Vestibular time constant and individual susceptibility to motion sickness in real-world driving.

Motion sickness is an important challenge for the acceptance of autonomous vehicles. Although the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ) is widely used, it relies on retrospective self-report and does not directly capture vestibular characteristics. This study examined the association between the vestibular time constant (VTC), which reflects the velocity storage mechanism, and motion sickness severity during on-road driving. VTC was measured in 24 female adults; 21 completed four 30-min acceleration sessions, and all 24 completed nine 30-min deceleration sessions involving regene

Leveraging neural drive to assess hand motor function in individuals with chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of disability, with up to 80% of survivors experiencing motor impairments. These impairments are attributed to various factors, including reduced neural drive and altered motor unit firing patterns. Rehabilitation aims to restore motor function by enhancing motor unit recruitment and synchronization. High-density electromyography (HD-EMG) is a valuable tool for evaluating these changes in motor unit activity. METHODS: We tested a wearable HD-EMG forearm sleeve to investigate the relationship between motor function and motor unit properties including firin

Deep-Neural-Network-Aided Genetic Association Testing in Samples with Related Individuals.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully identified thousands of genetic loci associated with complex traits and diseases, providing critical insights into genetic architecture, biological pathways, and disease mechanisms. With the advance of machine learning, the analytical scope of GWAS can be substantially expanded by enabling joint modeling, nonlinear effects, and integrative analysis. However, deep learning approaches remain underutilized in augmenting traditional GWAS frameworks, particularly in the presence of cryptic relatedness among sampled individuals. In this paper,

Oral bisphosphonates and risk of incident osteoarthritis in individuals with osteoporosis: a target trial emulation.

OBJECTIVES: Owing to the underrepresentation of early-stage disease in randomised trials and inconsistent clinical evidence, using oral bisphosphonates to prevent incident osteoarthritis in adults with osteoporosis lacks consensus. We aimed to analyse the causal relationship between oral bisphosphonates and osteoarthritis. METHODS: We performed a sequential nested target trial emulation with propensity score matching using longitudinal health insurance claims data from Japan collected between 2015 and 2024. Eligible individuals were aged ≥50 years with osteoporosis who had been receiving vita

Comparison of Radiographic and Ultrasound Imaging Techniques for Assessing the Scapholunate Interval in Healthy Individuals.

Background/Objectives: Ultrasound (US) is a valuable tool in hand surgery because of its portability, low cost, and ability to provide noninvasive, real-time evaluation of soft tissue structures. However, it has not been widely assessed for measuring the scapholunate (SL) interval using dynamic stress views. This study aimed to determine whether ultrasound provides comparable measurements to radiography when evaluating the SL interval in healthy subjects. Methods: We analyzed 29 wrists from 29 individuals. Each wrist underwent dynamic stress maneuvers while the SL interval was measured with bo

A review of the literature: Tuberculosis among HTLV-1-infected individuals in Latin America.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that predominantly targets CD4+ T lymphocytes and is transmitted via breastfeeding, sexual contact, and blood transfusions. Endemic regions of HTLV-1 infection often overlap with those of tuberculosis (TB). The mechanisms linking HTLV-1 to increased TB susceptibility remain unclear; it is hypothesized that the virus impairs T-cell function, which is crucial for immune defense against Mycobacterium TB, thereby influencing the clinical progression of TB. We conducted a literature review using the Medline, OVID, and Scielo databases,

Effects of combined cerebellar tACS-iTBS in individuals with ataxia (EtABeta): a crossover investigation.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar ataxia (CA) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive impairments in coordination, balance, and gait disturbances. Conventional rehabilitation therapies offer only limited benefits, driving interest toward exploring alternative non-invasive interventions. Among these, non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, such as cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) have emerged as promising approaches. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a combined cerebellar tACS-iTBS proto

A public dataset of treadmill walking kinematics and kinetics at steady speeds in healthy individuals.

Human motion analysis is widely used in clinical practice to characterise motor function, gait impairments, and fall risk. However, available gait datasets are predominantly acquired at self-selected walking speeds and rarely include standardised slower speeds, despite their relevance for clinical populations. This article describes a publicly available dataset of three-dimensional gait kinematics and kinetics collected in healthy adults under controlled treadmill conditions. Forty-five participants, including young and older adults, performed walking trials at six predefined speeds ranging fr

Individual differences in speech monitoring: Functional and structural correlates of delayed auditory feedback.

Sensory feedback is essential for the fine-tuning of motor actions, and speech production is no exception. It depends on continuous self-monitoring to ensure that produced sounds match intended targets. Delaying auditory feedback (DAF) disrupts this alignment and impairs fluency, providing a powerful tool to investigate sensorimotor control. We combined functional and diffusion-weighted MRI in 31 participants performing a word-production task under delayed (DAF) and immediate (no-DAF) auditory feedback. While all participants slowed their speech under DAF, the extent of this effect varied acro

Association of Thyroid Function and Hormone Sensitivity With Abdominal Fat in Individuals With Overweight and Obesity.

AIMS: The association between thyroid function and body fat distribution remains controversial, particularly regarding visceral and liver fat depots, which are highly predictive of cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to assess the associations of thyroid hormone levels and indices of thyroid hormone sensitivity with abdominal fat depots in adults with overweight and obesity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 272 adults (53.3% women) with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 32.9 (5.9) kg/m2. Thyroid function parameters (TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4RI, TSHI, FT3/FT4) and abdominal fat dis

Mediolateral and anteroposterior balance control during Sit-to-Stand in individuals with transfemoral amputation.

Lower limb amputation alters postural control by eliminating anatomical structures involved in weight transfer and somatosensory feedback. This study investigated sit-to-stand (STS) biomechanics in transfemoral amputees (TFAs), focusing on directional and phase-specific balance-control alterations compared with able-bodied individuals. Eleven unilateral TFAs and six able-bodied controls were recruited. Data from seven TFAs and six controls were included in the primary fixed-foot balance analysis after exclusion of four TFA participants who exhibited repeated foot-relocation behaviours during S
