Until recently mammalian hosts of Leishmania (Viannia) naiffi Lainson & Shaw, 1989 have been limited to armadillos, Dasypus novemcinctus, in Amazonian Brazil. Past evidence for human cutaneous leishmaniasis due to this parasite is reviewed, and a recent infection in man reported, with identification of the parasite by isoenzyme profiles and a specific monoclonal antibody. The role of some phlebotomine sandfly species as vectors is discussed.

F. hepatica infection of rats caused a prolonged elevation of serum total IgE reflecting the continued presence of live worms in the host. Infection with 40 metacercariae stimulated higher total IgE levels than infection with 20 metacercariae. The parasite specific IgE response was biphasic, the first peak coinciding with the migratory phase in the liver parenchyma and the second with the establishment of flukes in the bile ducts.

This report summarizes the available information on the immunology of filariasis, and discusses immunodiagnosis and the immunological factors influencing the host-parasite relationship in lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. Several areas that require further research are identified, particularly concerning the development of new serological techniques, and the fractionation of specific antigens. The problems associated with vaccine development are considered and the importance of finding better animal models for research is stressed.

Bacteriophage PBS2 replication is unaffected by rifampicin and other rifamycin derivatives, which are potent inhibitors of Bacillus subtilis RNA synthesis. Extracts of gently-lysed infected cells contain a DNA-dependent RNA polymerase activity which is specific for uracil-containing PBS2 DNA. The PBS2-induced RNA polymerase is insensitive to rifamycin derivatives which inhibit the host's RNA polymerase.

Several outbreaks of goat-pox were observed from 1985 to 1989 in different villages of the N'Djamena area. The virus strain circulating in this region seemed to be host-specific for goats since sheep kept in contact with goats did not suffer from the disease. Nevertheless, it has to be studied further on whether the virus isolated from sick goats could be pathogenic for sheep.

A unique case of hyperinfection with Strongyloides stercoralis in an apparently immunosuppressed host is reported. The organism in various stages of maturation was initially detected by routine sputum cytology. Papanicolaou-stained smears from scrapings of jejunal and colonic mucosa provided specific confirmation of the parasite. Postmortem examination also showed massive tissue and vascular invasion in the intestine with cerebral and pulmonary dissemination.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is an important opportunistic pathogen and a potential reservoir of antimicrobial resistance determinants, yet comparatively little is known about isolates originating from both humans and companion animals. This study characterized 320 S. epidermidis isolates obtained from humans, cats, and dogs within a One Health framework using phenotypic, molecular, proteomic, and genomic approaches. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed high frequencies of resistance to oxacillin (67.19%), erythromycin (66.56%), tetracycline (55.63%), and clindamycin (53.75%) by disk di

BACKGROUND: HIV infection can affect SARS-CoV-2 infection dynamics through prolonged viral replication and altered immune responses, but population-level genomic evidence from HIV-endemic settings is limited. Botswana, a country with high HIV prevalence and an established genomic surveillance infrastructure, provides an important setting to examine how host immune variation influences viral evolution during the Omicron period.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based genomic epidemiology study in the Greater Gaborone District between June 2022 and November 2024. Among 404 SARS-CoV-2 positive

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease affecting more than 240 million people worldwide, is characterized by chronic inflammation and tissue fibrosis primarily induced by parasite egg deposition. Bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4), an epigenetic and transcriptional regulator, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target due to its dual role in modulating Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum) reproductive development and organ fibrosis. Despite these advances, the specific involvement of BRD4 in the host immune response during S. japonicum infection still remains completely uncle

Toxoplasma gondii, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis widespread in animals and humans, is an intracellular apicomplexan protozoan parasite infecting a variety of host cells. Gene editing using CRISPR-Cas9 has become a standard tool to investigate the molecular genetics of this interaction. With respect to gene knock-out (KO) studies, the general paradigm implies that the gene of interest is expressed in the wildtype and that only the gene of interest is affected by the knock-out. Consequently, the observed phenotype depends on the presence or absence of genes of interest. To challenge this

