the venae cavae of 16 dogs and one sheep and studied the results angiographically and at autopsy after periods of one week to four years. A series of 89 adult-onset nephrotic patients with minimal changes on renal biopsy was analyzed to compare the rate of response to corticosteroids and cytotoxic agents and the stability of remission or frequency of relapses at different ages. We describe a double-antibody enzyme immunoassay for determination of free thyroxin (FT4) in dried blood samples on filter paper, with use of a T4-beta-D-galactosidase complex. The measurable range of FT4 concentration in two 3-mm blood discs, each of which contained about 2.7 microL of blood, was 1.9 to 93 ng/L, as determined by comparison with concentrations of FT4 in known serum standards. FT4 in blood samples dried on filter paper was stable for at least four weeks when kept dry at -20 degrees C, room temperature, or 37 degrees C. Thirteen unselected children with the minimal change nephrotic syndrome were followed for 11 months-7.5 years, during which time 32 renal function tests were performed. Patients who are bedridden because of debilitating illness and patients who are recovering from major surgery are at particularly high risk of deep venous thrombosis and subsequent pulmonary embolism. "Mini-dose" heparin therapy has proved useful in preventing deep venous thrombosis. Because the clinical signs of pulmonary embolism are nonspecific, the patient's condition may deteriorate before the diagnosis is suspected. Ventilation and perfusion scans or pulmonary angiography confirm the diagnosis. Heparin continues to be the mainstay of therapy for pulmonary embolism.
