Selection of drug resistance-mediating Plasmodium falciparum genetic polymorphisms by seasonal malaria chemoprevention in Burkina Faso.

Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), with regular use of amodiaquine plus sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (AQ/SP) during the transmission season, is now a standard malaria control measure in the Sahel subregion of Africa. Another strategy under study is SMC with dihydroartemisinin plus piperaquine (DP). Plasmodium falciparum single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in P. falciparum crt (pfcrt), pfmdr1, pfdhfr, and pfdhps are associated with decreased response to aminoquinoline and antifolate antimalarials and are selected by use of these drugs. To characterize selection by SMC of key polymorphisms,

Population-specific association between a polymorphic variant in ST18, encoding a pro-apoptotic molecule, and pemphigus vulgaris.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a severe autoimmune blistering disease caused by anti-epithelial antibodies, leading to disruption of cell-cell adhesion. Although the disease is exceedingly rare worldwide, it is known to be relatively prevalent in Jewish populations. The low prevalence of the disease represents a significant obstacle to a genome-wide approach to the mapping of susceptibility genes. We reasoned that the study of a genetically homogeneous cohort characterized by a high prevalence of PV may help exposing associated signals while reducing spurious results due to population sub-structur

Overview of Cytochrome P450 1B1 gene mutations in patients with primary congenital glaucoma.

The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of mutations in the Cytochrome P450 1B1 gene (CYP1B1) in patients with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) among different populations. All identifiable original studies on CYP1B1 gene mutations of patients with PCG were reviewed. Finally, DNA mutations within the CYP1B1 gene were identified in 542 patients with PCG according to 52 scientific articles and 147 distinct mutations were found. The 3987G>A (G61E) missense mutation is a founder mutation in Middle Eastern population, responsible for 45.52% of CYP1B1 mutations. In Gypsies,

Large-scale population-based study shows no association between common polymorphisms of the TGFB1 gene and BMD in women.

UNLABELLED: The TGFB1 gene is a strong functional candidate for regulating genetic susceptibility to osteoporosis. We studied five common polymorphisms of TGFB1 in relation to osteoporosis-related phenotypes in a population-based cohort of 2975 British women, but found no significant association with bone mass, bone loss, bone markers, or fracture. INTRODUCTION: The gene encoding TGFB1 is a strong functional candidate for genetic susceptibility to osteoporosis. Several polymorphisms have been identified in TGFB1, and previous work has suggested that allelic variants of TGFB1 may regulate BMD

Tinea imbricata: autosomal dominant pattern of susceptibility in a polygamous indigenous family of the Nahuatl zone in Mexico.

We report on 9 confirmed cases of tinea imbricata (Tokelau, infection due to Trichophyton concentricum) out of 16 family members. They had a common mother with three different fathers. The genetic analysis of the family suggests an autosomal dominant pattern of susceptibility. Most cases (8/9) were presented as concentric and lamellar forms. One patient also had onychomycosis due to T. concentricum. Only two out of nine cases had a positive response to trichophytin.

Population structure of the pumpkin fruit fly Bactrocera depressa (Tephritidae) in Korea and Japan: Pliocene allopatry or recent invasion?

Natural orifice scarless cosmetic surgeries are becoming a reality with the increasing experience of advanced laparoscopic surgeries and the availability of modern energy sources. Many techniques of minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy through cervical and extra-cervical routes such as chest wall, trans axillary, submental, post-auricular, and trans-luminal approach have been attempted. However, trans-oral trans-vestibular endoscopic thyroidectomy with its excellent cosmetic effect and minimal side effects has become the more popular option among the surgical community. In this case

SCA8 in the Spanish population including one homozygous patient.

Controversial data have been reported about SCA8 since its description in 1999. The most accepted hypothesis is that CTG expansions within the CTA/CTG combined repeat expansion in the SCA8 locus causes SCA8. It is inherited as a dominant trait with reduced penetrance. The present study, reports the first data regarding SCA8 in the Spanish population and the clinical findings in patients carrying expanded alleles, including one homozygous patient. Two hundred and forty-six individuals from the Spanish population, including controls (149) and ataxic patients (97), were studied. DNA was extracted

Deletion patterns in Argentine patients with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.

The identification of mutations in Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD/BMD) patients is important for carrier detection in these families. We present the patterns of deletions of the dystrophin gene in Argentine population. DNA from 75 patients with DMD/BMD was analyzed by multiplex PCR and, in some cases, cDNA/Southern. Deletions were detected in 24 patients (32%) and were mainly clustered in two areas of the dystrophin gene: the 5' end (exons 3-12) and the central part (exons 44-53). 64% of the deletion endpoints lay in the middle region and 34% in the 5' end of the gene. The most fre

Hereditary breast cancer in Northern Ireland.

The aim of this investigation was to document hereditary breast cancer in Northern Ireland. Family history details from over nine hundred women were obtained by postal survey and one hundred and twenty nine home visits were carried out to collect pedigree information. The families documented varied in the number of affected women from three, which was the minimum criteria for inclusion, to a maximum of nine and many families described other features of hereditary disease such as bilateral breast cancer, ovarian and gastrointestinal malignancies.