Ascaridia galli (A. galli), a parasitic roundworm that infects chickens poses an economic burden in poultry farming, as it causes ascaridiosis-a disease leading to reduced growth, lower egg production, and immunosuppression. Recently, interest has grown in the parasite's extracellular vesicles (EVs), as they modulate host immune responses and play a key role in host-pathogen interactions. This study aimed to optimize in vitro EV-production from A. galli and assess their uptake by chicken immune cells important for EV mediated host-pathogen communication. Adult worms were collected from infecte

UNLABELLED: The obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis (C.t.) is the leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted infections and infectious blindness worldwide. C.t. replicates within a specialized membrane-bound compartment known as the inclusion and employs a type III secretion system (T3SS) to deliver effector proteins into the host cell. These effectors reprogram host cellular processes to create an environment conducive to bacterial replication. Until recently, C.t. was genetically intractable, limiting efforts to identify effector proteins secreted during infection. As

BACKGROUND: The intestinal and skin epithelium play a strong role against bacterial stimuli which leads to inflammation and oxidative stress when overwhelmed. Polyphenols from fruit-rich diets and by-products show promise against bacterial deleterious effects; however, their antibacterial and health-promoting effects remain understudied.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the impact of polyphenolic extracts of grape (GrPE), persimmon (PePE) and pomegranate (PoPE) by-products on bacterial pathogen-host interactions, focusing beyond growth inhibition to explore their effects on bacterial adhes

Metagenomic sequencing is a valuable tool for non-specifically detecting various microorganisms in samples, offering unique advantages for detecting emerging pathogens, fastidious or uncultivable pathogens, and mixed infections. It has recently been applied to clinically detect pathogenic microorganisms in animals; however, the high proportion of host genes, expensive sequencing equipment, and the complexity of sequencing and data analysis methods have limited its clinical utility. In this study, a combination of tissue homogenization and nuclease digestion was employed to remove host genes fr

Cryptosporidium is a zoonotic apicomplexan parasite that infects the gastrointestinal epithelium and other mucosal surfaces in humans. It is an important opportunistic pathogen in AIDS patients and a leading cause of infectious diarrhea and diarrheal-related death in children worldwide. The intestinal epithelial cells provide the first line of defense against Cryptosporidium infection and play a central role in activating and regulating the host's antiparasitic response. Increasing evidence suggests that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) participate in host-pathogen interactions and play a regulat

Bacterial infection of the posterior segment of the eye (endophthalmitis) leads to a robust host response that often results in irreversible damage to the layers of the retina, significant vision loss, and in some patients, enucleation of the globe. While a great deal of effort has gone into understanding the role of bacterial virulence factors in disease initiation and propagation, it is becoming increasingly clear that the host response to infection plays a major role in causing the damage associated with endophthalmitis. Researchers have identified the host receptors which detect infecting

The ability of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) to persist in its human host relies on numerous immune evasion strategies, such as the deregulation of the lipid metabolism leading to the formation of foamy macrophages (FM). Yet, the specific host factors leading to the foamy phenotype of Mtb-infected macrophages remain unknown. Herein, we aimed to address whether host cytokines contribute to FM formation in the context of Mtb infection. Our approach is based on the use of an acellular fraction of tuberculous pleural effusions (TB-PE) as a physiological source of local factors released during M

Biogeographical and ecological barriers strongly affect the course of micro-evolutionary processes in free living organisms. Here we assess the impact of a recently emerged barrier on populations of limnic fauna. Genetic diversity and population structure in a host-parasite system (Wenyonia virilis tapeworm, Synodontis schall catfish) are analyzed in the recently divided Turkana and Nile basins. The two basins, were repeatedly connected during the Holocene wet/dry climatic oscillations, following late Pleistocene dessication of the Turkana basin. Borrelia burgdorferi is the etiological agent of Lyme disease, a multisystemic, multistage, inflammatory infection resulting in patients experiencing cardiac, neurological, and arthritic complications when not treated with antibiotics shortly after exposure. The spirochetal bacterium transmits through the Ixodes vector colonizing the dermis of a mammalian host prior to hematogenous dissemination and invasion of distal tissues all the while combating the immune response as it traverses through its pathogenic lifecycle. The innate immune response controls the borrelial burden in the dermis, but
