[Frontotransversal gunshot through both orbits leading to destruction of the bulbs in a case of attempted suicide (author's transl)].

In a case of attempted suicide a frontotransversal gunshot through both orbits led to symmetrical destruction of the bulbs and orbits. Examination revealed a rupture of both bulbs, fractures of the orbital roofs and floors, and destruction of the os ethmoidale. In the frontal cortex we found focal contusions. The physical effect of the gunshot on one hand, and the special anatomical relations of the orbit on the other, explain the serious consequences of orbital gunshot damages.

First autopsy report of a multiple sclerosis case in Hokuriku District of Japan.

The first autopsy of a case of multiple sclerosis from the District of Hokuriku was reported. The patient, a 50-year-old house-wife, born in Toyama Prefecture, had noticed a paresthesia of her face, fatigue, numbness and weakness in the right limbs, dimness of vision and gait disturbance at ave 44. Furthermore, in the course of the disease, she had suffered from visual disorder, tetraplegia, hyperreflexia, pyramidal signs and cerebellar syndroms such as dysarthria, nystagmus, intention tremor and ataxia. She also showed symptoms of euphoria and dementia. After a course of six years she died of

Psychomotor seizures, arterio-venous malformation and the olfactory reference syndrome. A case report.

A case history is reported of a 44-year-old man with a 6-year history of psychomotor seizures. For the past year he had described persistent olfactory hallucinations of an unpleasant nature which he referred to himself. In many respects these symptoms conform to the pattern observed in the olfactory reference syndrome, a recently described but apparently quite discrete psychiatric disorder; there were, however, certain atypical features. At a later stage unilateral anosmia was noted. Radiological examination then demonstrated an arterio-venous malformation in the right frontal lobe. The relati…

Pigment variant of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (Kufs' disease).

A case of pigment variant of Kufs' disease is presented. The nature of the extra-neuronal pigment is discussed. Despite some of the histochemical discrepancies that existed between this pigment and the material that had accumulated in the nerve cells, they seemed to be ultrastructurally related. The hepatocytes contained numerous heterogeneous cytosomes, some of which resembled the storage material of Niemann-Pick's disease. Clinically the syndrome may present with progressive ataxia, spontaneous and reflex, coarse myoclonic jerks and eventual mental deterioration as well as epilepsy and muscl

[A case of neuro-Behcet's syndrome in a woman (author's transl)].

An autopsy case of Neuro-Behçet's syndrome is reported with review of the previous 13 cases. A 48-year-old woman who had recurrent oral aphthae and genital ulcers beginning at the age of 27 years suddenly developed several neurological symptoms including headache, paraplegia and disturbance of speech. She died of septicemia due to the urinary infection 22 years after the appearance of the first symptoms and one year after the neurological manifestation. Autopsy revealed a marked atrophy of the frontal lobes of the cerebral hemispheres. Microscopic changes in the central nervous system were con…

Does the brain prefer geometrical homogeneity?

Some patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) have shown the development of painting or musical abilities after the onset of the disease. In this report, we present another emergent ability. A female patient with FTLD showing dense atrophy of the bilateral anterior lobes and a loss of voluntary activity in aspects of daily living, presented with the characteristic behaviours when given a paper and a pair of scissors. When a shape was already drawn on the paper, she showed reasonable skills with the scissors, cutting without any hesitation. When she cut a blank piece of paper, she

c-fos expression in brains of patients with Down syndrome.

c-fos is a protooncogene serving in multiple physiological processes in brain from signalling to proliferation and synaptic plasticity. We therefore decided to determine this transcription factor in control and Down Syndrome (DS) brain with the Rationale that c-fos may be linked to brain damage in DS. We determined mRNA steady state levels in frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal cortex and cerebellum of 9 patients with DS and 9 controls using RT-PCT. Significantly increased levels of mRNA c-fos normalized versus the housekeeping gene beta-actin mRNA were found in frontal, parietal and tempor

Proprioceptive Stimuli as a Trigger for Leucine-Rich Glioma-Inactivated-1 (LGI1) IgG Associated Autoimmune Seizures, a Case Report.

Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated-1 (LGI1) IgG-associated autoimmune encephalitis typically presents with faciobrachial dystonic seizures, hyponatremia, and temporal lobe MRI abnormalities. However, the clinical spectrum of LGI1 IgG-associated AE extends beyond these classical features, with reports of diverse seizure semiologies and atypical presentations challenging traditional diagnostic paradigms. This study reports a male in his late 60s presenting with recurrent episodes of right foot cramping and electric shock-like pain, progressing to generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Initial workup su

Biological age prediction in schizophrenia using brain MRI, gut microbiome and blood data.

The study of biological age prediction using various biological data has been widely explored. However, single biological data may offer lim … interpretability analysis of the optimal model elucidated that the substantial contributions of the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe and the fornix were effective for biological age prediction. Notably, patients with schizophrenia exhibited a pronounced increase in the predicted biological age gap (BAG) when compared to healthy controls. Moreover, the BAG in th …

Behavioral relevance of category selectivity revealed by human ECoG data.

Object recognition is a crucial brain function that involves a complex interplay between various brain regions. However, the behavioral rele … ctions is spatially organized, with the high behaviorally relevant connections being longer for the frontal lobe and shorter for the occipital lobe. These findings underscore the unique roles of different brain areas in object recognition and pave the way for more nuanced explorations of the interplay between brain regions in object recognition and other cogni …

Dataset of human-single neuron activity during a Sternberg working memory task.

We present a dataset of 1809 single neurons recorded from the human medial temporal lobe (amygdala and hippocampus) and medial frontal lobe (anterior cingulate cortex, pre-supplementary motor area, ventral medial prefrontal cortex) across 41 sessions from 21 patients that underwent seizure monitoring with depth electrodes. Subjects performed a screening task (907 neurons) to identify images for which highly selective cells were present. Subjects then performed a working memory task (902 neurons), in which they were sequentially presented with 1-3 images for which highly selective cells were pr…

Early prediction of donepezil cognitive response in Alzheimer's disease by brain perfusion single photon emission tomography.

Currently, there is no effective means to evaluate donepezil response. We evaluated brain perfusion change at 4 h after donepezil administration (4 h DNPZ) to predict cognitive responses after 6 months of medication. CERAD neuropsychological assessment battery was used to define cognitive response at 6 months. We compared 4 h DNPZ to baseline single photon emission tomography (SPECT) by statistical parametric mapping to identify perfusion changes in responders (N = 16) and non-responders (N = 7). In responders, there were significant relatively increase in perfusion in left parietal lobe (BA39

Cardiac arrest associated with epileptic seizures: A case report with simultaneous EEG and ECG.

Ictal asystole is a rare, probably underestimated manifestation of epileptic seizures whose pathophysiology is still debated. This report de … rily generalized. The second one was a 42-year-old veteran with penetrating head trauma in the left frontal lobe due to shell injury. During long-term video-EEG monitoring, he had one generalized tonic-clonic seizure accompanied by bradycardia and cardiac asystole. Asystoles could have a role in the incidence of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), mea …

Impact of alcohol-related video sequences on functional MRI in abstinent alcoholics.

The object of this study was the identification of brain areas that were significantly more connected than other regions with a previously identified reference region, the posterior cingulate cortex, during the presentation of visual cues in alcoholics. Alcohol-related and neutral video sequences were presented to 30 alcoholics who had been abstinent for at least 4 days. Participants underwent a psychometric assessment before and after the presentation of the video sequences. Functional MRI data were acquired. Psychophysiological interaction analyses were carried out. Participants reported a s