The genetics of psoriasis.

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Psoriasis is a member of a class of common, HLA-associated conditions in which disease susceptibility appears to be heritable. However, the mode of inheritance of these diseases has been difficult to define in simple mendelian terms. Psoriasis displays one of the strongest HLA associations of this class of diseases. However, only a small fraction of those who carry the implicated HLA susceptibility alleles develop disease, and it has proven difficult to demonstrate that the HLA associations observed are due to formal genetic linkage between the disease and the HLA locus.

Adenoviruses isolated in the Stockholm area during 1987-1992: restriction endonuclease analysis and molecular epidemiology.

Adenoviruses recovered from the northern Stockholm area during 1987-1992 have been subjected to restriction endonuclease analysis. Adenoviruses of all subgenera (A-F) were represented and a considerable degree of serotype variation was seen, e.g. the rarely encountered subgenus A viruses were frequently isolated in the present study. Of 16 subgenus A isolates, Ad31 predominated with 12 strains which were equally distributed into the DNA-variants D2 and D7. Analysis of 38 Ad3 isolates revealed four DNA-variants: D1, D3, D10, and "Sto1". The ten Ad7 isolates belonged all to the DNA-variant D5 of

Association of Duffy blood groups with the sickle cell trait.

Among a small group of Saudi Arabs the Duffy blood group (Fy(a-b-)) was found to be associated with the sickle cell trait more often than could be explained by random gene combination thus supporting the concept that African gene flow brought the sickle cell trait to the Arabian peninsula. Based on recent observations concerning the possible role of Fy(a-b-) as a resistance factor against vivax malaria, it is proposed that the gene combination AS FyFy is likely to be selected in areas where falciparum and vivax infections are endemic and mixed infections occur frequently.

Congenital dislocation of the hip in the American black.

Between 1977 and 1982, 19 cases of congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) were encountered in black infants. Six of these cases were associated with other anomalies (atypical CDH); 13 were typical CDH. The incidence of complete CDH in the white population studied is 1.5/1000; in the black population studied it is 0.46/1000. The increased incidence in comparison to previous studies may possibly reflect genetic heterogeneity in the control population relative to the African black.

Genetic Influences on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) encompasses the range of deleterious outcomes of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in the affected offspring, including developmental delay, intellectual disability, attention deficits, and conduct disorders. Several factors contribute to the risk for and severity of FASD, including the timing, dose, and duration of PAE and maternal factors such as age and nutrition. Although poorly understood, genetic factors also contribute to the expression of FASD, with studies in both humans and animal models revealing genetic influences on susceptibility. In this arti

TGF-β reduces DNA ds-break repair mechanisms to heighten genetic diversity and adaptability of CD44+/CD24- cancer cells.

Many lines of evidence have indicated that both genetic and non-genetic determinants can contribute to intra-tumor heterogeneity and influence cancer outcomes. Among the best described sub-population of cancer cells generated by non-genetic mechanisms are cells characterized by a CD44+/CD24- cell surface marker profile. Here, we report that human CD44+/CD24- cancer cells are genetically highly unstable because of intrinsic defects in their DNA-repair capabilities. In fact, in CD44+/CD24- cells, constitutive activation of the TGF-beta axis was both necessary and sufficient to reduce the express

A Comprehensive Study of Genic Variation in Natural Populations of Drosophila melanogaster. II. Estimates of Heterozygosity and Patterns of Geographic Differentiation.

A study of genic variation in natural population of D. melanogaster was undertaken (1) to obtain a better estimate of heterozygosity by sampling a relatively large number of gene loci and (2) to identify different groups of polymorphic loci whose variation patterns might suggest different kinds of selection forces. A total of 117 gene loci (coding for 79 enzymes and 38 abundant proteins) were studied in 15 geographically distant populations originating from different continents. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) of the 117 gene loci studied, 61 are polymorphic and 56 are uniformly

Neurodegenerative Biomarkers in Populations with Intellectual Disabilities: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Capacities.

Populations with intellectual disabilities, especially individuals with genetic syndromes such as Down syndrome, are at very high risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. This article aims to systematically review the capacities and limitations of biomarkers in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases in these vulnerable populations. A narrative review was conducted using a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies published between 2000 and 2025 on biomarkers in intellectual disability and neurodegenerative diseases. Eastern Colombian Páramo Liodessus Guignot, 1939 diving beetles are genetically structured, but show signs of hybridization, with description of new species and subspecies (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae).

We studied Liodessus diving beetles from six eastern Colombian Páramo areas, as well as from the Altiplano. We discovered a highly characteristic new species, based on male genital morphology, Liodessussantarositasp. nov., in the Páramo de Guantiva-Rusia. Specimens from the Altiplano around Bogotá, and the Páramos of Almorzadero, Chingaza, Matarredonda, Rabanal y Rio Bogotá and Sumapaz form one clade of genetically similar populations based on mitochondrial Cox1 sequence data. The individuals of this clade are sub-structured according to their geographic distribution. The populations differ fr
